19.01.2022 CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT - 2020 MT. WYCHEPROOF CUP DAY On Friday 18 September 2020 Racing Victoria issued an official media release summarising the future of upcoming feature Spring Racing Carnival race days. Highlighted in the release was the significant news that the renowned Mt. Wycheproof Cup Day, known affectionately as ‘Derby Day in the Country’ will not be staged.... The Club has been racing since 1881, and ironically during this time only officially surrendered to a cancelled meeting during the war years. The Committee are already actively planning towards ensuring next year will be bigger and better than ever. The community-celebrated event, which is synonymous with families and all those who have ever lived in Wycheproof or had connections to the town and district, was set to wow the crowds and giddy-up again in a few weeks. The Track Manager having spent significant hours to curate and prepare an immaculate surface for country racing gallops. This work, combined with the efforts and volunteer labour of the Wycheproof Golf Club has the entire precinct looking superb. It’s fair to say the Racecourse has never looked better. With businesses reliant on the tourism dollar, and after months of tough times and isolation resulting from COVID-19 restrictions, the Mt. Wycheproof & District Racing Club Committee were committed to hosting the event, however this desire simply wasn’t realistic if the Club were unable to accommodate the fans, the community, the huge crowds of racegoers on course. Naturally the Committee were also mindful of the need for horses to be having a run, especially at this time of year. It was a difficult decision to make in cancelling the event, yet an easy one too, given this event belongs to the community and the health of all patrons, and those who live in Wycheproof and the Buloke Shire is of paramount importance. The Committee stated that as much as we were holding onto the hope that we could host another wonderful Derby Day in the Country, we have had to concede that without crowds being permissible due to COVID-19 in Victoria, the likelihood of all planning coming together and restrictions being lifted in time for the big day simply wasn’t realistic. Hence, it’s with a very heavy heart that we made the difficult decision, in consultation with our racing peers and governing bodies, not to stage the Mt. Wycheproof Cup Day this year. As a volunteer Sporting Club in Buloke Shire, the Committee urges everyone to add Mt. Wycheproof Cup Day to their bucket list in 2021, with plans already being put in place to reconnect with sponsors, stakeholders, marquee guests, train travel enthusiasts and many others, and to host crowds of annual visitors again to the Buloke region.

03.01.2022 The Wycheproof community fondly remembers Graham Salisbury and 1992 Melbourne Cup winner Sub Zero. Graham and ‘Subbie’ stepped into Wycheproof as part of the 20...09 Melbourne Cup tour. After morning tea at Grandview Lodge Nursing Home, the two stopped by the Royal Mail Hotel before heading home. Vale Graham Salisbury a great friend to thoroughbred racing and Sub Zero a champion.
