25.01.2022 Keith Bettany published one of his dad's sketches (Des Bettany) which is very appropriate today being the 'Fall of Singapore' 1942/02/15. Look carefully at the sketch. This is one of Keith's favourite paintings painted on a scrap about 6 x 4 inches. ... The more you look the more you see from the railway to Changi Airport, from white cliffs of Dover to Sydney Harbour Bridge. Des certainly packed it into this one. Spend some time looking at his dad's artwork. It captures more than words can say. https://changipowart.com/

25.01.2022 Bill Norways was a British POW who did sketches of his time on The Railway Bill spent more than a year in Singapore before being sent to help build the Thailand-Burma death railway. Most of the hundreds of British PoWs who built the line had been sent back to Singapore by February 1944. British military records show that Norways, who suffered bouts of dysentery, was too sick to leave his camp in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. But by April 1944 he was well enough to return to Singapore, where he remained until Japans defeat in August the following year.

24.01.2022 #OnThisDay at 8.15am in 1945 the Japanese city of Hiroshima became the first to be devastated by an atomic bomb. Three days later another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, and on 15 August 1945 Japan announced its surrender, ending the Second World War. Many Australians serving with the British Commonwealth Occupation Force visited Hiroshima, some collected mementos among the ruins as reminders of how daily life was interrupted by the searing heat of the blast. This melted glass ...mantel clock, on display in the Shrine Galleries, is one such example. We're proud to be involved in the commemorative and cultural program to honour the 75th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Watch the pre-recorded service on Saturday 15 August, 11.20am on our Facebook page to commemorate from home. #VictoriaRemembers #VPDay75 Image: Australian War Memorial REL27786.001.

19.01.2022 From a UK families of POWs site but a powerful memory Lest we Forget I remember the beautiful summer of 1945. I was 5 and my brother nearly 8 years old. We were playing and laughing together in the garden having fun. Suddenly my mother appeared at the door, leaning against the door frame, clutching a telegram in her hand, wailing and sobbing. The skies suddenly darkened, lightening and thunder crashed as torrential rain began to fall. I remember my heart... thumping, your Daddy is dead time and again as I screamed out God is Angry. At 80 years of age this memory is as clear as ever. I never saw my mother cry again until we visited my fathers grave at Kanchanaburi Cemetery, Thailand. She was 75 years old. She had at last allowed herself to grieve. Lest we Forget Keep the Candle Burning! See more

16.01.2022 This article written to mark the publication of a book by veteran prison camp medic Ken Adams some eight years ago... The long march had a punishing pointlessness about it that drove men to the brink of bedraggled despair. Wasted by disease and starvation, the ragged column of walking skeletons plodded on, hopelessly, towards apparent oblivion in the wilderness of central Thailand. After more than three years of brutal captivity that had reduced soldiers to slave labourers m...Continue reading

16.01.2022 Victory in the Pacific (VP) Day The Japanese ceasefire took effect on 15 August 1945, following the threat of invasion and Allied bombings. The official surrender ceremony, however, took place on 2 September 1945 on the deck of the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. While Victory in Europe was declared in May 1945, fighting in the Pacific region continued until August 1945.... Following the official surrender ceremony, a number of other surrender ceremonies were held at locations throughout the Pacific, including Cape Wom, at Wewak in northern New Guinea; Rabaul on New Britain; Bougainville; Kuching, Balikpapan, Jesselton (now Kota Kinabalu), and Sandakan in Borneo; Hong Kong; Timor; and Nauru. To mark Victory in the Pacific, the Australian Government gazetted a public holiday, declaring it Victory in the Pacific Day, or VP Day. Some other nations, such as Britain, the United Stated and New Zealand declared it Victory in Japan, or VJ Day. Australian involvement in the Pacific Australian troops engaged with Japan in Papua New Guinea, Malaya, Bougainville and New Britain. Australians are most well known for their efforts in the Pacific in the Papua New Guinea campaigns of 1942: Kokoda and Milne Bay. However, Australians also supported the Allied cause in the Pacific towards the latter half of the Second World War. In total, six Australian divisions, supported by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), were in action against the Japanese throughout the Pacific. In late 1944, the Australians took over former American bases in northern New Guinea, on Bougainville and on New Britain, with the aim of defeating the large number of Japanese forces that remained there. The Japanese, despite being cut off from their supply base at Rabaul, and often having to rely on their own resources for survival, refused to concede defeat. They continued to engage in long and costly battles with the Australians. In New Guinea, between November 1944 and August 1945, the 6th Division fought in the Aitape-Wewak region. On Bougainville, the Australian 3rd Division, together with troops from the 11th and 13th Brigades, conducted demanding patrols interspersed with some sharp fighting. Costly battles were fought at Slater's Knoll in March and April in 1945. Meanwhile, the 5th Division undertook difficult operations on the island of New Britain, pushing the Japanese back towards Rabaul. In 1945, Australian forces launched three military actions against Japanese-held Borneo, at Tarakan; Labuan-Brunei Bay; and Balikpapan. These were the biggest Australian campaigns of the Second World War. In these campaigns, more than 500 Australians died and more than 1,400 were wounded. We Will Remember Them Lest We Forget

14.01.2022 When we mark #VJDay75 in just two weeks time, we will celebrate the victory of our veterans and remember those who never came home. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission commemorates over 120,000 servicemen and women who fell in the Pacific and the Far East between December 1941 and the end of 1945. Below are just some of their cemeteries, which are immaculately maintained, ensuring that our fallen are #NeverForgotten.

