25.01.2022 SPORT | What is Third Place and what does it mean to 106 Architects? According to Ray Oldenburg, an American urban sociologist, the third place is the social surroundings separate from the two usual social environments of home ("first place") and the workplace ("second place"). The Third Place, for us, is about finding our place as architects to investigate the intersection of sport and community.... We explore what happens when we tip qualities of our home into the design and development of larger-scale projects; like our sports and community facilities. We don't look at our designs as only a building but also as a social hub. LEARN MORE about our designs 106architects.com/sport #106architects #sportarchitects #architecture #thirdplace

23.01.2022 COMMUNITY | Project Spotlight - Dunsandel Community Centre. 106 Architects developed a brief and concept to serve the needs of the Dunsandel community after the loss of their centre from the 2011 Canterbury earthquakes. Winner of the Canterbury Architecture Award - Public Architecture - in 2019, Dunsandel is a purpose-built community centre in the middle of sporting grounds.... To acknowledge the surrounds, flanked by the Southern Alps, we chose to ground the building on a podium, creating a terraced platform that allows for slight spectator elevation to view sports field action. Inside, the external roofline becomes more dynamic a nod to the vibrancy of the activity and community inside. The ceiling is sharper, more cutting, assisting the acoustic performance required of the hall space. The function of this building acts as the meeting point of rural Canterbury where agriculture and agriculture-business meet tourism, lifestyle, sports, culture and community activities. 23.01.2022 MASTERPLAN | Project Spotlight ~ Latrobe City Sports & Entertainment Stadium - Latrobe City Council - Morwell. 106 Architects provided a staging & concept masterplan to accompany Smart Connection Consultancy's feasibility study for the redevelopment. The original layout consisted of 4 grass playing fields.... Engaged early on, extensive consultation with the full range of facility stakeholders including Falcons 2000 Soccer Club Inc., Gippsland Soccer, Football Victoria, Latrobe Valley Soccer League and Referees Association was undertaken. The refurbished facility will become a centre of excellence for football/soccer in Gippsland connecting community grass-roots to the high-performance pathway for promising young athletes. Developed around existing infrastructure and buildings, the new masterplan layout accounts for the upgrading of old natural grass pitches and construction of new artificial turf surfaces.
