21.01.2022 Friday Film Recommendation: Pick of the Litter This adorable documentary follows the lives of five Labrador puppies as they go through the rigorous training process to become guide dogs for the visually impaired. Each experience triumphs and failures, and not everyone is going to make the cut. This documentary is only 81 minutes long and the scenes of street training are particularly exciting as the dogs must learn to obey orders and know when to ignore commands for their ...owners' safety. It’s a heart-warming documentary that will make you smile. A definite recommendation for all the dog lovers out there and anyone else that needs a pick-me-up at the end of a hard week. 06.01.2022 Friday Film Recommendation: Brooklyn Brooklyn, based on the novel by Colm Toibin follows young Irish émigré Eilis Lacey, portrayed beautifully by Siaorse Ronan. Eilis lives in a small town in Ireland circa early 1950s until she is sponsored by an American priest to emigrate and work in New York. At first, she struggles, feeling lonely and alienated. The movie moves through her initial hesitance in beautifully shot and designed sequences where she eventually finds friendshi...p, budding romance with Italian-American Tony and a sense of purpose in her new life. When tragedy calls her back to Ireland, Eilis struggles with homesickness and the choice between home and her new life in Brooklyn. These choices are made harder by the kind and gentle romantic attentions of handsome local fellow Jim. With gorgeous sets, costumes and locations and exquisite acting, Brooklyn is an understated and quiet movie about familial obligations, homesickness and the pursuit of a meaningful life.

04.01.2022 These two books have a lot in common Tidelands by Phillipa Gregory & Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell A strong female character of unusual quality, both herbalists, slightly out of place in her time, motherhood, grief and love. Incredible research in both books takes you straight to their time and setting, the first set during the English Civil War, the other, despite the title is the story of Shakespeare's wife Agnes, although he is never mentioned by name.... You will want to savour every word. Reserve a copy, using your membership and pin number https://swlc.ent.sirsidynix.net.au//darda/search/results/
