21.01.2022 For all of you missing Churchill Island's resident cockie George, here is a video of him interacting with a human and her camera last week. He has been very busy walking around supervising the staff while the visitors have been away! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etOI-ryWdVk&feature=youtu.be Thanks to the Youtube poster.

21.01.2022 A favorite object at the Easter Festivals, and in the historic farm machinery display is the Furphy cart, restored by two farm staff in the late 1990s. The Furphy carts were an essential on farms for many years to keep water up to thirsty working horses and workers. The origin of the name developed into the Australian slang meaning "tall story" by the soldiers who gathered around the Furphy cart to drink and share news and yarns with the driver, who brought news from camp to camp. Pictured are the cart in the CI collection, and an image of soldiers gathered around during WW1.

19.01.2022 Time to de-stress and tune in to a slower world where the biggest stress of the day is whether your horse will throw a shoe. Here is the link to the FOCIS video: "Working Horses on Churchill Island" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrZzdG0Xgos Well worth a look and so informative. For those of you who have watched before, enjoy again.

18.01.2022 Former CI curator FOCIS secretary Christine Grayden's essay from the talk on "The fascinating residents of Churchill Island" is now available to read on the Phillip Island and District Historical Society website here: http://pidhs.org.au/essay/66 Photo from the essay shows the Jeffery brothers creating the large dam on the eastern side of CI, using a scoop, c. 1930.

16.01.2022 Phillip Island Nature Parks are currently running an online survey to gauge expectations and experiences of people associated in some way with their attractions and activities, such as the Penguin Parade and the other paid attractions (including Churchill Island), Research, Education, conservation, etc. You can do the survey by following the link in their post shared here.

14.01.2022 A great effort by CI curator Samantha Happe and the team for their big efforts uploading the records, images and information onto the Victorian Collections online catalogiong program for over 1200 items from the CI collection this year! This effort has been short-listed for the Vic Collections award this year. The judges look at the quantity and quality of images and information to make their final selection. FOCIS member David Maunders has been contributing by researching ex...tra information on specific entries. The VC online cataloguing of the CI collection was commenced by FOCIS member Christine Grayden when she was CI curator and has been contributed to by various FOCIS members over the years. The lockdown period saw Sam scanning and uploading from home and other Phillip Island Nature Parks staff deployed to also assist. We will know the result on December 8 when the ceremony will be held online. You can view the uploaded collection at: victoriancollections.net.au Since today, November 11 is Remembrance day we share an image of Harry Jenkins (at right with friends) who owned CI from 1936-1963, and who served in the Boer War and WW1. Many of his son Ted's friends served in WW2. See more

10.01.2022 CI FARMERS' MARKET ON TODAY!! Saturday 7th November. In our first real sign of "normality", the famous market is on today 8 a.m. - 1p.m., so if you can manage it, get along and show all the stall holders your support while enjoying the beautiful views. It's a bit chilly today, so rug up, but we're sure it will be worth it!

09.01.2022 NAIDOC - In case you are not aware, this week is NAIDOC Week, when we particularly celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. The theme this year is "Always was, always will be" ATSI land. The draft PI Millowl Wildlife Management Plan refers to the possibility of using indigenous cultural practices as a management tool. If you would like to learn more about joint management practices which enable mutual learning and ATSI people to practice culture on their Country, you can view videos and discussions here: https://www.vic.gov.au/connecting-country Photo shows Royal Botanic Gardens Aboriginal guide Kalkani Choolburra on one of the videos explaining native plant uses.

06.01.2022 Here's a wonderful photo taken recently by Phillip Island local Grazyna of a Churchill Island local - one of the Highland Cattle fold calves. Lovely portrait! Highland Cattle must have the best temperaments of any breed of cattle.

05.01.2022 Did you know that Churchill Island has a direct link with Melbourne's Old Treasury Building? This popular museum was originally built to house Victoria's gold and money wealth after the initial gold rush. The builder was our own Samuel Amess, who owned Churchill Island from 1872, and whose son and then grandson owned it until 1929. The Old Treasury Building has combined with the History Council of Victoria and Monash University to present the "Making Public Histories" series.... The next one to be presented will be a free, open webinar titled: "Victoria's Native Vegetation: History, Heritage, Politics" on Monday 10th November starting at 5 p.m. until 6.30 p.m. Churchill Island is a classic example of how the vegetation has changed so radically, from Yallock Bullock cultural land practices to the first European garden in Victoria, land clearing for farming, and revegetation for tourism and biodiversity restoration. All are welcome to RSVP to attend the webinar by following this link: https://www.historycouncilvic.org.au/victorias_native_veget See more
