23.01.2022 Warrior Mindset & Fitness 28 Day Challenge. On the 30th of January we are kicking off our first challenge of 2021. Traditionally I have not been a massive fan of challenges even though they’ve become all the rage within the fitness industry but when I dig down on that a little it’s just the way they’re structured. ... Often the focus is on weight or inches lost. Maybe even both. But these are always short term indicators. Now if you like that stuff of course monitor it as you go but the true focus should always be on performance. Are you improving? Is that measurable? If so how? I spent 17 years in the military and a large portion of that as a qualified Physical Trainer whose responsibility was to ensure my company and my battalion were battle ready. It didn’t matter their age, experience or fitness level. What mattered was whether or not I was able to assist them in being better at the job no matter what role they played and then did they have the physical capacity to keep doing that job for an extended period of time when on deployment? I will let you in on a secret, not once did I weigh my soldiers and not once did I measure their waist line or calculate their BMI. It just wasn’t a metric that gave any relevance to whether or not they were battle ready. But here’s the thing, what I did focus on was mindset giving them positive coping skills to handle any eventuality because war can be unpredictable. They needed to be ready for that. Part of that was ensuring they had the honesty and integrity within themselves to turn up whenever possible and to give their best effort when they did turn up. No hitting snooze, no looking at the workout and thinking ‘nah, I don’t feel like doing that’ and definitely no excuses like ‘I’m no good at [insert least favourite exercise] so I won’t go today’. We grow stronger by showing up on the days we least want to and by doing things that we sometimes know we’re going to suck at but we show up anyway. In my experience that’s ultimately what makes the difference between those who excel at their roles and those who just show up when everything looks, feels and seems right.
