19.01.2022 My speech this week honouring Kokoda veteran Bill Grayden AM on his 100th birthday, with Bill present in the Parliament. Bill is one of our treasured Australian... legends, who served throughout WW2 and defended Australia in the perilous Kokoda campaign of 1942. He went on to serve 4.5 years in the Federal Parliament and 39.5 years in the Parliament of Western Australia. A remarkable history of service to our state and to our nation. We thank and honour Bill for his service and we wish him a Happy 100th Birthday. 2/16th Battalion - AIF Association 16th Battalion AIF 16th Battalion, The Royal Western Australia Regiment RSLWA See more

16.01.2022 #OTD Battle of Abuari On the 28th of August 1942, Australians of the 53rd and 2/16th Battalions fought against the Japanese flanking attack on Isurava at Ab...urai. Abuari was a small village in the Owen Stanley mountains in Papua that stood on a narrow track that left the Kokoda Trail at Alola. When the Japanese advance along the Kokoda Trail was held at Isurava in the last days of August 1942, they sought to outflank this position via Abuari. On 28 August troops from both the 53rd and 2/16th Battalions pushed forward along the track to Abuari to stop the Japanese. On 29 August A and B Companies of the 2/16th were unsuccessful in their attempts to force the Japanese from Abuari and D Company of the 53rd embarked upon an outflanking move. Rough country prevented the company making much progress and the companies of the 2/16th renewed their frontal assaults on the morning of 30 August, again without success. By midday the Japanese were infiltrating the area between the Australians and the junction with Kokoda Trail at Alola. Late in the afternoon the Australians were ordered to withdraw back to Alola. 13.01.2022 A BEAUTIFUL STORY I FOUND : Our 14-year-old dog Abbey died last month. The day after she passed away my 4-year-old daughter Meredith was crying and talking abou...t how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so, and she dictated these words: Dear God, Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her. Love, Meredith We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had. Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note: Dear Meredith, Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help and I recognized her right away. Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by. Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I'm easy to find. I am wherever there is love. Love, God Don't say you're too busy to Share this. Just go ahead and do it You will all be happy to know this wonderfull story is 100% true. Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind.

12.01.2022 This day in history-11 September 1914. The Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force lands at Rabaul. The Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary F...orce landed at Rabaul and went into action at Bitapaka. This was the only major New Guinea action of the First World War. The Bitapaka road. The first objective of the New Guinea expedition was the German wireless station at Bitapaka, a few miles inland from Blanche Bay, which at the outbreak of war was still in the course of construction, but was hurriedly finished and ready for use. When the Australians entered Blanche Bay, landing parties were at once despatched to seize the station. The road to the wireless station (shown in photograph) was entrenched by the Germans and held with native levies, a brush occurred between these and the naval brigade, in which two Australian officers and four men were killed while fighting, the first Australians to be killed in action in the First World War. When the wireless station, which the Germans had deserted, was occupied, it was found that the mast had been destroyed. Read more: http://kokodahistorical.com.au/history/an-mef

05.01.2022 Our Mission: Bring all Collins Class submarine maintenance to WA. It would result in more than 3000 local jobs and over $8 billion into WA’s economy.

04.01.2022 We would love to see you on Sunday 26 July at our History Room visit.Pease contact 0417985400 for details.

04.01.2022 Hello everyone We, at 2/16 Battalion Association hope you are all staying safe, keeping your distance and if isolating (like all of us) staying active and catching up on all those things that need to be done that you had just not got around to! As you would probably realise, a lot of our functions have been cancelled or temporarily put on hold.... Unfortunately, all our celebrations for the 80th year since formation of unit have been cancelled but maybe in June Pigeon Post we can revisit earlier activities. Anzac Day is a big loss but maybe it will be organised for all to stand at the end of their drive whilst Last Post is either broadcast or played locally. There is also a call for Pipers to play a lament in honour of the fallen. We would love to hear your thoughts or reports. The Brig. Potts Oration planned for July 17 is still pencilled in but more of that as time goes by. Please all stay safe and why not pick up your phone and call someone you know who may need a chat.
