25.01.2022 Looks like a cricket ball, is as hard as a cricket ball and sounds like a cricket ball when it falls on your van roof!!! It’s a seed pod of the African Mahogany tree that is prolifically planted here in Darwin - it’s a shallow rooted tree that simply falls over in a cyclone and is planted in caravan parks because of its capacity to grow fast!!! When it falls it cracks then slowly opens and releases the seeds
25.01.2022 Litchfield National Park NT would have to be our favourite place (besides Bitter Springs NT) We visited the magnetic Termite mounds on the way to a couple of waterholes - this one is 5m tall and the area is set aside to explain the workings of how these tiny termites build their mounds (North-South) to avoid the westerly sun drying out the mounds Did you know:- the worker ant who builds these mountainous mounds is completely blind!! #NTAustralia #termitemounds
24.01.2022 Visited the Dr Arratta Memorial Hospital museum today at Muttaburra Qld - it’s as though the hospital just closed its doors and everything inside is in the same state it was many years ago - this site was the Muttaburra and District Hospital from 1884 -1989 Such a credit to the ladies and gentlemen volunteers especially Butter McKenzie whose dedicated efforts put this memorial together Thank you John (JL) for being an expert guide today The painter who painted inside said when he worked there at night, doors opened and closed - resident ghost?
24.01.2022 Ilfracombe - The Machinery Mile Such a wonderful town that is proud of its history - loved this little place - population 259 people (see what determination and dedication, a small town can do to preserve its history) so well done! #ilfracombe #machinerymile All these vehicles and machinery played an integral part in the setting up of this little town of Ilfracombe Qld
23.01.2022 Aramac - traditional grounds of the Iningai, in 1850’s a pastoralist and 3rd Premier of Qld, Robert Ramsay Mackenzie (R.R.Mackenzie) carved his initials in a tree which was later to become the name of this town R.R.Mackenzie...R.R.Mac...Aramac!! Such a wonderful historic town in central Queensland
22.01.2022 Received a call last night that they may have found Bozo, but fortunately it wasn’t him so he’s probably still having a rootin tootin time in Darwin enjoying his retirement freedom - fly safe little man
21.01.2022 Florence Falls, Litchfield Park NT what a beautiful place to swim
20.01.2022 We explored the WWll Darwin Oil Storage Tunnels which are opposite the Waterfront Precinct - built from concrete formed over steel, these underground tunnels would withstand an explosion and were built to store oil/fuel - but by the time the tunnels were finished the threat of war with the Japanese was gone and these tunnels have never stored oil (a few stored jet fuel for a couple of years) - prior to this, oil was stored in above ground tanks and in the 1942 attack of Darwin by the Japanese, 7 of the 11 tanks were bombed; thus these underground ones were built
18.01.2022 Took Zoe to Marlow Lagoon Pet Park Palmerston, Darwin NT, this morning (yes I woke up early to do this Brenton Garton) - what a beautiful area for off leash dogs - all the dogs there got on well with each other including a gorgeous grey 3yr old staffy who swam in the lagoon with Zoe
16.01.2022 If you ever go to Muttaburra Qld, you MUST get a guided tour through this amazing store - A.A.Cassimatis and his family moved from Greece in 1913, and established a business in Muttaburra. From humble beginnings they established a multi-purpose store and it became an emporium housing a bank, green grocery, habidashery, cafe, white goods, liquor dealership and motor spirits agency. A.A. Cassimatis passed away in 1942 and his son George took over the business with his wife and ...5 children - in 1987 after 60 years of trading Mrs Cassmatis (George’s wife) passed away and the decision was made to close the store - the store and cottage have been made into a museum showcasing living conditions of the early 1900s and dedicated to the memory of this remarkable family and their contribution to the Muttaburra area #Barcaldineregionalcouncil #Muttaburra #AACassimatisgeneralstore See more
14.01.2022 Visited the Old Qantas Hangar now home of the Motor Vehicle Enthusiasts Club whose members salvage old or destroyed vehicles - well worth a visit and a credit to this group of passionate motor enthusiasts - the vehicles below are in pristine condition
14.01.2022 Walking towards Buley Rockhole Litchfield National Park - series of terraced waterholes that we wallowed like buffalos enjoying the coolness and clear water #NTAustralia
14.01.2022 At Aramac Qld - this is Henry Arthur Readford (Redford in Qld) who was a Stockman, drover and Cattle thief - he and 3 of his mates stole 1000 cattle and a big white bull from a property in Aramac and drove them across the Stezlecki desert to Adelaide - he was caught but the jury dismissed the case because of his ingenuity in successfully traversing a route not done by anyone else. Aramac people re-enacted this trek every year until drought forced its closure - a museum is now here in his honour. There are now a series of bulls around Aramac as an historic tourist attraction
13.01.2022 Muttaburra is the home of the Muttaburrasaurus Langdoni a herbivorous ornithopoda dinosaur - bones were discovered in 1963 on the banks of the Thomson river on a local property owned by the Langdon family and is now housed in the Brisbane Museum - replica of this dinosaur is at the Muttaburra Museum Such a wonderful town full of history !
