25.01.2022 WARNING: This is very confronting. If you choose to read on you will find out my worst nightmare (and I guess that of every parent to a vulnerable child) and why I am trying my hardest to ensure Emma will become independent.

22.01.2022 Breathing. We all take it for granted. We slow it to calm ourselves, hold it to dive underwater and time it when we speak. Emma has no active breath control. She relies solely on her body's ability to breathe involuntarily. As part of her ongoing physical therapy she is learning to become aware of her breathing and how to control it.

20.01.2022 Hi friends around Australia. Please sign and share. Emma is very lucky to have an amazing school who looks after her but there are so many children with high support needs that are still being disadvantaged by the education system. Her friend Emily who lives in NSW is one of them. Thank you all! https://www.change.org/p/department-of-education-nsw-govern

19.01.2022 Cairns friends please support this petition. As most of you are aware Emma has been and still is one of many locals affected by the below standard service capabilities of Cairns Hospital. We deserve better and need a fully funded University Hospital. Thank you https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au//petit/petition-details

19.01.2022 Hi friends! Please head over to our friend Livio's page, give it a like and share it around. Thank you! https://www.facebook.com/A-Pup-for-Livio-110943370683087/

19.01.2022 COMMUNITY INTEREST POST. Please read! I am sharing this to show you that discrimination is still EVERYWHERE and that for businesses people with disabilities are still second class. ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY IS ESSENTIAL, NOT OPTIONAL! We have had this happen to us once. Luckily, I was permitted to carry Emma. Since, I have only been flying Qantas, purely because of its status and the almost certainty of an airbridge. But I should not have to make this choice based on accessibility.

19.01.2022 Emma earned herself a reward for amazing progress in literacy: a golden ticket. She is very excited to be allowed to watch a movie together with the other golden ticket holders.

17.01.2022 Bookweek Parade day. Of course mum didn't get the memo until late so instead of being a monkey, Emma got to be herself: a girl with a smile like sunshine who loves her toy monkey Bella, wearing her school uniform with jeans dungarees and her pink backpack. She was so excited to be able to dress herself and be herself. Emma always reminds me to enjoy the simple things in life and how much joy they bring.

17.01.2022 Emma received another certificate of achievement today. Her literacy skills are improving week by week and she is excited to learn to read. This progress is only possible through the dedication and collaboration of Emma's support team, that includes our speech pathologist, occupational therapist, teaching staff and support workers.

16.01.2022 If all goes well, Emma and I will be traveling to Sydney in 6 December for two weeks. Emma needs an urgent review with her speech pathologist and intensive physio. It's all booked in and I am just unsure about our flights (Qantas is in chaos mode) when we will come back and how to best prepare for possible quarantine. While we are away I need someone to collect recycling for us. This will be hands on work for a couple of hours each on the two Mondays and Fridays or Saturday's between the 7 and 19 December with a chance to be extended due to quarantine... but let's cross that bridge when we get there.... Please comment or pm. Thank you!

16.01.2022 just mum early morning walk sounds of nature

16.01.2022 So today we checked out race running bikes, which are specifically designed for people with lower limb impairments. It was a hot/cold experience and quite sobering for me. Emma was really excited and after some adjustments we found a good setup for her that allowed for her dystonic spasms. Stationary Emma was well supported and had a good posture (see pic in comments). Unfortunately it wasn't the same when she tried walking. As you can see in the video her right leg is rotate...d and dragging behind. This is the result of a dislocating hip. 5 years ago Emma had a bilateral hip surgery that was mismanaged and since we have been dealing with the consequences . Current science / therapies do not have a solution. Part of Emma's injured brain is sending a constant signal to her right adductor to do exactly that, adduct, constantly and ongoing. The only way to stop it is to stop/interrupt the signal from the brain. I should have known better but then there is hope and my drive to give Emma every opportunity. Going forward we will keep working on fine motor skills and communication and keep hoping. See more

