22.01.2022 Interesting what external cues work for what people. No matter what I couldn't find an extent cue that worked to minimise knee valgus. Tried something different and he was able to organise his movement in such a way that the right knee did exactly what I was wanting ... #coaching #cueing #strengthandconditioning #physiotherapy



21.01.2022 My sports science, S&C, rehab professionals, sport coaches and athletes out there..... Seemingly controversial post to come. Bench press and variations in contact sports particularly are over-rated!!!!... I know there is a lot of decent -> good quality research out there describing the benefits of bench press strength in contact sports; from performance parameters like being correlated to being chosen in NRL Grand final teams, to physiological things like correlating with pec muscle hypertrophy. However I went down a rabbit whole and can't find a decent reason why bench press started being so heavily researched in these sports as opposed to other pressing / upper body pushing variations... So please leave comments below as an argument to see if I need to change my position???? !!!Only unique positive I can think is that there's likely no other lift that can have as high of an external load, therefore best prepare for possible absorbing high anterior posterior shearing forces on the muscle and glenohumeral joint and being able to create a high force in this same direction for displacing an opponent!!! !!!?Negatives, not very specific to many of the movements in many contact sports, (usually a fend movement occurs in multiple planes) Pinned scapulae, not a normal movement of the scapulothoracic joint with upper limb movement (think minor shoulder joint irritation issues often seen with increasing bench training volumes) Generally requires equal training of posterior shoulder girdle muscles due to the anterior isolation of the bench press movement (time cost) Why not substitute with the following as a main lift for a mesocycle or two Push up incline / decline variations, weighted / banded / explosive push ups, overhead / push press, jammers. I started this 3 years ago and have only lost about 7% max bench press strength on testing and haven't had a shoulder complaint related to training in that time from memory.... So please someone let me know if you think I'm missing the mark... 19.01.2022 Let's see if my health and fitness related friends / colleges on here have something they want to share a little intillectual humility with.... This was a few years ago now and good to look back and see the changes in my practice and where I have come from, and what dogma I probably bought into which is common for young professionals in any career. I once "knew this information to be true" enough that I put it out on the gram to "help" people... It still sounds "scientificy" and "technical" I use enough big words to even sound smart But there has been even prior to this and had since been enough research to show I was likely being far too simplified and restrictive in my process. I would amend this now to say, "soccer players should train a squat pattern, that they most enjoy and can train the most consistently; even multiple different types of squats if able, as well as a variety of other hip, knee and groin strengthening tasks, in any manner that they can progress over time" None of us in this industry ever got it write and anyone selling "that one weird trick, or that one exercise, or that one program" probably has something to gain from it. Continue to look back and reflect on your experiences and when faced with good evidence, slowly adjust your practice to be a better coach / clinician. Be interesting to see what others once believed and put out that they now don't. Wow explaining things in a minute is rough. 03.01.2022 This year has been massive for me. And before the birth of my daughter 6 weeks early this was going to be one of the biggest bits of news for my year....
