22.01.2022 **PLEASE SHARE** Im trying to locate my Great Uncle Horace Victor McGuinnesss Memorial Plaque, also known as a Dead Mans Penny, please refer to the photo. ...It was issued to my Great Grandfather, Thomas McGuinness, on the 18th of July 1922. Horace was one of 3 brothers who served in WWI. Sadly he and my Great Uncle Clarence were both Killed In Action. My Grandfather, Lawrence McGuinness, was injured and returned home from the war. Neither my sister nor I knew that this plaque existed until July this year when I stumbled across this photo of it on Flickr. I have contacted the person who posted the photo on Flickr. They saw it listed on Ebay in 2013. Sadly they did not buy it nor do they have a link to who had listed it for sale. Thankfully their hobby is to preserve memories of our soldiers for family members like me. We do not know for sure who in the family inherited Horaces Memorial Plaque Thomas McGuinness had 6 other children. What we do know is that someone listed it for sale on eBay and someone bought it. We would dearly love to find the new owner of Horaces Plaque and hopefully they are willing to sell it to me. See more

It provides details of the experience your 27th family member and his mates had when they enlisted, trained and went away to fight. You can find it at Dymocks in Burnside or by order from the publisher (Australian Scholarly Publishing).http://www.scholarly.info/book/365/

04.01.2022 The 27th battalion fought in the Battle of Pozieres 23 July 7 August 1916. Pozires, a small village in the Somme valley in France, was the scene of bitter and costly fighting for Australian soldiers. On the 4th August 1916, the 27th Battalion as part of the 2nd Australian Division attacked to capture the highest vantage point in Pozieres, an old 17th century windmill. They advanced, captured and held it in the face of unrelenting artillery fire and counter attacks. The Batt...alion suffered heavily from retaliatory bombardments and over a hundred died. The casualties of the entire 2nd division were nearly seven thousand. Alfred William BOWLEY (pictured) from Unley was one soldier from the 27th battalion who fought and died in this battle. Are you related to him or to any other soldier in the 27th originally from the Unley area? If so, the City of Unley is interested in hearing from you.
