22.01.2022 Kimberley Rangers have been busy striving for excellence in fire management! Several trainings have taken place over the past few months as the rangers get... ready for another fire burning season. 22 rangers and ranger coordinators from 11 different ranger groups travelled to Broome for two blocks of advanced fire training at North Regional TAFE. The training is focused on rangers who are ready to step up as Fire Officers within their ranger team and take on coordination and reporting responsibilities. The trainings, which take place over several days, cover topics such as fire legislation, applying for burning permits, cultural aspects of burnings, the creation of burn plans and how fire behaves in the landscape. The rangers also took part in additional workshops on creating maps for burning practice, delivered by Kimberley Land Council staff. The rangers heard from guest speakers from the KLC, Bush Heritage Australia, Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation, Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA and the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions. A delegation from the Bushfire Centre of Excellence came to visit the rangers to engage in conversations about the importance of good fire management in the Kimberley, ask for feedback on their work and to observe the rangers building on professional development. The Bushfire Centre of Excellence is a facility being built near Perth to facilitate training and development to fire managers with a focus on incorporating Traditional Fire Management back into prescribed fire programs Western Australia wide. Reps from the Traditional Fire Program, Wayne Davis and Clifton Blundurry, spoke to the rangers in training to provide an overview of the planned activities of the centre and to receive feedback on challenges Indigenous rangers may face when performing fire management activities. The KLC and Kimberley Ranger Network look forward to facilitating the development of rangers to take on fire management positions with increased coordination and collaboration between traditional owners and government in the near future!