12.01.2022 Our streets are quiet now, but on this day 75 years ago they were filled with celebration for the end of World War Two. With no public events for the anniversary, Nine News sat down with two veterans to tell us what the day means to them. #9News

12.01.2022 The Burma Railway Memorial at the Arboretum was constructed from original rails and sleepers, it commemorates the thousands of Prisoners of War who lost their lives constructing the infamous railway. #VJDay75

12.01.2022 On 28th August 1945 Liberator bombers flew low over Changi and let fly a stream of small sheets of paper. The war was defiantly over and a surrender had been signed. Artist: Des Bettany Prisoners of War, at Changi look up in wonder as a symbol of impending Allied victory flies over the camp in the form of a stylised Boeing B17 bomber. Interestingly, Des has remembered the rare early model with narrow fin and rudder, some of which were used by the RAF in the early years of the war.

07.01.2022 75 years ago today, we celebrated the greatest national effort in Australias history - the end of the Second World War. Out of a population of 7 million people, 1 million Australians put on our uniform and made the silent promise to give their lives for their country, if need be. Almost 40,000 gave their lives. Today we say thank you to those who served. They helped win a war, secure the peace, and along with so many more, saved humanity.... Their deeds will not be forgotten. In our time with our own struggles, we will draw strength from their example. [This photo was taken in Bourke Street, Melbourne on August 15, 1945 : Australian War Memorial.]

06.01.2022 In 2014, YB. Dato ' Zulkurnain (ADUN Sri Medan and also the Youth EXCO, Sports, Culture and Warisan Johor state at that time) has made an application for the State Government to make this PWD / JKR Berek has been restored for State and State Heritage. This project was approved by the Johor Minister at that time, His Excellency Dato ' Sri Haji Mohamed Khaled bin Nordin This is because, at the Berek compound there was a fierce war between British Army and Japanese Army on 20-22... January 1942 the end of the war (Battle Of Muar) which was recorded in the history of the country during the occupation of Japan. The event of massacre on the injured and helpless AUSTRALIAN & INDIAN ARMY during the Second World War, which made Parit Sulong famous especially in AUSTRALIA. Although the historic Bridge of Parit Sulong has been demolished in 1994, there are many other heritage buildings in Parit Sulong for example: Raden Cinema, Parit Sulong National School, Parit Sulong, etc. should be restored & attracted in Parit Sulong. Parit Sulong Gallery said well done on the initiative of YB Sri Medan. An infinite thank you to the Johor Heritage Foundation and Yong Peng District Council. Malaysia is generally new in this aspect of Conservation and Maintenance. We should realize that such effort is important to promote TRAVEL PRODUCTS and be a SUBJECT OF KNOWLEDGE. There are many other building buildings especially in JOHOR state that have a high history value. The existence of the NATIONAL HERITAGE ACT 2005 needs to be understood and obeyed by all parties directly or indirectly. The importance of (Conservation and Restoration of Historical Heritage Building) as YB's efforts should be exemplified for other areas to preserve and restore the treasure of building and architecture for the next generation's viewing. #rememberparitsulong

03.01.2022 We are not suggesting that anyone donates but this is an interesting idea to commemorate a life well lived The family of the late Captain Sir Tom Moore have extended an invitation to grow a legacy forest in his honour, uniting people in the UK and worldwide with a vision to create a brighter, greener future. In tribute to his life and his influence, Sir Tom's daughter Lucy Teixeira and her family are inviting people to come together to plant trees and grow a living legacy fo...rest in his name. Trees for Tom is a collaboration between ourselves and TreeSisters: women seeding change, and will allow people to plant trees both locally in the UK and in eight other countries around the world. What a fitting way to celebrate the life of someone as inspirational as Captain Sir Tom Moore, by creating woods and planting trees as a lasting legacy. We are hoping to raise enough money to fulfil the family’s wishes of planting a memorial woodland in Yorkshire in his memory. To donate to plant a tree in memory of Captain Sir Tom Moore, visit: http://www.woodlandtru.st/7FPKE

02.01.2022 The infamous Death Railway from Thailand to Burma was built more than 76 years ago by prisoners of war and slave labourers. Besides the Tamils, Chinese and Mala...ys, a large group of Sikhs from Malaya also worked on the construction of this railway. Their grueling role in the railways construction remains a little known story. These were some of the Sikhs who were assigned to the Death Railway.
