14.01.2022 CENTENARY CHARGE: The Battle of Beersheba was one of the last great charges of World War One, integral to the Allies' eventual win. One hundred years on, a Rockhampton family was among riders reliving the legend of the Australian Light Horse, in outback Queensland.
14.01.2022 The trek and the charge... In Israel, re-enactors are about to commemorate the charge of the Light Horse to take the town of Be'er Sheva (Beersheba) in Palestin...e, 1917. Before they could take the town, the mounted troops had to traverse huge tracts of inhospitable land without water. To fail at taking the town - and its wells - would be disastrous. Tomorrow will be more from Israel as the commemorations continue. #MILHISTRIVIA: Did you know that eucalyptus trees were introduced to Israel from Australia to drain the swamps and reduce the instance of malaria? They have created a great honey industry because of the gum blossoms at the same time! #yourADF #beersheba #goodsoldiering

13.01.2022 BATTLE OF BEERSHEBA COMMEMORATIONS BEGIN IN TABULAM This year marks the centenary of the WWI Battle of Beersheba, led by General Sir Harry Chauvel. The annivers...ary is not until October, but the community of #Tabulam began its commemorations on the weekend. Australian Lighthorse Association director Barry Rodgers paid tribute to Chauvel at the ceremony. "Harry Chauvel, of course, is very important to the Lighthorse, he was our commander in that famous charge of Beersheba and Tabulam is where he was born and bred... this is Chauvel territory," Mr Rodgers said. Mr Rodgers said Tabulam was also a fitting place to commemorate the Battle of #Beersheba because of its strong Aboriginal community. About 200 Australians will tour the Middle East in October to mark the battle, including 12 Indigenous representatives to pay tribute to their ancestors' role in the war. Wangkangurru man Raymond Finn will be leading the Indigenous contingent. "Our history has been hidden in the past, so it makes me proud to tell that story to the younger generation that this nation is changing," he said. "Ive never been out of the country but Im looking forward to it, its a big historical thing, and Im proud to be at the forefront of it." And it wasnt just on the battlefront where the Indigenous community contributed. #Bundjalung man Eric Walker, known as Peter, is the great grandson of Harry Mundine who was the Chauvel familys head stockman. Mr Mundine is said to have taught the Chauvels their horsemanship skills. An Australian-based ride will also take place in October from Tabulam to Copmanhurst. **Poem in video by Dennis Scanlon**

11.01.2022 In the lead up to the attack at Beersheba, new troops, supplies and weapons were brought forward. One of the key new weapons were aircraft. From the "Australian... Light Horse" book, Chapter 7: "The new British planes got good results. On 8 October Maurie Pearce observed a German Albatros Scout landing in Allied lines due to a holed petrol tank. The plane was captured intact along with the pilot, Lieutenant Gustav Dittmar. Dittmar was unfortunate as he was due home leave in a few days after three years in the Middle East." Photo shows Ditmar's captured Albatros Scout. Edwin Mulford collection. Another photo of the aircraft from the Ralph Kellett collection is used in the book. See more
