22.01.2022 If conditions are suitable, and it is safe to do so, FFMVic will ignite the Kangaroo Flat - Carcoola Drive planned burn tomorrow (Wednesday 25 November). This fuel reduction burn is approximately 174-hectares in size and 2.8 kilometres south west of Kangaroo Flat in the Bendigo Regional Park. The burn is focussed on reducing the spread and intensity of bushfires near Kangaroo Flat and surrounding areas.... We work closely with the Bureau of Meteorology to assess weather conditions, such as humidity, temperature and wind speed, and will only carry out burns when the conditions are suitable. We understand that smoke from planned burns may cause concern and encourage those who are sensitive to smoke to remain indoors and keep windows closed until the smoke passes. Under the current public health advice, our planned burning program can continue for now. If that advice changes, we will make any adjustments necessary in consultation with Victorian Department of Health & Human Services, Environment Protection Authority Victoria, CFA (Country Fire Authority) and Vic Emergency. Officers seized the illegal firewood, the trailer, a chainsaw and wood splitter, and interviewed the man at the scene. ... Officers also searched the man’s property in Colac, seizing a four-wheel drive and $3,000 in cash. This follows a major investigation by the Conservation Regulator and Parks Victoria into the illegal felling and removal of trees at numerous sites across the Otway Forest Park and the Great Otway National Park. Domestic firewood collection is only allowed in designated firewood collection areas during a firewood collection season. 16.01.2022 Community members are likely to see our crews mowing, slashing and clearing tracks on public land as part of fuel reduction works in the lead up to summer. More than 2,000 hectares (approx 800 locations) of public land in Central and Northern Victoria will be treated by mechanical works, starting at St Arnaud, Cohuna, Kerang, Gunbower, Boort, Rushworth, Corop, Craig Craig, Wedderburn, Inglewood and Bridgewater, with more locations added as conditions become suitable. The timi...ng of this work is important because if it is undertaken too early it will encourage regrowth before summer. Mechanical treatments are an effective way to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires, which assists firefighters with getting fires under control, helps keep communities safe and reduces the impact of bushfires on the environment. Our crews are adhering to appropriate physical distancing and hygiene requirements to ensure we can safely continue operations across the state. Getting ready for the fire season is everyone’s responsibility and we encourage people to start cleaning up around their homes and land too. There is lots of great information about getting your property fire ready on the CFA website https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare.

13.01.2022 It’s been one year since the first ‘code red’ fire danger rating in almost a decade was declared, and dry lightning strikes in North East Victoria and East Gippsland started multiple fires which grew into a devastating bushfire disaster. Today we acknowledge and thank our FFMVic crews and all the emergency services and volunteers who not only fought the fires but also helped affected communities rebuild and move forward after an unprecedented fire season.

11.01.2022 The Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC has released its seasonal outlook for December to February. Average to above average rainfall during spring, combined with an outlook of above average rainfall for much of Victoria, indicates we will experience a less severe bushfire season this summer but an increased risk of grass fire. Here’s what Victoria’s fire agencies say this means for fire risk.

08.01.2022 Ignition of the planned burn at Upwey between Hughes Street and Tremont Hill Track is now underway. Tremont Hill Walking Track in the Dandenong Ranges National Park will be closed for the weekend. This 3.4-hectare burn is a critical part of our program to reduce the bushfire risk in the area. Weather permitting, the burn will be complete by Sunday 22 November. Crews will remain on site throughout the night and in coming days to patrol the burn. Planned burning is one of the... many strategies used by FFMVic as part of an integrated approach to protecting life and property from the risk of bushfire. Our crews are adhering to appropriate physical distancing and hygiene requirements to ensure operations are carried out safely. We understand that smoke from planned burns can cause concern and encourage those who are sensitive to smoke to remain indoors and keep windows closed until the smoke passes. This is a small burn that is not expected to generate large amounts of smoke, but the poor ventilation forecast means smoke is likely to settle rather than be immediately dispersed. 03.01.2022 After the 2019/20 summer fires our Mountain and Alpine ash forests needed some tender loving care. That’s why we carried out one of the largest forest restoration efforts in Victoria to re-seed our alpine ash forests. We’ve released 4.5 tonnes of seeds out over 11,500 hectares to bring these forests back to their former glory. To prepare for similar events in the future we’re now collecting 7.5T of seeds to be ‘banked’ to enable a fast recovery for any future forest restoration efforts. Protecting our forests for years to come.
