24.01.2022 SEVERE WEATHER WARNING FOR WEDNESDAY 2/9/20. A Severe Weather Warning as been issued for the Monaro District for Wednesday 2/9/20, with vigorous and strong warm and dry winds expected as a frontal system moves through the district. We currently have approx. 100 notifications of private landowner burns planned or underway, and with the weather predictions burning off should be ceased until more favourable conditions prevail. Landowners who have recently burnt off are asked to ...ensure their fires are totally out, as it only takes one spark for a fire to escape. Only as recently as this afternoon, a landowner north of Cooma lost control of their fire, resulting in 3 houses being directly threatened and fire crews from RFS Cooma, Bredbo & FRNSW Cooma having to rush to the scene to halt the fire at the houses. This serves as a clear message to all landowners considering burning of, as conditions this afternoon were mild with little to no wind.

Volunteers attended a grass fire today that was caused by an escape from a pile burn. Please take care in windy conditions.

10.01.2022 Fire weather forecast from the Bureau of Meteorology indicates we are in for a period of High Fire danger for the Monaro Alpine fire area. 10.01.2022 The Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC have released their Summer Bushfire Outlook. It shows the Monaro and Snowy Mountain's grasslands are above average risk of fires. This summer will be very different to last one which centred on bush area. This year the danger is grasslands. As grasses and crops dry out, we will see an increasing risk of grass fires. Grass fires start easily and move quickly, and heatwaves will speed the drying of the grasses. Ensure you protect your famil...y and property by keeping grasses low in your Asset Protection Zone close to your home and buildings. Tall grass is a danger. It is safer and easier to keep your grasses low. As grass fires ignite easily, avoid driving or using spark generating equipment on dry grasses. Avoid mowing or slashing during periods of high temperatures or winds, and ensure that you have firefighting equipment immediately available. Some grassland areas of NSW are expecting Severe and potentially Extreme fire danger this weekend. While conditions are expected to be milder in the Snowy Monaro this weekend, now is the time to ensure that your plan is fireproof.
