15.01.2022 Alopecia Areata At #MEDerm we see many patients suffering different types of hair loss, one of the most common hair loss conditions we see is Alopecia Areata These photos are of @drdesgan 's patient (posted with consent). Click on his profile to see exactly how he got these amazing treatment results for this man ... This condition will affect approximately 2% of the Australian population at some stage of their life Alopecia Areata is an auto-immune disease that causes the body's immune system to attack the hair follicles, resulting in dramatic hair loss. The hair loss can range from several bald patches, to total baldness (Alopecia totalis) and can be localised to the face and scalp or affect the entire body (Alopecia universalis). It can affect women, men or children of any age While Alopecia Areata does not have any systemic symptoms it can have a profound emotional and psychological impact on people living with the condition. It is important to find a provider that will treat you with the care and support you need while treating your condition #alopecia #alopeciaareata #alopeciatotalis #alopeciauniversalis #alopeciatreatment #alopeciasupport #autoimmunedisease #hairloss #beforeanafter #progress #hairlosstreatment #wecanhelp #alopeciaawareness #baldspots #haircare #dermatology #skinexperts #skinspecialist #asianskinexpert #melbournedermatologist #blackburn #croydon

14.01.2022 How does skin colour affect skin conditions and treatments? What is the Fitzpatrick scale? The Fitzpatrick scale is used by dermatologists to classify the skin by it's reaction to light exposure - How would my Fitzpatrick skin phototype be assessed? ... Your Fitzpatrick skin phototype is dependent on the amount of melanin pigment in your skin. We determine this by your base tone (white, brown, or black skin) and the effect of exposure to UV radiation (tanning) on your skin. Fair or white skin burns easily and tans slowly. Skin cancers and freckling are more common. Darker skin burns less and tans more easily. While skin cancer risk is much lower, pigmentation issues (such as melasma) seen much more frequently. Some other derm conditions such as lupus , keloid scars or acne are also more common with these skin types. Laser therapies differ with skin types too. Fairer skin types are more forgiving and darker skin types are much harder to treat and are more prone to pigmentation and scarring. For example, IPLs carry much higher risk for patients of darker skin type. We love our PicoWay for pigmentation and Vbeam for rosacea, which are much safer options for all skin types! #fitzpatrickscale #fitzpatrickphototype #fitzpatrickskintype #melanin #pigment #pigmentation #asianpigmentation #asianskin #paleskin #skinofcolour #sunburn #tanning #sunsmart #skincare #skinhealth #themoreyouknow #assessment #dermatology #picoway #picosecond #vbeam #skinlaser #doctorsofinstagram #skinexperts #cosmeticdermatologist #melbournedermatologist #croydon #knox #blackburn #MEDerm

11.01.2022 SPRING SUNSHINE IS HERE Warmer, sunnier weather on its way here in Australia While we all love the opportunity to spend more time outside, protecting your skin from the sun at this time of the year is just as important as it is during the middle of summer so slop on that sunscreen and slap on a hat if you are going to be venturing outdoors ... Spring is also the time of the year where we begin to shed our winter woolies and dress in clothes that expose more of our skin. Which also makes it the perfect time to examine your own skin for any changes/abnormalities or better yet make an appointment at #MEDerm to have one of our skilled doctors perform a skin check for you #spring #springhassprung #hellospring #sunshine #skincheck #checkyourskin #selfcare #skincare #lookafteryourself #sunscreen #prevention #melanoma #BCC #SCC #skincancer #dermatology #dermatologist #skinexperts #melbourneskinexpert #skinspecialist #asianskinexpert #asiancosmetics #cosmetics #aesthetics #asianaesthetics #blackburn #croydon #easternmelbourne

