19.01.2022 Please Share I often see posts about Mental Health,Depression and Bullying to raise awareness which is great. What I haven't notice is many articles about Suicide awareness which can be the unfortunate result for for some people who experience Mental Health issues,Depression and Bullying. The statistics on suicide surprised me, over 3000 people a year in Australia take their own life. That's roughly 8 a day or 1 every 3 hours. The figure that surprised me the most was the fa...ct that 75% of these were male. After recently completing ASIST training(Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) I learnt that suicide is a hard topic to discuss.An ever harder thing to do is ask someone,"Are you thinking about suicide?". I think the fear of the answer "Yes" is what would stop most people. Asking the question apparently will not 'put the idea into someone's head'. Some people who are thinking about suicide reach out for help by their behaviour, being withdrawn, loss of interest in things they use to love or dangerous behaviour. Some can be phrases they use such as,"I just can't take it anymore" or "No one can do anything to help me now." It could be signs such as lack of interest in appearance or disturbed sleep or feelings of being angrier than normal or sad and hopelessness. There are plenty of support networks out there if you are concerned for yourself or a friend or family member.For immediate help you can call Lifeline on 13 11 14 which is a 24 hour service. I am going to ask you to like and share, but also to step up and enquire about the ASIST training, the life you save could be someone close to you.
