22.01.2022 Mr BAIRD & TOM BROWN at MT KEMBLA HOTEL 'Sharing local knowledge Further too my 5th August post re :- George William Turner, (father of Doreen Baird wife of O...swald Baird). A bit more from the Baird Family Album. Source Baird Family member & my scratch notes. Posted photo, note on back, Mount Kembla Hotel 1940’s Mr Baird & Tom Brown. Some Jotters may recall Tom Brown (Uncle Tom to many Kembla Kids of my generation), Mr Tom Brown lost his life in an accident at Kembla Heights Bowling Club. A club in which he was deeply involved as a trustee. The accident occurred in July 1958 and shocked the whole Kembla community. The bus transporting mourners to his funeral was filled to capacity when it left KH resulting in a call from the driver for an additional bus to be provided at Mount Kembla. Any help in identification of others in the photo would be appreciated. Comments from my August post added that Oswald Baird had a market garden at the Cordeaux area. Additional notes from Trove of South Coast Times 1946,47 show O.D. & T. Baird as being involved in the Blackberry picking trade indicating Highest prices paid, tins supplied, picking in the Mount Kembla, Kembla Heights, Cordeaux & Macquarie Pass areas.' 19.01.2022 Beneath Black Skies - A History of Coal Mining in the Illawarra, by Why Documentaries The Illawarra once held a reputation for the dustiest and gassiest coal m...ines in Australia. The south coast miners were regarded by some as the most militant miners in the industry, as they were at the forefront of campaigns such as the fight against dust and the 35 hr week. How did Australia’s first mineral export shape the men and women who lived the mining life beneath black skies? This remarkable history is told through the miners, their wives, unions, historians, and mining official’s perspectives. Narrated by Australian actor David Field, with a striking musical score and dramatic re-enactments of the late 19th and early 20th century, this film is a community treasure of Australian significance.