10.01.2022 Molluscum contagiosum As its name suggests this viral skin condition is extremely contagious. While most commonly seen in children, most adults have built up immunity towards this virus so we see mostly kids with this Molluscum contagiosum is caused by the poxvirus and can present as one lesion (as our first slide shows, this is one of our #MEDerm paed patients who had this lesion hiding ) or as multiple lesions (seen in our second slide), it is wise to see your docto...r for this What do lesions look like? Small (1-5mm), skin coloured, pearl-looking, smooth, raised bumps with a central pit. Lesions can develop redness as a result of immune response (fighting off the virus!!) and scratching. How is it contracted? Molluscum is spread by skin-to-skin contact, swimming pools, shared towels etc. Whattreatments are available? While it may clear itself without treatment, we frequently use just a drop of Cantharidin on each lesion, which is a painless solution to create a small blister the next day and it will fall off after. Some other creams such as Vitamin A cream can also help by creating a mild reaction. Also don't share towels or bath toys in the same household to prevent spread amongst kids! Does this need treatment? We encourage treatment for the bigger and more severe cases because it can sometimes leave behind small pitted scars. #molluscumcontagiosum #molluscum #viralskincondition #virus #raisedlesions #contagious #dermatology #dermatologyleaders #skinexperts #skinisin #skincare #skinhealth #skintreatment #asianskinexperts #asian #cosmetic #kidsskin #skininfection #doctorsofinstagram #postoftheday#photooftheday #instadaily #knox #croydon #blackburn #melbourne #melbournedermatologist

08.01.2022 Taking care of your skin can involve many things but one of the most important is getting regular skin checks! Along with prevention (#sunscreen ), dermatologists are your best line of defence against skin cancer as they can not only check for skin cancers but treat them in the most comprehensive way If you are due for your skin check let this be your reminder! Make an appointment with your derm so you don't regret NOT taking good care of your skin ... Be sure to seek advice from your derm for the best skin care, acne management, pigmentation treatment or anti-aging strategies. #skincare #noregrets #skinhealth #skincheck #selfcare #melbournedermatologist #seeadermatologist #protectyourskin #healthyskin #skincarecommunity #skincancer #BCC #SCC #melanoma #malignancy #melbournesummer #summeriscoming #sunshine #knox #croydon #blackburn #mederm

04.01.2022 MYTH BUSTING TIME Like many medical conditions there are a number of common misconceptions surrounding the skin condition eczema, so let us set the record straight on a few - Eczema is not known to be contagious, so you will not contract this disease from contact with eczema sufferers. However, it is well known that Staph bacteria is increased in skin of patients with eczema. So bleach bath is commonly used to reduce this and help with eczema symptoms ... - Majority of eczema is not caused by food allergies. There is only a small group of patients that we would consider food allergies e.g. babies under age of 3 with severe eczema may have cow's milk allergy. Otherwise we rarely consider food a factor for adults with eczema - Eczema generally does not cause scarring. The brown marks are usually post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (which clears after some weeks or months) - Eczema management is a journey, that should include short, medium and long term plans. Invariably, use of topical anti-inflammatory (whether steroid or non-steroid) will be prescribed and is essential to control flare up. Intermittent use of steroids, when directed properly by dermatologists, is generally safe If eczema is a condition that troubles you or a family member it is important to seek advice and management from a specialist dermatologist #eczema #dryskin #inflammedskin #treatmentplan #eczemanagement #mythbusters #facts #themoreyouknow #inflammation #dermatologist #melbournedermatologist #skinexperts #asianskinexperts #asianskin #chinese #skincare #cosmetics #asiancosmetics #aesthetics #asianaesthetics #asianskincare #postoftheday #MEDerm #croydon #blackburn #knox #easternmelbourne #melbourne

02.01.2022 Cystic acne Looking at these photos you may think this @drdesgan patient (photos posted with consent) had an excision performed on this large acne cyst...wrong! One quick and simple intralesional steroidinjection effectively melted this painful and unsightly nodule in just a few days and left minimal evidence in its wake #amazing! Cystic acne is often managed medically and many patients will commece oral medical therapy to eradicate their acne completely. We have ...seen excision and drainage done which can unfortunatley leave behind permanent scarring. It is always easier to prevent scarring than to reduce scarring later. If you know anyone with cystic acne, let them know to see a dermatologist asap!
