24.01.2022 Here’s some more info on VH-OJA’s final flight, for those that are interested. The link follows to the Australian Aviation magazine story which provides a date for the last flight Sunday 8th March, and a provisional ETA of 0750LST/EDST subject to conditions on the day. http://australianaviation.com.au//qantas-confirms-vh-oja-/ Provided the local winds are within approved margins, the crew will setup for a 5nm Final approach on RWY16 (which avoids a let-down over the escar...pment), and which means OJA will pass over the big roundabout, just to the north of the RWY16 threshold, at about 250’ AGL. I’m not speaking first hand here...this observation courtesy of Google maps. That’s obviously the place to be, but I doubt the local Authorities will allow it. The busy roundabout forms the intersection of the Illawarra and Princes Highways, and I expect it’ll be closed temporarily, once they have an ETA to avoid the embarrassment of a multiple pile up as distracted motorists drive into each other. If conditions on the day don’t give the crew what they want, the flight will be postponed to the weekend of 14/15th march. The flight’s been approved on the basis of zero tailwind for landing or a maximum crosswind of 10kts. The crew will be aiming for a VREF 30 (Speed at Threshold with 30 degrees of flaps selected) of 128kts. About the same as my old C172. There’ll be no option to use the reciprocal RWY (34) as it has a displaced threshold of about 180metres, which effectively reduces the runway length by that value. The runway itself is about 1820m long, and because of the risk of FOD ingestion for the outboard engines, OJA will have only mechanical brakes to stop her with engines selected to idle reverse. Full reverse thrust is available if safety dictates Her tires will have been deflated prior departure SYD to soften her footprint. She’ll have a basic weight of around 181000kgs and will depart SYD weighing about 206000kgs, which will include about 25000kgs fuel. This gives her about 2 hours endurance at low level and if she lands successfully on the first attempt, HARS will probably need to arrange to defuel her once the crowds depart. 25000kgs is the Company imposed minimum fuel uplift on a -438 - anything less and there’s the risk the forward fuel pumps will be sucking vapour during a steep climb. There’s a chance this fuel uplift may be reduced to 20000kgs. Burnoff/Sector fuel/FFD will be about 5000kgs, so she’ll land weighing about 201000kgs. She’s operating under a CASA Dispensation and that’s why there’ll just be the 4 pilots on board no Cabin Crew or pax. Not much point the cockpit paging the FSD for a couple of coffees to be delivered to the Flight deck. I hope to be able to supply Tech Crew names soon. They do intend having at least 1 GoPro camera fitted to the flight deck. I’ll pass on more info if and when it becomes available. Cheers See more

21.01.2022 Just to let you all know John Martin (JJ) and myself Geoff Janson (Janno) are the admins for this page. So each time one of us post on the page we will include our initials or name just so you know who it was. Also we are all busy people and would love to this page take off, haa yep pun, so if there is anyone else who might be interested in helping out let us know, we have the brains sorted with someone from TST and a crewman I guess we better let a pilot on or they might get upset... But don't worry we won't let them make any decision
21.01.2022 Wow, look out. My old SSM and then RSM has joined the page. All of an sudden I felt like I should be cleaning my room and not walking on the grass. Haaa G'day Jim Merrick. Glade you have joined the page. Its good to see a people joining up. I created this Page a we few years ago. And it has rocked away slowly. JJ Martin is also an administrator. I would love to see this Page used as a forum and contact, for next and current 161 members. So please if you have any idea, suggestions you have or topics you want to discuss feel free. Also is there someone else who would be interested in joining the administration side of the page. If we could possibly get a few people from a few areas and even generations of 161 to help us maintain an even level of content. Take care Possums..... Regards Geoff Jansom

17.01.2022 A great front page article on Glen Todhunter flying with RFDS Launceston in the Sydney Morning Herald. Unfortunately the SMH server is playing up...I would normally place link.
12.01.2022 It really is great to see everyone joining the page, some names I haven't heard for a long time. I would like to get people thought on something. We want to make this page as collaborative as we can. So what do you all think of changing the name to include Flight in the title. As this was the original 161. Now my question. Is this. A, do you want that. B, how should we do it,sqn before the flight or flight after the sqn, flight in brackets... You get the picture, and C, what if any ideas might you have on the subject..
