25.01.2022 Did you miss the 2020 Tasmanian Architecture Awards presentations? The full recording is available to view on the AusArchitects channel on YouTube (https://www....youtube.com/channel/UClsvQ-XYn5g38wIHN52hNNg). 2020 Tasmanian Architecture Awards - Public Architecture, supported by @lysaght_au Alan C Walker Award for Public Architecture: Kingborough Community Hub by @march_studio Situated in the heart of an up-and-coming town center, the Kingborough Community Hub is stage one of a council-led development. The project comprises three main buildings offering a variety of spaces for large and small group activities with maximum opportunity for reconfiguration. The architects have skilfully repurposed part of the former Kingston High School gymnasium, a move that reduces material usage and embodied energy, but also preserves the site’s history as a place of play and engagement. March Studio have confidently responded to a vacant site and have set a precedent for the calibre of development that will continue to grow around it. Congratulations! #tasarchiawards2020

20.01.2022 1+2 Architecture is consultant architect to John Wardle Architects, for the River's Edge building (part of the UTas Northern Transformation). This is a vibrant new academic building providing flexible, collaborative learning, teaching and work spaces for students and staff. With panoramic views of the North Esk river and mountains to the east, the place-based design response for River's Edge is deeply rooted in preserving and illuminating the distinctive qualities of the site.

19.01.2022 Gibson’s Mill is a heritage listed structure which has stood on the Hobart waterfront since the mid19th century. It operated as a flour mill until the late 20th century when it was converted to office space and car parking. Clients with vision and a commitment to high design value architecture, commissioned 1+2 to explore the potential of converting the building to boutique hotel accommodation. It was a highly technical project, requiring virtual modelling of structural syste...ms, fire scenarios, and acoustic environments in order to achieve contemporary performance standards while revealing the original cast iron, timber and brick structure - a futuristic approach to preserving the past. The architectural solution was achieved through a process of close collaboration between the building owners, contractors, heritage authorities and consultants. The architectural intent was to reveal the story of the old structure by removing unsympathetic recent additions and interiors and to compliment the richness of the heritage structure with simple and refined new elements. #1plus2architecture #apartmentliving #hotel #loft #tassiestyle #tasmania #architecturephotography #blackandwhite

15.01.2022 Battery Point House construction site visit. Foreman Bruce Clements of Delpero & Clements Builders has been exceptional throughout the build and is on program for Practical Completion in a few weeks.

13.01.2022 Works have been completed on our office façade. The skilled paint removal process has peeled back to reveal the beautiful layers of history of the building. Prior to 1 + 2 Architecture renovating, the building was home to the much loved and iconic Pauls Bodyworks, which operated for over 50 years. Known and rumored uses before this include a pet store and garage for trucks heading to the west coast. 1+2 Architecture looks forward to being part of the buildings next chapter in Hobart's history. Thank you again for Hobart City Council for their support and Impact Paintings skillful work!

11.01.2022 Signalman’s Quarters The history of the Signalman’s Quarters is intrinsically linked to the fascinating story of the Hobart semaphore system and the establishment of the batteries and signal stations of what is now Princess Park in Battery Point. The original stone cottage was constructed in 1853 by government tender, to house the signalman of Mulgrave Battery. The signal station formed part of the semaphore network originally established in 1811, which connected Hobart to b...oth ships in the harbour and locations as remote as Port Arthur. Remnant walls from the original cottage remain within the core of the house which has seen a series of modifications and renovations and extensions between the 1850’s and 1906, in 1985 and most recently in 2020. 1+2 Architecture were engaged to design significant restoration works to the existing house and a new extension incorporating new kitchen, laundry, bathrooms, living areas and external works. The restoration works involved demolition of recent unsympathetic additions to the house and conservation works to the significant heritage fabric of the house including restoration of stonework and reconstruction of the verandah. The new extension was designed to provide new living and service areas that invite sunlight and provide visual connections to the external landscape and the park. The new architecture is contemporary in form and detail yet has been designed to sit sympathetically in relation to the existing house and its heritage context. The form and materials of the new building are reflective of the evolving cluster of informal outbuildings that historically sat at the rear (street side) of the original house since it was first constructed. The new chimney is imprinted with telegraphic signals intended as a subtle reference to the history of the site. Photography: Joe Grey Photography

01.01.2022 Cloudy Bay Beach House is located at Cloudy Bay on the southern end of Bruny Island. Its 33 hectare, beach front site, comprised a combination of pre-disturbed farmland and heath covered coastal dune. A primary objective of the project was to create an appropriately scaled and sited intervention which minimised impact on its natural environment, while re-generating the pre-disturbed landscape by removing weeds and reintroducing native species.
