09.01.2022 Developing Resilience During the Program Suspension ''History Repeats - This Isn't Our First Rodeo'' The current COVID-19 challenge is unprecedented in our living memory; however it is not a new challenge for Army cadets. The following is an extract from The Torch and the Sword:... "There was a rapid turnover of attached army personnel as they were promoted or posted to meet wartime requirements and, compounding such demands, from July 1918 to June 1920 portions of cadet training were cancelled altogether as a result of the Spanish Influenza epidemic. An important outcome...was a necessary change of focus from purely military training to other forms of instruction" A hundred years ago the cadet programs faced long periods of suspension. The cadet programs were able to restart when the epidemic was passed by applying the following familiar values: Courage All the cadets and staff demonstrated resilience and acted with integrity, moral and physical courage throughout the crisis, and encouraged others to do the same. Initiative All members of the program sought opportunities to improve themselves and the program. Innovative ways of doing cadet activities or training were planned and implemented where possible. Respect Cadets and staff were exemplars when it came to adopting practices that helped and supported their community. Respecting the direction of Governments and authorities has always been core to the Army. Teamwork The cadets and staff supported each other during the tough times and worked together to build a cadet program for the future. It took two years for the cadet program to rebound after the Spanish Influenza. This may seem like a long time but it was understandable given the lack of technology, connectivity and the absence of a common unified structure and purpose. Today's cadet program is better placed than ever to demonstrate the resilience, innovation and values needed to rebound quickly from the current challenge. Resilience Planning. HQAAC is well progressed on developing a Resilience Plan that will ensure that, wherever possible, cadets and staff can remain engaged in the program, continue to develop and train and also contribute to their communities at a time that communities need it most. In the coming weeks and months all cadets and staff in the AAC will be called on to demonstrate our Army values as we demonstrate the resilience needed to bounce back from the current challenge. Key activities and opportunities will be provided through the Resilience Plan for implementation by staff and cadets. It is a ‘whole of AAC’ Team effort.