13.01.2022 Muttaburra is a tiny town with a population of approx 100 - their Sculpture trail is one to be admired! The idea came from local sculptor Milynda Rogers, who needed a platform to display her work - result is an outdoor exhibition for all to see - creatively turning junk into art
13.01.2022 This is my favourite swimming spot in Litchfield NP - Wangi Falls We should have named our page swimming around Australia because we’ve found some beautiful places
12.01.2022 Some of the animals and birds we’ve encountered on our trip so far
12.01.2022 Beautiful Darwin Street Art!! In 2019, Activate Darwin encouraged Darwin residents to submit ideas that would help to activate, green, and improve walkability in the city. Over 90 submissions were received and 11,000 votes cast for the shortlisted ideas - this project is one of those successful ideas
11.01.2022 Left Aramac at 7.30am this morning to beat the heat - got back at 3pm - completed the Lake Dunn sculpture trail....What an amazing trail it was!!! There are heaps of photos here of sculptures all done by local artist Milynda Rogers - what a remarkably talented lady she is! AND...we found Wally!!!! (There’s a Where’s Wally on the trail and he’s very hard to locate but we did it!!!)... #MilyndaRogers #Aramac #barcaldineregionalcouncil #outbackart #greynomadsaustralia
09.01.2022 We visited the waterholes in the area while we were in Muttaburra - so very dry and the heat was 38 - 42 degrees Would love to see these places after a wet season - the Barcaldine Regional Council do a remarkable job of maintenance and landcare #Barcaldineregionalcouncil
09.01.2022 Found this historic tin mine Bamboo Creek Tin Mine at Litchfield NP - we marvel at how hard the pioneers of Australia worked - hot, dusty and weather problems forced the owners to close it but not before they mined this little outback spot for its rich Tin deposits - heaps of sparking Mica everywhere we looked! #NTAustralia #tinmine
09.01.2022 Spent the morning at Darwin Waterfront, Darwin City, Australia with Zoe and Miriam Williams and Grant Williams
07.01.2022 We did the original Jumping Crocodile Cruise today (said we wouldn’t do it after seeing them in their natural environment but this was well worth the trip)- Crocs jaws can chomp down a tonne per metre I.e. the jaws on a 4 metre croc will chomp down on its prey with a 4tonne bite - in the 70’s there were 5,000 crocs in Darwin but now because they are protected that number has jumped to 100,000 !!! We saw about 9 big crocs today and heaps of hawks diving down for their daily... feed of chopped seafood The Original Adelaide River Queen Jumping Crocodile Cruises #NTAustralia #crocodilecruises #darwin #Northernterritory See more
07.01.2022 Our little Lab was chosen to be on the cover page of Helga's Pet Resort, Virginia Northern Territory If you are ever in Darwin, this is the place to go if you are touring the National Parks - caring, loving people and our girl was so happy when we picked her up - it’s a great place and highly recommended by vets and ‘word of mouth’ for pet minding up here in the NT!!
07.01.2022 Visited Aramac Tramway Museum today - the major rail line bypassed Aramac and went to Barcaldine so the enterprising Aramac citizens built their own private tramway from Aramac to Barcaldine to transport their wool and people therefore avoiding flooding and bogging their precious cargo on the very primitive dirt roads - it lasted from 1913 until its closure in 1976. Aramac was the premier wool producing district in Australia The original engine aka Aunt Emma is still working and there are plans to build a 2km rail track around the township to transport tourists around Aramac (very proactive council out here) #barcaldineregionalcouncil
06.01.2022 Darwin’s Botanic Gardens were lovely to explore earlier in the day while it wasn’t too hot - of course Zoe found a waterhole ()
06.01.2022 At Wangi Falls Litchfield National Park NT We had a long cool swim or 3 there!! So clear and cool - our favourite place in Litchfield #NTAustralia #WangiFalls
04.01.2022 This is controlled burning which happens regularly up here in the NT - the cycaid looks burnt until a pod appears then shoots appear and the end result is a bright green foliage in contrast to the red dirt and blackened tree trunks - isn’t nature wonderful!!!
03.01.2022 Today’s history lesson is about the abandoned Gunn Point prison about 35kms east of Darwin - it was established in1972 due to overcrowding at Fannie Bay prison and functioned until 1995 when it closed due to staff shortages, high operating costs but was self sufficient in its time - Gunn Point beach is a great fishing and hunting spot now (we got lost and went to the beach instead of turning left at the graffitied water tank (I was the spotter for the dirt road tracks for our 4WD and it got a bit hairy in spots)
02.01.2022 White Station Circle on the Lake Dunn sculpture trail at Aramac is a healing circle connected to 6 other circles throughout the world (Japan, Tibet, Madagascar, Peru, Turkey and USA) When you step into the centre you are connected to the energies of all 7 circles - located on a private property and used for meditation, prayer, healing of mind and body. .... I asked the universe to favour this area in their next big wet #lakedunnaquaticcentre #lakedunn... #barcaldineregionalcentre See more
01.01.2022 Yesterday we stumbled on Channel Island NT accessible by a bridge from the mainland - it was originally a Leper Colony (Leprasaurium) from 1931-1955 where indigenous and white people with the disease were sent to live (some as young as 4!) - they had limited fresh water but managed to grow their own vegetables - Catholic sisters of the Sacred Heart became the nursing staff until overcrowding closed it in 1955 and relocated to East Arm Leprasaurium in S/E Darwin - in 1982 it also closed and Leprosy was then treated in normal hospitals (increased education and more knowledge of the disease) Very interesting that Channel Island Leprosaurium is Heritage listed but nobody is allowed in except the staff of the massive Gas and Power stations that now reside on the island
01.01.2022 Melbourne Cup Day at Muttaburra Pub - the locals treated us as family - we only knew 1 person (John who took us on a tour of the town yesterday) We won $140 in the Calcutta and a meat tray!! Made heaps of friends who want us back next year for the local races or the Cup - Josh, just love your pistol!!! Mark Maxfield
