23.01.2022 Red foliage can be one the most striking aspects of plants, whether new growth, year round foliage or in the autumn colour. There are more varieties of trees and shrubs that feature red in the leaf these days, and it can be as ornamental as many flowers, red or otherwise. The following photos shows a few that have such red colouration, all can be grown locally and provide good contrast to paler shades, especially white.

23.01.2022 A few additional pictures of garden plants with winter interest, whether in bloom, leaf or plant habit.

23.01.2022 This ornamental conifer belongs to one of the most poisonous genus of plants cultivated, although this doesn't detract from their garden merit. Taxus, or the Yews have long been grown in the northern hemisphere, for hedges, topiary and as churchyard specimens, particularly in graveyards for some reason. Nevertheless they are indispensable shrubs or small trees that are long lived and do as well in deep shade as sun. They aren't cultivated as much in Australia as they can be s...low to establish. The pictured Yew. Taxus x. media ' Hicksii ' is a faster growing hybrid, between the English Yew, Taxus baccata, and Japanese Yew, Taxus cuspidata. It is used extensively in Europe for narrow hedges, but not much here. It has dark green needles and being female, bears a heavy crop of bright red berries in autumn. All parts of the plant are highly toxic to humans and most animals, except for the fleshy red seed covering, called an aril, which ironically is edible:-) See more

20.01.2022 Elegia capensis is an elegant rush like perennial, in the Restio group, native to Southern Africa. It is grown for it's long, 2-3m arching green canes, which make excellent cut lengths for a vase, holding onto the horse tail like foliage even when dry. The flowers are terminal brown spikes, which indicate it's rush like association. In the garden it prefers a moist to boggy spot, and is particularly effective near water, tolerating inundation of water during winter. It can be treated like a bamboo by removal of older canes at ground level that have begun to turn yellow.

20.01.2022 The Arctostaphylos group of trees and shrubs comes from the Heath family, and are very close cousins to Arbutus, the well known Strawberry Trees. Both genera come from drier, maritime and Mediterranean type climates. Arctostaphylos are native to South West USA and Mexico, having an open free form structure, often multi stemmed. They like a mineral rich soil for best annual growth, but are quite adaptable, providing they receive plenty of direct light. Plants in shade tend to ...be very sparse. A. manzanita ' St. Helena ' is a fine Californian form with pretty white urn shaped flowers in winter, lively blue green ovate leaves and striking copper coloured bark which peels in patches in late spring. The bark is enough reason to cultivate any of the tree forms alone. Another good shrub is Arctostaphylos ' White Lanterns ', slightly lower growing and with abundant pure white pitcher shaped blooms in late winter. It has more reddish bark and can spread to 5m across. See more

18.01.2022 Clethra is a small genus of trees and shrubs, deciduous and evergreen. They flower in late summer and early autumn. Clethra alnifolia is a deciduous species from eastern USA, and goes by the common names, Summersweet or Sweet Pepper Bush. It has a slightly suckering, colonising habit. The spicy scented flowers of Clethra alnifolia form in a raceme, being deep rose and white on the cultivar ' Ruby Spice ', and pure white on the lower growing ' Hummingbird '. Both have foliage which turn golden yellow in autumn. Moist or heavy soil is best, and the shrubs can be hard pruned to encourage numerous new basal shoots. Very effective planted near a window of a house to obtain the sweet fragrance.

18.01.2022 Arctostaphylos manzanita ' St. Helena ', detail of the flowers, showing the linkage with the Erica family.

16.01.2022 Deciduous autumn colouring trees and shrubs do particularly well in Tasmania's cool, temperate climate, the period of interest being mid April right through May. Even the smallest of gardens can incorporate plants with vivid autumn tints, from Japanese Maples, Ginkgo's and Birches, to Smoke Trees, Viburnums and Witch Hazels. Larger sized gardens have a wider choice including Beech, Oak, Ash, Hornbeam, Liriodendron and Liquidambar. Deciduous conifers provide a welcome contrast to the bright red, yellow and orange of many broadleaved species by turning to russet, bronze and gold. Even some southern hemisphere flora, such as Southern Beeches and one species of Leatherwood colour gloriously when winter approaches.

