02.01.2022 REPORTS THE GOVERNMENT HAS CANCELLED THE OLYMPICS Japan’s government has privately concluded the Tokyo Olympics will have to be cancelled because of the coronavirus, The Times reported on Friday, citing an unnamed senior member of the ruling coalition. The government’s focus is now on securing the games for Tokyo in the next available year, 2032, the newspaper said. The Australian Olympic Committee says Tokyo Olympics will still go ahead in July and that Japanese Prime Minister Suga and IOC President Bach have this week strongly reaffirmed their commitment to this. "The AOC is continuing its planning to ensuring the Australian Olympic Team arrives in Tokyo, competes and returns home safe and COVID-free" an AOC spokesperson said.
02.01.2022 BARTY SET TO KICK OFF TENNIS YEAR IN ADELAIDE Ash Barty is set to kick off her year by playing at the Adelaide exhibition match ‘Day at the Drive’ on January 29. The world number 1 will be in good company in Adelaide, joining other big names such as Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, Dominic Theim and Novak Djokovic. Barty will then make her way down to Melbourne to play in a WTA 500 event at Melbourne Park on January 31. Barty has not played competitive Tennis since the Qatar Open in February last year, opting to miss the majority of the year due to coronavirus concerns.
01.01.2022 NOVAK DJOKOVIC TWEETS LETTER TO AUSSIE PUBLIC Novak Djokovic has cleared up the air about his ‘list of demands’ that he released regarding the quarantine for tennis players. 72 players are currently in hard lockdown and are barred from leaving their rooms, and Djokovic had made several suggestions to Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley to improve their quarantine. Djokovic denies his list was a series of demands and said it was was a brainstorm about potential im...provements that could be made to the quarantine of players in Melbourne that were in full lockdown.
