The ambush signalled the start of the of the larger Battl...e of Muar, which would last eight more days until 22 January. The ambush at Gemas was the first Australian contact with Japanese troops of the Second World War. 06.01.2022 AUSTRALIA DAY ACHIEVEMENT MEDALLION 2019 RSL Tasmania is proud to announce the recipients of its two Australia Day Achievement Medallions which were presented b...y the Acting State President, Mr Geoff Leitch this week. The Australia Day Achievement Medallion is an inspiring way for us to acknowledge the contribution to the nation by organizations, our own volunteers or a member of the community. The Australia Day Achievement Medallion and certificate program is administered by the National Australia Day Council. On Tuesday, 22 January 2019 the first of the Australia Day Achievement Medallions was presented to Mr Damian Bester, a journalist with the Mercury Newspaper. Damian has long been a supporter of veterans, and the RSL. In the 100 days leading to the Centenary of Armistice on 11 November 2018, Damian put together stories of 100 soldiers, one published each day, of Tasmanians who served, died, or were injured in WW1 and it was a magnificent tribute to those soldiers. Damian is member of the New Norfolk community and attends many commemorative events across the South of the State, writing them for The Mercury or Derwent Valley Gazette along with the images. In the 100 Days series, he wrote about how New Norfolk became the place to treat soldiers with PTSD - more notably Millbrook Rise which still exists today as a mental facility. He has also produced WWI supplements for the Newspaper In Education resources which are used under the Department of Education over the centenary years 2014 - 2018. Through Damian’s work, the loss of those who fell in WWI has resonated across the generations with many Tasmanian families responding to the stories over the 100 Days. Damian, outside his work with the Mercury, has also produced several volumes of the history of the Derwent Valley. While it could be said this work is the result of Damian’s employment, he writes with compassion as well as a genuine understanding of our military history. On Thursday, 24 January 2019 our second Medallion was awarded to Mr Brian Watson, a member of our Northern Midlands RSL Sub Branch at Longford. Brian has been instrumental in the organization of ceremonial events throughout the centenary of ANZAC and the Centenary of Armistice commemorations during 2014 to 2018. Mr Watson was responsible for the live broadcast of the New Zealand dawn service to the Longford cenotaph on Anzac Day in 2014 and 2015. He also organized a centenary of Anzac-themed concert at Launceston’s Door of Hope in 2015. After the success of the above events Mr Watson put his efforts towards organizing the centenary of armistice events. A Centenary of Armistice concert and dinner were organized by Mr Watson. Both events were held at the Albert Hall in Launceston. We join with all members of RSL Tasmania in congratulating the very worthy recipients, Damian and Brian on receiving their awards. We acknowledge the Mercury and the Examiner Newspapers for the photographs

05.01.2022 Merry Christmas from the entire team at RSL NSW!

01.01.2022 Today marks the 77th anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin, in which two raids killed at least 243 people with between 300 and 400 wounded. The 19th of February ...1942 marked the beginning of a series of bombings lasting several years with the first day killing almost 200 people. During the war other towns in northern Australia were also the target of Japanese air attacks, with bombs being dropped on Townsville, Katherine, Wyndham, Derby, Broome and Port Hedland. It is certainly worth reflecting on this historic event and remembering those who lost their lives. Legacy Australia were there to support the families of fallen soldiers and have continued to Keep the Promise for 96 years. Royal Australian Navy Australian Army Royal Australian Air Force

01.01.2022 RSL Tasmania State Branch join in congratulating Mr Richard (Dick) Goodwin of our Channel RSL Sub Branch, on receiving the award of Kingborough Citizen of the Y...ear 2019. You have worked long and hard, Dick, and the recognition is greatly deserved. Well done! We share the below information: Kingborough Award Winners 2019 Kingborough Council hosted its annual awards ceremony on Saturday 5 January 2018 at the Civic Centre in Kingston to recognise and celebrate residents who have made an outstanding contribution to the well-being of the Kingborough community. The Mayor of Kingborough, Cr Dean Winter presented the Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Group of the Year and Certificates of Appreciation. He said These awards are Council’s opportunity to recognise not only those who are receiving awards, but to send a message to all volunteers, who, through their own efforts help create the community we are so proud of. Chair of the Kingborough Awards Committee Councillor Paula Wriedt said It was a really difficult decision by the panel this year, because of the large number and high quality of nominations we received. It is heartening to see so many potential worthwhile recipients being recognised in our municipality and I encourage everyone to nominate their local hero next year. The Citizen of the Year was presented to Richard Goodwin, for his outstanding contribution to the Blackmans Bay District Cricket Club, and his dedication to the ongoing welfare and support for returning veterans and their families. Richard is highly respected member of the Kingborough community and supports a number of initiatives, schools, charities, youth organisations and aged care facilities. Richard Goodwin, Citizen of the Year Richard is a co-founder of the Blackmans Bay District Cricket Club in 1972 and, quite literally, has built the Club from the foundations. Over the years, he has been responsible for planning many improvements including upgrades to playing facilities to oval drainage, watering systems and fencing and wicket replacements. The North West Bay Golf Club has also benefited from Richard’s success in applying for grants, which enabled them to improve watering systems and maintain their machinery. Richard has also planted many native trees around the course to help rehabilitate the natural environment. Helping veterans and their families is a particular focus for Richard. He is an extremely valuable member of the Channel RSL Sub Branch (formerly the Kingborough RSL Sub Branch), and he wrote and published the booklet ’80 years of service’ to celebrate their achievements. He is always available to provide advice to Channel ex-service persons and their families, particularly when they are in need, and continues to push for more consideration to be given to returning soldiers. Richard is a highly respected member of the Kingborough community, and has supported and advised schools, community associations, youth organisations, aged care facilities and a number of other charities. During 2018, he was instrumental in establishing The Cluny Portnell Scholarship with the University of Tasmania, which is awarded to an outstanding nursing undergraduate. The support for Richard’s nomination was overwhelming and he is a very worthy recipient of this award.
