23.01.2022 JASA October Meeting Yesterday was our final JASA meeting at Roseville. Though it was unfortunate that we had to have limited numbers, it was wonderful that we could at least have an audience to hear the fascinating talk that Walter Mason gave, titled, Headaches, Malingering and Mansfield Park. Walter’s talk examined the 19th century attitudes to pain and the occurrence of headaches in Jane Austen’s novels, with a particular focus on Mansfield Park and Fanny Price’s stand...ing and stooping in a hot sun. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the talk, and there was lively discussion and interesting questions asked at the end. JASA would like to thank Walter for providing this talk at such short notice. Cheryl Hill is currently organising for the talk to be put on our website so do look out for it so that you can enjoy it from the comfort of your home. Susannah Fullerton has worked hard to ensure that JASA has a varied and interesting range of talks for next year and the programme has been finalised. Let’s hope that next year we can resume our normal procedures for meetings and have many more people attending. Look out for Walter’s talk on the website, along with our 2020 programme.

13.01.2022 Hilary Davidson is in Jane Austen’s House, being reunited with a pelisse she made and filming for Austen Wednesdays.

11.01.2022 It took a whole day to film Mr Darcy's marriage proposal to Elizabeth Bennet for the 1995 BBC series of Pride and Prejudice. The Drawing Room in Teigh Old Recto...ry, where this scene was filmed, was so small there wasn't enough room for the cameras and both actors. Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle each had to be filmed separately, and their scenes were later edited together to create the effect of continuous conversation. Some ten years after the mini-series aired, Victoria Owen, the owner of the rectory, decided to open a B&B in her beautiful home. She's never had to worry about customers Around 75 percent of the guests are fans of the mini-series. You can even stay in Elizabeth Bennet's bedroom (a pity the closet does not have shelves anymore). And all guests are free to use the Drawing Room, where Mr Darcy made his ill-advised proposal and which still features the wallpaper from the series. .
