22.01.2022 A 45-year-old Sydney man has been charged for allegedly importing approximately 144 kilograms of cocaine hidden in hydraulic cylinders. ABF officers identified anomalies within the pistons of the two hydraulic cylinders. Inside the large pistons was a total of six metal drums, each concealing 24 blocks of white powder. A presumptive test of the powder returned a positive result for cocaine. AFP Crime Scene Investigators removed the cocaine blocks from the hydraulic cylinders ...and substituted them with an inert substance for a controlled delivery of the consignment to a warehouse in Botany, NSW. The total approximate weight of the cocaine was determined to be 144 kilograms, which has an estimated street value of $64.8 million. Police will allege in court that the 45-year-old man took delivery of the consignment at a Botany warehouse and spent a significant amount of time pulling apart the cylinders and accessing the hidden consignment. The man was arrested at a Botany warehouse and charged. These offences carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. To read more visit: https://newsroom.abf.gov.au//ce6aea03-f6af-4a04-8052-2560c

21.01.2022 A 55-year-old man was sentenced to four-and-a-half years’ jail by the Perth District Court for importing approximately 179 grams of heroin wrapped in five pellets concealed inside his body. The French national was arrested in Western Australia, after Australian Border Force (ABF) officers selected him for an examination when he arrived in Perth on a flight from Bangkok. Nothing illegal was found in his luggage but swabs taken of his mobile phone allegedly revealed traces of L...SD. ABF officers then arranged for a non-medical body scan, which returned a positive indication of internal concealment. The man was referred to the Australian Federal Police and was taken by ambulance to hospital, where he passed five pellets that weighed 270 grams. The heroin inside weighed approximately 179 grams, which is worth approximately $89,500. The seizure prevented approximately 1790 ‘street level’ deals reaching the Perth community. Forensic analysis by the AFP determined the drugs had a 67 per cent purity, which calculated the total pure weight of the heroin at 119.8 grams. The 55-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of importing a marketable quantity of a border controlled drug, contrary to section 307.2 of the Criminal Code 1995 (Cth). 21.01.2022 A 46-year-old man is expected to face Adelaide Magistrate’s Court after being charged over an alleged plot to import 20 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value of $20 million - into South Australia from Greece. The man was arrested after Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Australian Border Force (ABF) officers executed search warrants at two inner-city Adelaide properties. A joint agency investigation was launched after ABF officers in South Australia selected ...an air cargo consignment labelled as ‘welding’ for examination. A wooden crate containing two welding machines was X-rayed, with anomalies revealed in both. ABF officers removed a panel from one piece of machinery and found an electronic safe. Inside the safe was nine rectangular packages which allegedly contained a white powder, with tests returning a presumptive positive result to cocaine. AFP officers were called in and dismantled the second welder, where they found another safe with nine similar packages stored inside. Forensic tests by the AFP have confirmed the 18 seized packages contain a total of approximately 20 kilograms of cocaine. This equates to about 20,000 ‘street level’ deals of cocaine, which police say can currently be sold for about $5 million wholesale, and which has an approximate ‘street value’ of $20 million. The 67-year-old, who lives in Sydney, was caught at Perth International Airport on 11 October 2018 after returning on a flight from Dubai. Biosecurity officers noticed anomalies in an x-ray of the man’s baggage and referred him to Australian Border Force (ABF) officers who loca...ted 29 cartons and two loose packets of cigarettes. The man later admitted he purchased the cigarettes in France and Egypt, and claimed they were for personal use. 05.01.2022 Beijing has banned Queensland timber imports and suspended trade with another Australian grain exporter. The new uncertainty comes after China's Customs agency said it would block timber imports from Queensland (and is likely to be extended to all of Australia we are now hearing) after finding a bark beetle in a shipment. A China foreign ministry spokesman confirmed on Monday that Chinese authorities have repeatedly found biohazards in imports of Australian timber. Australi...an grain handler Emerald Grain was also suspended from exporting barley to China when local officials claimed to have found weed seeds (bromus rigidus, a grasslike weed) in a consignment. Australia's largest grain exporter, CBH, was blacklisted by Chinese authorities in September for similar reasons. China is Australia’s largest barley export market, buying around 70 per cent of Australian barley. In May, the industry suffered a blow after China imposed a combined 80.5 per cent anti-dumping and countervailing duty on exports following an 18-month investigation, making Australian barley more expensive to Chinese importers. Agriculture Minister David Littleproud said the Government was aware of both the timber and the barley trade sanctions. He said Australia would "work with the Chinese authorities to investigate and resolve these issues". He also said "Australia has strong regulatory controls that underpin the integrity and biosecurity of all products exported." In Shanghai, Chinese customs seized a Western Australian rock lobster shipment for laboratory testing. Australia’s trade minister, Simon Birmingham, said that the rock lobster shipments were being checked for metal content levels and the Australian government and industry groups were seeking further clarification from Beijing. China is also the main market for nearly all of Australia’s rock lobster exports, worth around A$750 million (US$527 million) last year. Goods that arrived at Chinese ports before Friday 30/10/20 are allowed to enter China, but those that arrive after will not be cleared by customs even if they are placed in a bonded warehouse. Chinese importers who have shipments arriving after Friday 30/10/20 have been told that they will have to bear the expense of uncleared goods and have been advised to cancel future orders to reduce their losses. The bans on copper ore and copper concentrate, as well as sugar, are expected to be introduced this week, according to multiple trade sources in China.

