24.01.2022 Prayer for Remembrance Day Let us pray for all who suffer as a result of conflict, and ask that God may give us peace: for the service men and women... who have died in the violence of war, each one remembered by and known to God; may God give peace. For those who love them in death as in life, offering the distress of our grief and the sadness of our loss; may God give peace. For all members of the armed forces who are in danger this day, remembering family, friends and all who pray for their safe return; may God give peace. For civilian women, children and men whose lives are disfigured by war or terror, calling to mind in penitence the anger and hatreds of humanity; may God give peace. For peacemakers and peacekeepers, who seek to keep this world secure and free; may God give peace. For all who bear the burden and privilege of leadership, political, military and religious; asking for gifts of wisdom and resolve in the search for reconciliation and peace; may God give peace. O God of truth and justice, we hold before you those whose memory we cherish, and those whose names we will never know. Help us to lift our eyes above the torment of this broken world, and grant us the grace to pray for those who wish us harm. As we honour the past, may we put our faith in your future; for you are the source of life and hope, now and for ever. Amen.

17.01.2022 Apparently, in the Palestine of New Testament times, it was customary for a wedding banquet to take place at night. After an official and rather lengthy betrothal (cf. Mt 1:18), the Bridegroom would come, at a pre-arranged time, to the parental home of the Bride. She would come out, surrounded by crowds of her relatives and friends, who would lead her in procession, with torches and singing and dancing, to her new wedding home. There a feast would be held for all. After that,...Continue reading

15.01.2022 NAIDOC Week 2020 Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.... We are spiritually and culturally connected to this country. This country was criss-crossed by generations of brilliant Nations. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. We built and engineered structures - structures on Earth - predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge. Our adaptation and intimate knowledge of Country enabled us to endure climate change, catastrophic droughts and rising sea levels. Always Was, Always Will Be. acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and our cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. Through ingenious land management systems like fire stick farming we transformed the harshest habitable continent into a land of bounty. NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 or 1606 - with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. Our coastal Nations watched and interacted with at least 36 contacts made by Europeans prior to 1770. Many of them resulting in the charting of the northern, western and southern coastlines of our lands and our waters. For us, this nation’s story began at the dawn of time. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded. Always Was, Always Will Be.

06.01.2022 Absolution at the Catafalque on All Souls Day. Following the Prayer after Communion at the All Souls Day Mass lastnight, the priest with cross and candles moves to the Catafalque placed at the front of the altar. The Catafalque with the empty casket represents the lives of those who have died. The priest then invites the congregation to pray as he sprinkles the casket with holy water ( symbolising the waters of baptism) while the choir chants Libera Me from the Requiem by Faure. Incense is then used to reverence the casket, reminding us that the body is the 'temple of the Holy Spirit.'
