25.01.2022 The Doorstep Documentary X Melaleuca Aged Care. The McLardy Sisters (Heather Hamilton and May Webster) with Saskia // "We’re lucky we still have each other to spend time with, we can still visit each other’s rooms and have ice-cream together. We’ve had family visits through the fence on nice days. We have missed seeing our families as much as we normally would but we have been lucky to have lots of phone calls. There are lots of staff and residents to keep us company and we are looking forward for the footy to be back soon."

23.01.2022 The Doorstep Documentary X Melaleuca Aged Care. Barry Toovey // Barry hasn’t been affected too much by the virus. He has continued to go out on his scooter and shop locally. He has missed seeing his friends for a coffee and at the club. Jan Hainsworth //... I’ve actually been affected very little. I already live in a protected environment and I’m not worried about picking it up here. The restrictions bring back times of when I wasn’t supposed to be smoking, but I did anyway. I am thankful for the care and support here. The staff have been Excellent, but they are always Excellent. I am thankful for my family who I have kept in touch with on the phone. John Palmer // At first I missed my activities and outings. After a short time I settled into the inhouse activities. I have found the staff very encouraging for us to participate in their games and other activities. The current situation brings back memories of when I was a school boy and all the schools were closed we had a POLIO epidemic. Pat Mason // Pat has missed visits from her daughter Sue. She enjoys buying lollies for the staff and having coffee when she is out and about. Some of us may have lost a few kilos during COVID-19.

22.01.2022 The Gajewski's // Reiny, Martha, Zac and Izzy "This time has been very serearal, it’s felt like a badly written Hollywood movie. Reiny is working from home but had to agree to have his pay cut to still have a job. Zac was just starting out as an apprentice chief at The Westernport which unfortunately has had to close during this time. Izzy is loving being at home and having us around all the time. And I’ve resorted to trying new recipes to try and keep my sanity. But even with all the challenges this has bought into our lives we are extremely grateful that we are safe, healthy and look forward to being able to hug our friends and family."

22.01.2022 The Doorstep Documentary X Melaleuca Aged Care. Jim McFee with Geraldine and Paul // "I’ve missed going home as much. There have been less visitors but the staff are very good and there is always someone to have a chat and a laugh with like Geraldine and Paul."

21.01.2022 The Mannix Family // "Although some aspects of isolation have been challenging, the extra time together at home has been a positive experience. We are grateful to still have our jobs and have juggled the kids‘ remote learning in amongst our days at work. Although we have missed our extended family, we have enjoyed our time at home in the garden, on the trampoline and cooking together. Our dogs have absolutely loved the extra attention!"

20.01.2022 Kyla, Zev & Stacey // Many years sharing a house, but not often home at the same time, isolation has provided lots of creative time together but also had it's challenges. It's been the inspiration our modern family needed to move in new directions.

20.01.2022 The Doorstep Documentary X Melaleuca Aged Care. Heather Richards // "I miss not getting out for walks and I miss visits from family members. I’ve had some visits from my daughter Grace on the grounds while we social distance. I have enjoyed some special TV programs and the kiosk has been a help with shopping. I’ve hade more time for Bible and special prayer reading and have written up some special hymns. With restrictions lifted I’ve had some nice drives to Rhyll, Ventno...r and Nobbies which has been a nice change. I’ve played some board games done some knitting and I am thankful for the good Melaleuca Community home." Ken White // "I’ve missed seeing my Grandson, Granddaughter in law and my three Great Granddaughters aged 6, 4 and 2 years old. I’ve also missed my daughter from Adelaide. This situation has brought back memories of when I was about 8 years old. I often played in the Terrace lined streets with my friends and I remember an older blonde-haired girl who was very nice. One day she was not out to play and when we asked after her, we found that she had Polio. This meant life in an iron lung until Sister Kenny changed things and stopped the Iron Lungs. I still think of that little girl." Jack Johnston // "I’ve missed the bus trips. I miss my daughter in New York. I’ve enjoyed keeping contact with my family and watching some TV. "

19.01.2022 The Doorstep Documentary X Melaleuca Aged Care. Eileen Maiden // The pandemic has affected me because I couldn’t have family and friends visit. It has also brought back memories of the Polio in the late 40’s. I couldn’t have asked for better staff, they have bent over backwards to keep us amused. I have been thankful for all the phone calls from family and friends. Betty Hopley //... Betty hasn’t changed her routine much at all. She continues to enjoy walking, having a chat with staff and especially phone calls from her son Neil. Shirley Courtis // It’s been hard not seeing much of my family, but we’ve had visits over the fence and phone calls. The staff have been great and always happy to help but things have been much quieter. I am thankful that we are well looked after and still able to communicate with our families.

