What do you have to say now Mark Buttler? ...Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton was interviewed by the ABCs Rafael Epstein yesterday and he confirmed that senior police were aware that I was in a relationship with a serving police officer. It wasnt a secret, a secret relationship or anything, Chief Commissioner Ashton said. Rafael discovered this with one simple question and Anthony Dowsley who sits beside Mark Buttler at the Herald Sun knew about my relationship for three years. Mark Buttler it is time for you and the Herald Sun to admit that you GOT IT WRONG! The full transcript of the ABC interview: Rafael Epstein: The Head of the Drug Squad clearly has been in a relationship. Well thats the allegation on the front page of the paper. Been in a relationship with the owner of the Inflation Nightclub for some time, is that an Issue? Graham Ashton: Well, its not an issue because were aware of it and I know its just recently reported in the media but that was an association if you like that relationship thats weve been have been aware of and if theres any potential for conflict of interest there its managed by crime command and the most important thing is that its know about, it wasnt a secret, a secret relationship or anything Rafael Epstein: Is it not problematic if hes the head of the Drug Squad and theres a lot of Police claims about drug dealing at that nightclub, isnt that inherently a problem Graham Ashton: Well people are entitled to have relationships and provided that we can manage the conflict of interest that should arise with that relationship you know then we do that and we havent had any issues that we do that have ever been come up in the relationship to that conflict being actualized its you know its something that has always been successfully managed and as I say its hasnt really been a secret that that relationship has existed for us Rafael Epstein: Was there a complaint lodged about that relationship? There was reporting of some conflict of interest that was going to be investigated or was there not a complaint? Graham Ashton: Im not aware of there being a complaint no. Mark, your story was on Page 1. The Chief Commissioner Ashton made his comments yesterday, yet you have failed to issue a correction with equal prominence today. Also, Mark, your follow-up story to your Page 1 article reported that I CLAIMED that senior police knew about the relationship but that you were unable to confirm it yourself (even though the reporter who sits next to you knew about it and used to ask how my partner was all the time). You used the word CLAIMED when referring to my comments, but you published ANONYMOUS police statements as fact. Your use of the word CLAIMED is looking more offensive by the day Mark. The Herald Suns style guide, which advises journalists about why words to use and be wary of, recommends against the use of the word CLAIMED because it implies that the journalist does not believe the speaker. It recommends the word SAID instead. Why did you use the word CLAIMED Mark? Mark, if you ever write on the nightclub industry again, keep in mind that nightclubs make money from alcohol sales and entry fees. People who take drugs dont buy alcohol. This is the reason we have zero tolerance to drug use in our venues. Finally, and importantly, I would like to thank the Chief Commissioner for setting the record straight.
