09.01.2022 Kodak returns P3200 to production! One of the most common questions I get asked in relation to my work is, is it hard working with analogue systems in a digital world. It's releases like this that confirm analogue photography is alive well.

08.01.2022 MEET THE LUDLITES Each week we will feature one of our artists in the Ludlite Collective This week we meet one of the founding members;... Tim Hixson BSC Cinematographer and Photographer who help found The Ludlites and has spent a lifetime as a commercial and art photographer. He has won many awards and has had 10 solo exhibitions here and overseas plus books, commissions, grants, teaching and media appearances. www.timhixsonphotography.com.au Tim will present his series on an Instagram takeover this week. @ludlites LOVERS GUIDE TO HAT HEAD Tim Hixson 2018 Interview with Tim Hixson What inspired you to create the Ludlite Collective? What is the Ludlite Collective? The Ludlites grew out of a series of Plastic camera workshops. Workshop members joined with some other practicing ‘Diana’ and ‘Holga’ photographers for an exhibition at ‘Blender Gallery’ titled ‘Ludlites Love Water The World Through a Plastic Lens V4’ in 2010 There was such great energy and enthusiasm for our shared medium and experimentation was at a peak. When did you first start shooting with a Plastic Lens Film Camera? I bought my first ‘Diana’ plastic camera in 1969 for $1 and used it as part of a photographic degree I was working on at Southern Illinois University in the USA What first inspired your first foray into using a plastic lens film camera? My degree courses were quite technical and academic and the plastic camera was the opposite allowing me more freedom, excitement and unpredictability (but technically just as difficult to master) One of the professors encouraged me to explore further. What do you like most about this style of photography? That the camera has a say in the outcome of your image. It is possible to learn from the cameras accidents and use these to take your photography in new directions. As a photographer, how would you describe your body of work? What's your style? I have tried to take my image making down to its simplest form and use that as a starting point. Mostly documenting and abstracting beach culture and the coast. Where do you draw inspiration? Who are your muses? Harry Callaghan USA 1912- 1999 was my inspiration. His pure and graceful images of simple objects, nudes and landscapes made photography more poetic. He said ‘It’s the subject matter that counts’ Describe to us -- what's a day in the creative life of Tim Hixon look like? Now I am semi retired I surf or swim nearly every day and still use the beach for inspiration. I work on my photography most days. What do you usually do during your downtime, on days not living the artist's life? I like growing things, reading, making things and being with my grandchildren, wife Bronwyn and family. Do you have any on-going projects, or other plans you're keen to work on? Yes I am working on a couple of series at the moment and making Artist Books What has been a significant moment in your photographic life? Publishing ‘Beach’ in 1999 the first hard cover plastic camera photographic book. This coincided with an exhibition at Sandra Byron’s Gallery and legitimized our medium as a valid form of photographic expression. How do you approach using a plastic lens camera compared to a traditional camera? With Plastic cameras there is a mental checklist to be constantly aware of and, at the same time, trying to forget and just feel. Has your relationship with photography changed since using a plastic lens film camera to take photos? Yes the limitations of the lens and camera preclude chasing some ideas (you learn from your failures) however, a whole world of potential exists nonetheless. How easy/hard do you find working with film in a digital age? What are some of the challenges? What I find hard nowadays is having to be more careful with film usage and waiting so long before seeing results. What process did you follow to create some of your Ludlite work? Each show requires a different approach and up to 12 months to complete. Many seemingly good ideas bite the dust and hopefully a couple survive. Over 14 Ludlite exhibitions I have worked through lots of the pre conceived plastic camera techniques. What do you enjoy about being part of the Ludlite Collective? I like the shared achievements and even the shared disappointments. These cameras can humble us all and gift us in the next moment. What surprises me is the amazing diversity we get in every show. Ludlites come up with some incredible ideas and maintain a high technical standard. Our shows are powerful events and we have definitely earned our place in contemporary photography in Sydney and even in the World. Where do you see Plastic Camera Film Photography (Lomography) going? We seem to go through highs and lows and occasional surges in popularity. The main thing is our presence as a viable alternative to digital which, in many ways, signified the end of truth in photography. Film photography is not necessarily true but the limitations it forces you to adhere to are. This spills over to include intention and, hopefully, this is a reminder to digital image makers to remember photography’s lineage.