18.01.2022 The Doorstep Documentary X Melaleuca Aged Care. Joan Burrow with Nina and Robyn // Before COVID-19 Joan was hatching a plan to talk one of the staff members into taking her home to live. Due to the restrictions she has had to put this plan on hold. Joan has missed seeing her daughters Susan and Linda during this time and she is looking forward to seeing Dr Coleman again. Joan had a fabulous time participating in the Doorstep Documentary. Well after Claire left Joan had all the staff posing for photos with her at the front door for additional photos.

15.01.2022 The Doorstep Documentary X Melaleuca Aged Care. Joan Rodwell // Joan tells us that COVID-19 has only affected her a little bit, but we know she has missed her family terribly. Joan says that she can’t do anything about it, so she is just going along with it. Video calls with her family has brought tears of joy and she has enjoyed her family coming to visit over the last week. Joan joyously tells us she is ‘HAPPY TO BE ALIVE’ Ottie Hopman //... COVID-19 has not really affected me. I never went out too much beforehand anyway. The staff have been careful, respectful and helpful and I am thankful I am being so well looked after with somewhere clean and warm to live. John Cantle // John supposes COVID-19 has woken him up and he is thankful for all the staff at Melaleuca.

11.01.2022 The Doorstep Documentary X Melaleuca Aged Care. Stan & Bev Dipple // Celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary during COVID-19. Stan // "It’s a bit inconvenient for shopping and sport has been shut down. I would have liked to have family over but our daughter was able to visit through the fence and the implementation of video calls has been good. The staff have worked as normal at a general high standard looking after us well."... Bev // "It’s been hard and lonely not being able to see the family. The video calls have been nice, not the same as real family but better than nothing. The staff have been good. I’m very appreciative of the care I’m getting."

09.01.2022 The Doorstep Documentary X Melaleuca Aged Care. Alice Mackiewics // "COVID-19 hasn’t affected me too much, I am still able to communicate with my daughter, but it does remind me of war time. There is a different feel to the world now. The staff at Melaleuca have been wonderful. So happy to help and lots of patience. Nothing is too much trouble. I am 95 years old and I am thankful that I am at Melaleuca. I am so happy and thankful for the wonderful staff and I am so ha...ppy to be in a place like this to see out my final days." Dianne Stewart // "I miss coffee trips, Morning Melodies at the RSL and swimming. Not seeing my children and grandchildren has been the thing I miss the most, but I am grateful that the government cracked down and asked everyone to isolate. It means we might be able to do stuff again soon." Leeston Hopkins // "I haven’t been affected at all by COVID-19. My son organised the paper to be delivered each day and I have been talking to him on the phone. My daughter has been video calling, and writing letters and I haven’t stopped going out for long walks. The staff at Melaleuca have been TERRIFIC as usual."

01.01.2022 The Doorstep Documentary X Melaleuca Aged Care. Carol Glen // Having restrictions has stopped as many visitors which I miss but the staff have been good. Margaret Robinson //... I’ve been missing the little ones and visitors, but I know it’s for the best. The staff have been really ood which has helped with all the changes Olive Hammond // I feel safe. I have missed my family but I have been able to talk to them on the phone and through the gate. The staff are very kind to me.

01.01.2022 HELLO, I’M CLAIRE. // I’m the photographer behind 'The Doorstep Documentary.' Over 200 doorsteps documented, over 200 stories told. I’d like to thank you all. For allowing me, a stranger to most of you, to photograph you throughout the craziness of COVID-19. Without realizing, you’ve all providied an immeasurable amount of comfort to the community by proving that we were always all in this together. ... Fortunately, our Phillip Island community hasn’t been shaken by the devastating health effects that have been felt all over the world. Instead, for so many of us, this crazy moment in history has allowed us to apprecatiate what we are all so lucky to have. I hope that the emmense kindness, compassion and connection that’s been shown while world was turned upside down will continue to be a part of our new normal. The Doorstep documentary will stop dominating your newsfeeds now, but it’s not over yet! An exhibition and a book are on the way, stay tuned.
