24.01.2022 Building the Leisure Centre at Endeavour Hills. The Centre opened November 11, 1990, 30 years ago. 23.01.2022 In 1980 gold watches were presented to Shire of Cranbourne outdoor staff to mark their twenty years of service. They were John Charlton, who started February 1957 and in 1980 was working in the bitumen patching gang; Jim Chapman, started in January 1959 and was a power grader operator and John Hapgood, who started in February 1959 and was working as a contract supervisor. 20.01.2022 Cranbourne, February 1964. This shows the town of Cranbourne and the racecourse. The sand pits below the racecourse now form part of the Botanic Gardens. Back in the days when Cranbourne was a country town, when the population was around 1400. Casey Cardinia Libraries photo.
20.01.2022 This is from the Mount Gambier History Group page and is the 1907 wedding of Mary Gardiner to Sam Helpman. Mary was the grand-daughter of Captain Robert Gardiner, one of the earliest European settlers at Berwick, who took up a pastoral lease in 1837 - where Edrington retirement village and Hailebury school are now located. In 1868 he took up the Mount Schank Station in Mount Gambier. Mary and Sam are the parents of Sir Robert Helpmann (1909-1986) the ballet dancer. 18.01.2022 As soon as the 25km lockdown is over I'm heading off to Mr Woodley's bakery. He's a "High class pastry cook" and it's an "Hygenic bread factory". Might even go to Mr Kent's general store while I'm there. These shops were on the corner of the Princes Highway and Webb Street, Narre Warren, north side of the highway. Could also visit Mr Woodley at the Dandenong market, and 'Cleanliness and Civility' is his motto. Photo is from1908 and is from 'Oak Trees and Hedges: a pictorial history of Narre Warren, Narre Warren North and Harkaway' published by the Berwick Pakenham Historical Society in 2002.
16.01.2022 It is Remembrance Day today, the anniversary of the end of the First World War. In Australia from a population of about 4.9 million - 416,809 men enlisted or 38.7 per cent of the male population aged between 18 and 44. Around 332, 000 embarked of whom more than 60,000 were killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner. Many women also served as nurses. With statistics like this it is unlikely that any family in Australia would not have had a family member involved in the War. Many towns erected war memorials to honour those who served - this is the one at Pakenham when it was located in Bourke Park near the Railway Station. It was unveiled in January 1921.