15.01.2022 Hydrangea is one of the flagship flowering plants for summer time, and there are many types of colours and bloom shapes within the genus. Lace cap, mophead, panicle and corymb being the most common. Most Hydrangeas like some afternoon sun protection, as both foliage and flowers can singe if too hot. Bigger leaved and sized forms such as Hydrangea aspera and Hydrangea villosa also favour some wind shelter as the leaves are large and can tear easily through the veins. Leafy organic laden soil is best.

15.01.2022 Lovely mid winter fragrant flowering shrubs, Luculia pinceana ' Pink Spice ' and Rhododendron tuba. The former has a delicate spicy scent, and rich pink florets, while the latter has pendulous clusters of narrowly tubular white flowers with pink tubes and more of a carnation fragrance. Both long flowering when established and do very well in a cool to mild position, free from hard frost. Luculia's are often grown as large specimen shrubs for a woodland style garden, and benefit every few years from hard pruning, generally in late spring or summer. Rhododendron tuba, as with all Vireyas, respond well to annual pruning, helping to keep the plants dense and stimulating sufficient young basal growth.

13.01.2022 European Guelder Rose, Viburnum opulus, is best represented by the snowball flowering version, or ' Sterile ', with it's creamy white pom pom heads of infertile flowers in spring. It is one of the most widely used Viburnums in gardens. Of more interest are the fertile forms, which have nice white lace cap flowers and long lasting berries throughout summer and autumn. The fruits are edible but tart, best left until very ripe on the plant. The best known fruiting form is ' Not...cutt's Variety ', with it's glistening bunches of blood red berries, making a good contrast with the green foliage. Lesser known is ' Xanthocarpum ', with attractive amber yellow berries, and lighter green foliage. The two look very effective planted close together, preferably in full sun position. Viburnum opulus can be pruned hard and it will send up a mass of vigorous vertical shoots which will bear fruit in two seasons. See more

10.01.2022 Bold and BLUE..six of the best blue foliaged ornamental conifers for gardens. Blue colouration in conifers, and all woody plants is caused by a protective covering of the leaf or needle, giving it a waxy sheen, essentially a surface bloom that sloughs off in preceding seasons as the subsequent growth protects the older foliage. It usually results from plants growing in harsh environments where Ultra violet radiation is more intense. Hence why many high altitude species of conifers in western USA have vivid blue needles, particularly in the states of Arizona, Nevada and Colorado, in the higher slopes of the Rocky Mountains.

10.01.2022 TOP TEN DWARF EVERGREEN SHRUBS This is a list ( subjective ) of ten of the best small compact evergreen shrubs for ornamental purposes in the garden. Each one looks good year round and favours plenty of light generally. Some are also excellent flowering plants, though most are cultivated for their foliage, stems and habit. There are several alternatives that are of equal merit that didn't make the list. The plants are in alphabetical order and not any order of superiority. 1)...Continue reading

10.01.2022 During March, the sweet musk fragrance of the Lily of the Valley tree fills the air, at a time when bold scented floral displays from trees are few in number. The pictured plant is Clethra arborea ' Flore Plena ', which has double pure white flowers in a pendulous spray. Glossy leaves highlight the blooms well and the tree is vigorous and upright to about 7m. Native to Madeira off North Africa, so it suits a maritime region very well.

08.01.2022 Silvery foliage plants are well adapted to strong winds and coastal conditions, their green leaves coated with a mass of fine hairs, giving them their silver hue. The covering is an adaptation assisting with moisture retention and prevention of leaf dessication. Normally, second year leaves return to a green shade with the silver hairs sloughing away once their protective mat of fine hairs have finished their task. Brachyglottis ' Otari Cloud ' is an easy to cultivate, evergreen shrub belonging to the Daisy family that has the typical yellow star shaped blooms and striking silver ovate leaves with a soft texture. The foliage, dense plant habit and hardiness is more significant than the sunny yellow flower display. The shrub can be pruned hard and grown in a grouping for best effect.

02.01.2022 Winter need not be a dull time in the garden. Even in July and August the choice of interesting flowering and foliage plants is extensive, and can be achieved in even smaller suburban gardens with careful selection. The advantage of winter blooming plants is their generally longer flowering period, due to a lack of pollinating insects during the cooler months.
