21.01.2022 TEMPERAMENT, CONCENTRATION + A BIG DOSE OF GAEKWAD COURAGE! Hailing from a family of cricketers, Anshuman Gaekwad's father, Datta and son Shatrunjay, both played first class cricket for Baroda. He made his Test debut against the West Indies January, 1975 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, going on to play 40 Tests for India. Nine years later Vs England in December 84’, he became one of the few Test cricketers to bow out of Test cricket at the same venue where it all began. ... What Anshuman lacked in elegance and finesse he made up with in temperament and raw courage. A precious commodity, particularly in a team sport where a hard object of 5.5 ounces is hurled down a length of just 22 yards at +150 kph, pre-helmut days! This came to the fore particularly against the intimidating pace battery of the West Indies. It is said, he made it into 'Team India' on this virtue alone. GUTS AND GLORY In the pre helmet, pre restrictions on bouncers era, Gaekwad's guts and glory reached a peak by 1975-76’ in the bloodbath in Jamaica Test match. Battered and bruised by a rhythmic Michael Holding (in particular) it was a kin to a modern day Bodyline series. In this match Gaekwad opened with Gavaskar and was on 81* N.O. when a delivery split his middle finger. Out of frustration, he made a inappropriate gesture at Holding which infuriated him. Holding bowled from around the wicket unleashing a thunderbolt that Gaekwad didn’t pick up puncturing his eardrum which hospitalised him, ending up in ICU for 48 hours. He underwent two surgeries and to this day he continues to have issues with his hearing. In addition to his fine temperament and courage he possessed terrific reserves of patience and concentration. PATIENCE AND CONCENTRATION There was no finer example of this than in the 2nd Test Vs Pakistan in Jalandhar in 1982-83’. India won the toss and elected to field, Pakistan posting 337 runs. India in reply got off to a rocky start. They lost early wickets but Gaekwad played with patience, concentration and grit to make his highest Test score 201 off 436 balls in 671 minutes, helping India to a 1st innings score of 374. Roger Binny the next highest scorer on 54. The match resulted in a draw but Gaekwad had now made a name for himself. At the time, it was then the slowest double-century in first-class cricket. He signed off on a high, with a scintillating hundred in his last first class match for Baroda, later becoming a selector 92’-96 and the national coach on two occasions taking over from Madan Lal in 97’-99 and again for short stint in 2000. Gaekwad, amassed 1,985 runs during his Test career at an average of 30.07 Relive India's top 10 defining moments and watch exclusive interviews and highlights come to life on your Smartphone, when you purchase the world's first interactive collectible sports book on India's Greatest Test Cricket Achievements. 14.01.2022 EKKY - THE GREATEST IN THE HISTORY OF TEST CRICKET? They say that statistics and averages, don’t lie. Eknath ‘Ekky' Solkar, remains Test cricket's most successful fielder based on the catches taken per matches played. ...Continue reading

11.01.2022 ALL HAIL 'THE COLONEL'. To put things in perspective Dilip ‘The Colonel’ Vengsarkar represented India at the top of his sport for 16 years. He played 116 matches for his country with only the following ‘Who’s Who’ list of Indian Test cricket legend’s representing their country more; Sunny Gavaskar, 125 matches, Kapil Dev 131, Anil Kumble 132, VVS Laxman 134, Rahul Dravid 164 and Sachin Tendulkar 200 Test matches, the all time highest in Test cricket. ... Vengsarkar remained the plinth of the Indian middle-order for a decade and a half. A superb player of the cover drive and between mid-on and mid-wicket, he was the picture of elegance at the crease. To watch Vengsarkar at his best meant watching someone blessed with such talent that he made batting look easy! Even if that was against the might of a full West Indian pace battery featuring the likes of, Marshall, Roberts and Holding. Such was his talent, that when he was 'on song' he would score hundreds on wickets with ease that saw the rest of his team struggle to survive. For a large part of the 80’s, Dilip was without doubt the best Indian batsman and in fact, was the world’s best batsman. Contemplate this? To be the world’s best in the mid 1980s (83’- 87’) meant surpassing the feats of: Allan Border, Gordon Greenidge, Javed Miandad, Viv Richards, David Gower, Martin Crowe, and Gavaskar. The view has always been held overseas that the true test of batsmanship is making runs in England. Conditions can literally change in a heartbeat with the passing of an overhead cloud and where pitches can vary so much in character. Although his three 100's at Lord’s are still remembered to this day and he has the unique distinction of being the first overseas batsman to score 3 consecutive hundreds at Lord’s, perhaps his best innings in England were 61 and 102 not out at Headingley in 86', when the conditions rendered batting almost impossible. Former Indian Test cricketer, @Yajurvindra Singh Bilkha described Dilip as, ‘The King of Lords’. However, he went on to say, ‘I saw Dilip’s first 100. However, his best knock in Test cricket was the hundred at Headingly'. Dilip's highest score he made was Vs Sri Lanka in 1987 on a minefield at Cuttack. He retired with 6,868 Test runs and 17 centuries to his name, epitomising his immense class. Is Dilip Vengsarkar worthy of making India’s all time best XI Test cricketers? 10.01.2022 VENKAT - AN ERA OF SPIN, ACCURACY & CONTROL As a talented 19-year-old, Srinivas Venkataraghavan made his Test debut Vs New Zealand in 1965. More than 18 years later 'Venkat’ exited Test cricket in 1983. Such was his Test cricket longevity, that only India's Test cricket legends, Sachin Tendulkar (24 years) and Lala Amarnath (19 years) would serve their country longer. A tall rangy off-spinner he tested batsmen’s technique and temperament, causing concern to those facing hi...Continue reading

01.01.2022 THE TEST OF HIS LIFE! Despite knowing he had been diagnosed with cancer the brilliant left handed Yuvraj Singh was unbeaten on 57* when he let his knees buckle beneath him letting out a gladiatorial roar after beating Australia in the quarter final of the 2011 World Cup. The world saw first hand that this man did not give up or give in easily. Immediately following winning the 2011 World Cup the news broke that ‘Yuvi’ had been battling cancer and was heading to the US to b...egin chemotherapy treatment. Hundreds of millions prayed for his well-being and for a full recovery. With his trademark determination that enabled Yuvraj to be awarded, 'the player of the tournament' in the 2011 World Cup, he fought and beat the disease. He said this of the experience, that it made him value life, enjoy the world on offer, without fear of failure or his future any longer. Armed with a new set of life lessons and a new lease of life, Yuvi set about regaining a place back in Team India. And return he did! In his first Test match in 12 months in Ahmedabad, November 2012, he made an impact scoring 74 runs and in doing so, helped India to amass a total of 521 /8 (dec) in their 1st innings to inflict defeat on England. This would be India’s only Test match victory during England’s 2012 tour of India with England winning the 4 match series 2:1. By the end the series, Yuvraj would play his last Test in a sustained career of 40 Test matches spanning nine years. It is worth noting that he loved scoring big in Test matches against Pakistan, scoring 169 in Bangalore in 2007, 122 in Karachi in 2006 and 122 in Lahore in 2004, his maiden Test century. Although his Test career finished in 2012, it didn’t prevent Yuvraj from continuing to pursue his ODI and T/20 career. Not only that, he commanded top dollars at the IPL auctions, picking up multi million dollar contracts in 2014 to RCB, in 2015 to Delhi Daredevils and in 2016 to Sunrisers Hyderabad.