15.01.2022 So this weekend was all about Emma's love for fast and loud cars. On Saturday we checked out these amazing machines close up and were treated to their roaring sounds. A massive Thankyou to the owners and drivers who were amazing and made Emma's day by letting her shut the doors and revving up the engines! She was absolutely fascinated by these Ferraris but eventually fell in love with the Ford Falcon Ute. And guess what? She picked the winning team (TSD)! Today we watched the cars come down the Gillies past the Mountain View Hotel and look who stopped by to say hi. @Targatasmania

13.01.2022 Hi guys! Check this out. I mentioned to you a while back that there were some sailors moored in Cairns who contributed a fair amount of cans towards our recycling fundraiser. Well, they are now quarantining in Fiji and have some time on their hands. So they decided to do this crazy thing, running a marathon around the deck of their boat to raise funds for Emma. Here is Captain Johnno explaing it all. https://www.instagram.com/tv/CCXZ3FQAadK/

13.01.2022 10 years! What a journey it has been so far. Thank you for coming along with us.

13.01.2022 She wears her sunglasses at night

12.01.2022 Driving lesson #2. This time we made up and down the entire Palm Cove Esplanade. By the way: How amazing is Winter in FNQ!

11.01.2022 Emma's independence relies so much on technology. There are so many innovations out there, many of them expensive and unable to be trialled prior to purchase. We have been very fortunate to receive a donation from the Far North Queensland Youth Assistance Fund allowing us to buy this supportive brace which enables Emma to actively stand and step with only minimal assistance. For the past weeks Emma has been practicing stepping every week during sessions with our amazing physi...o Jess @PhysioMotion Cairns. Besides having a lot of fun, Emma works hard to the point of exhaustion because she is determined to control her body. I would have loved to show you a video of Emma's effort but I am always needed to assist so recording quality video footage has been difficult. For all of you who are wondering... this brace cannot achieve miracles and seeing Emma walking one day is unlikely. However, it is an amazing tool that helps Emma with spatial awareness, balance, weight bearing and stepping, all vital skills required for independent standing transfers. #fnqyaf Thank you for your support #ikanbrace See more

09.01.2022 Happy Sunday Emma thinks we should wear flower headbands more often.

09.01.2022 Emma got Bella a new outfit. Creativity is when a cat collar becomes a belt.

08.01.2022 Emma loves to hang out at the Five Star creche while mum is working out. Win Win !

08.01.2022 Here is the link to make a donation and support us and the 10 Fidelis Crew for their marathon effort. They will start tomorrow moring 7.30am FIJI TIME.

07.01.2022 Exactly 12 months ago Emma received a couple of stemcell transfusion and has since presented a few important but physically not very noticeable improvements (tongue mobility, cognitive processing and resilience). Only when I was watching back the recording of this session I realized how much Emma has actually improved but also how many specific symptoms she has to overcome to be functional. If you observe closely you will see: slow processing and motor planning dystonic... spasms, twists and twitching weakness in and lack of control of both hands and all fingers due to hypermobility caused by dystonia high tone and spasticity in both arms strong retained primitive reflexes (usually integrated by the age of 1) Emma's performance in this video is not special or extraordinary. It simply shows her hard work, determination and the joy she feels to overcome the impact the brain injury has on her body. See more

05.01.2022 Flashback to 2011. Look at these chubby cheeks

02.01.2022 Guess what! Well, it's actually guess where! Emma's forever home. I have been working towards buying a home for Emma for the past couple of years and thanks to Emmas Oma and all of you it finally happened! It will need lots of work and keep me busy, and out of trouble , for the next few years. I hereby extend an invitation to any of you who are bored and looking for a project or just need to let go of some emotions. Ripping out old carpets or breaking down walls? Yep, just come on over .

01.01.2022 I surprised Emma with a road trip up to Atherton today to pick up her very own Christmas tree. She was so excited. It will be amazing to see both her and the tree grow old together.