03.01.2022 A large cargo ship can take up to 8km to come to a complete stop (with gears in full reverse). Combine an empty cargo ship (with half of its propeller out of the water, therefore, no complete manoeuvrability) and going 8 knots instead of the usual 6kn while berthing and this is what you get... In early 2020 the Milano Bridge container ship brushed against another container ship, Seaspan Ganges, before knocking into one of three gantry cranes along the pier. Thankfully only 1 crane operator was injured. Source: Splash on Youtube

02.01.2022 A WA man is expected to face Perth Magistrates Court over the seizure of illicit drugs and $197,000 cash, after a joint investigation into an intercepted mail package containing methamphetamine. ABF officers at the Sydney Gateway Facility found about one kilogram of a white crystalline substance concealed in the lining of a black handbag, when they examined the package from Canada. The substance returned a presumptive positive test result for methamphetamine and the matter wa...s referred to the AFP. AFP officers replaced the illicit drugs with an inert substance and, in partnership with ACIC, facilitated delivery to the alleged intended recipient, a 31-year-old Secret Harbour man. AFP investigators executed a search warrant at the man’s home and found a black handbag, which they allege had contained the substituted drugs, with the lining torn open. The delivery packaging and box were found in a bin. Other items seized included the substituted substance repackaged into two vacuum sealed bags; 150 grams of methamphetamine in a separate vacuum sealed bag; approximately 14 grams of marijuana; assorted drug-related paraphernalia, including scales and a vacuum sealer, and an encrypted mobile telephone. Police also allegedly found $197,000 cash in a backpack in the man’s wardrobe. To read more visit: https://newsroom.abf.gov.au//a-costly-delivery-wa-man-char

01.01.2022 Let's talk about Marine Insurance! Many things can go wrong with a shipment and the list is huge! Theft of goods, loss or damage, sinking, capsizing, container dumping, loading and unloading incidents, warehousing, storage issues, and fire, just to name a few. Many people out there are pretty unconcerned about Maritime Insurance as they feel the cost can sometimes be more than the value of the goods they are shipping and will decided to go without.... What most people aren't aware of is that the cost of losing your shipment may be a lot more than just the cost of your cargo.. it is important to know that when you put your cargo on a vessel you actually enter into a joint venture with the shipping line and every other Shipper with cargo on that voyage. If any of the above happens then you and every other shipper with cargo on that vessel are liable to share the costs of damage or loss even if your container or shipment is fine!
