24.01.2022 Summer’s here, and with extreme temperatures and conditions already occurring across Australia, it looks set to be a challenging one for people and wildlife alike. Luckily there are plenty of ways you can help take care of our native animals and their habitats in the heat. Read our blog below for a few ideas!

18.01.2022 We wanted to give everyone a quick reminder to keep your beloved pets cool in the summer heat! Many places across Australia are experiencing hot weather this week, so don’t forget to give your companion animals plenty of cool, fresh water to keep them hydrated and provide plenty of shade (or even some swims like Bobby here) so they don’t overheat under the sun Please remember not to leave your furry friends alone in parked cars either.

17.01.2022 A recent FOI exposes an irresponsible political decision to open a NSW marine park to fishing without proper scientific and public consultation, eroding trust in the government's management of the marine estate... This is the scenario threatening habitat in Bateman's Marine Park for critically endangered grey nurse sharks. Act now to tell the ministers responsible that the grey nurse needs protection, and proper consultation is essential https://bit.ly/2KDm18N

17.01.2022 This #GivingTuesday, Humane Society International wants to give our wildlife the disaster response they deserve. Together we can ensure the survival of countless more animals next time disaster strikes. Give now so that we can be ready to act when our wildlife needs our urgent care.

16.01.2022 We would not usually do a post like this but we have made an exception for one of our special supporters, who regularly fosters dogs and finds them their forever homes. She contacted us today as she has a couple of big, beautiful dogs that urgently need to be loved but she is struggling to place! Tucker (the dark brown) is a six year old large mixed breed with all vet work done and is quickly learning how to be on a lead. He loves other dogs once he gets to know them. And Barnie (pictured here with his teddy!) is a one year old wolfhound X that just loves to be around people and other dogs. Both need a little more training but are smart and adorable and just need a new home for Christmas! If you are in NSW and think you can help drop us a direct message together I am sure we can find these terrific dogs the perfect home.

11.01.2022 Today HSI launches our Safeguarding Australia’s Wildlife: Lessons from the 2019-20 ‘Black Summer’ Bushfires report. The report recommends sweeping changes to management and support of the wildlife rescue sector with a major focus on planning and capacity building, coordination, and mental health in order to prevent the extent of devastation caused by the Black Summer bushfires from occurring again in the future. It is clear that governments and emergency services need to be w...orking closely with wildlife groups to improve coordination, build regional capacity with facilities and trained responders, and we need to look after the mental wellbeing of the volunteer responders we rely on. The findings are guiding the development our growing disaster response program, and with no shortage of work to do we’re already acting on the recommendations by training staff in wildlife rescue and investing in emergency field stations, satellite phones and thermal drones to deploy in disasters. 11.01.2022 Today HSI's Alexia Wellbelove gave evidence at the Senate inquiry into the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Amendment (Streamlining Environmental Approvals) Bill 2020. The Bill, if passed, allows the Federal Government to devolve its responsibilities to manage Matters of National Environmental Significance to states and territories, resulting in fractured and inconsistent environmental protection across the country if not done alongside strong legally enforceable national environment standards and an independent regulator to police the system. HSI is staunchly opposed to this and recommended against the amendments during the hearing today.

11.01.2022 There’s no denying that platypus are one of the most unique animals on the planet. It has long been thought that platypus are in decline, but their elusive nature has made it difficult to get a clear picture of just how severe the situation is. Thanks to new research from the UNSW, we now have a much better picture of the national situation. The news isn't good, but we're already acting on the findings.... Read more in today's blog

09.01.2022 Consumers are driving the demand for progress in animal welfare, and as a result, we’re seeing an ever-growing number of retailers and brands who are rejecting mulesed wool We have launched our #BetterWoolGuide listing those with policies against mulesing, or commitments to phase it out. You can check out the guide for yourself here to see if your favourite brands support a mulesing-free world https://bit.ly/3lXU8Gb

08.01.2022 As wombat carers and members of their local Rural Fire Service, Jamie and his wife were doubly impacted when the Green Wattyl Creek fires tore through their community. With over 40 fire-affected wombats in care, they quickly reached capacity with no space for more animals. With Humane Society International’s help, they developed an innovative wombat enclosure to free up space in the shelter modular panels form an enclosure around a natural burrow, allowing wombats to adjust to a life in nature before they are released into the wild. The system is already a great success, with many wombats returning to healthy habitat!

08.01.2022 Platypus are facing serious threats due to habitat destruction, according to a new report. Scientists from the University of New South Wales have found the amount of platypus habitat in Australia has declined by or 22.6% since 1990. The biggest declines were in NSW and Queensland, with 32% and a 27% decreases in platypus habitat. The Australian Conservation Foundation, WWF-Australia, UNSW and Humane Society International Australia have now jointly and urgently nominated the platypus for listing as vulnerable under national environmental laws.

08.01.2022 In case you missed it, last week we sat down for an interview and Q&A with our friend, Kailas Wild, to talk about his new book, The 99th Koala, and our time together on Kangaroo Island during the Black Summer bushfires. You can still watch the full interview below so be sure to check it out!

06.01.2022 Feeling adventurous this #NoMeatMonday? Why not try making your own gnocchi from scratch! It's easier than it looks and will no doubt become a staple in your repertoire once you get the hang of it.
