24.01.2022 Did you know that after food and water, blankets continue to be the most sought after product for homeless services? But it’s not just people sleeping rough who need warm blankets we get plenty of requests from families and individuals who may be couch surfing, staying in their car, or from those who are just struggling to make ends meet. We pride ourselves on giving with dignity, and for several years have partnered with Creswick Woollen Mills to provide top quality blank...ets to #keepourcommunitywarm. This month, they’re supporting us further and have pledged to donate one wool blanket for every online sale of an Alpaca quilt or Woollen blanket within their homeware range. Do some good while you shop! 24.01.2022 We’ve had another busy weekend with Melbourne Ice delivering our ICEOLATION Care Packs to people doing it tough, including ex-army vet Ivan, who has ongoing health issues after a stroke 14 years ago. While recovering from his stroke in hospital, Ivan’s marriage ended and after being discharged he found himself living in a boarding house for the next decade. He says he lost everything, and having permanent nerve damage and an injured spine and knee, is unable to work. The 59-y...ear-old pensioner says the government support he receives helps him, but after paying rent and bills, is not enough. Some weeks he just scrapes by. Ivan says he’s found COVID-19 extremely hard. With all the dangers of coronavirus in the community, plus his health issues, food insecurity is the last thing people like Ivan should worry about. Like other recipients, Ivan says he is thankful for the food parcels, because it means he doesn’t have to worry about going hungry for the week. Unfortunately with the pandemic still gripping Melbourne, we’ve had people across all demographics and cultures reaching out and asking for help for the first time. 22.01.2022 How do you stay home if you don’t have one? For around one in every 200 Australians currently crashing on couches , staying in boarding houses or, in the most extreme cases, sleeping rough on the street or in improvised dwellings like their , these stay-at-home and social distancing measures are impossible. With limited access to hygiene, reduced access to day centres, closure of public toilets and other measures such as services that provide food to people experienci...ng homelessness being impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, they are at risk of hunger and food insecurity and are more likely to become seriously ill. While we provide emergency relief to those in need, there’s nothing we want more than to see the people we serve secure a safe place to call home. That starts with more social housing being available. This #HomelessnessWeek help us tackle #homelessness and join the Everybody’s Home campaign: www.everybodyshome.com.au #HW2020 #HomelessnessWeek2020 #HomelessnessAwareness #BuildMoreSocialHousing #EverybodysHome #keepourcommunitywarm See more

22.01.2022 Even before the pandemic gripped Melbourne, Jim was already struggling to get a job. In what seems like a lifetime ago, the 60 year-old was working as a banker. Unhappy in his role, he decided to leave his job, eager for the next opportunity. But then the GFC hit and there weren’t any jobs available. He has been unemployed since I’ve been on [Job Seeker] for years but it’s pretty hard when you’ve gone from one employment agency to another. It’s like start again.... Just applying for another 40 jobs you’re not going to get, it’s soul destroying and you just spiral down. Being mature-aged, Jim’s prospects of gaining employment is slim. I can’t compete with the younger people he tells us. To add to his stress, Jim doesn’t have any family that can help support him. After a fall out with his sister years ago, Jim ended up homeless. He spent a few nights on the streets before ended up in a motel, where he would live for a significant period of his life. If you’re by yourself and you’re unemployed, it’s very hard to get approved by the real estate. Jim now lives in a public housing commission, but with no relatives to connect with, COVID-19 has especially been hard for him. Apart from some neighbours in the building, Jim says he doesn’t talk to many people, so he looks forward to chatting with our volunteers when they drop the ICEOLATION Care Packs. Jim is just one of many people we serve who experience social isolation. His story reminds us that while the food we’re able to provide helps, a one-on-one connection is just as important. It’s why our volunteers give up their weekends every week, to check in with those who might not have anyone to talk to. Who do you know lives alone, or doesn’t have any family? A colleague, a friend, a neighbour? Help us tackle loneliness and send some love to them! Want to know more about our ICEOLATION Program? 21.01.2022 While the is at a standstill during COVID-19 season, #homelessness isn’t. They’re turning to us for help some for the first time. That’s why we need your support more than ever. 20.01.2022 Important message from our Co-Founder & President: When we started 300 Blankets, I never imagined it growing and accomplishing as much as it has nine years later. I remember when we received our first delivery of blankets, my house was also our store room and I had to live with climbing over boxes to go in and out of my room. Our priority has always been focused on our friends on the street. Nearly a decade on, I am so proud and honoured to have been a part of everything 3...00 Blankets has achieved from becoming one of Victoria’s largest distributors of blankets, to serving thousands in our community through Outreach, Soul Kitchen and Ice-olation and bringing them hope and relief. There were so many bittersweet nights after beautiful chats, heartful hugs and giving out all of the blankets we had on us, that I went home in tears because I wished I could do more. Volunteering on the front line is so important, and it is at the heart of why we exist. And it is because of this ethos that I will be stepping down from my role as President of 300 Blankets. Early this year, my wife Joy and I were blessed with our beautiful baby Sophie. Being a father is the most precious role I have ever undertaken and I am loving every moment of it. What I thought would be a tough decision was actually one of the easiest. 300 Blankets does not belong to any one person but the community we serve. It would be unfair for both my family and 300 Blankets if I was to try to divide my time and attention. I see the responsibility of the President as a very active role and the person bestowed this role must be on the front line to love and care for people. I have complete faith that the next President, Peter Royce, will take this new responsibility with honour and humility. I am also thrilled that Susan Hendra has accepted the role as Vice President and have no doubt 300 Blankets will thrive under their leadership. And while I may not be the President anymore, I will continue to be on the board and volunteer, because I will always want to help keep our community warm. 18.01.2022 After 15 weeks of running our ICEOLATION Care Packages Program, we’ve delivered a whopping 500 Care Packs to individuals and families impacted by COVID-19. They include people who may have lost their job recently and are struggling financially, people couch surfing or are in crisis accomodation, people who can’t work due to injury or other circumstances, families who are going without basic staples and fresh fruit, and elderly people who can’t risk their health by going out i...n public, or who simply can’t go grocery shopping due to mobility issues. Delivered safely with plenty of by our volunteers, the Care Packs they receive not only puts food on their table, but also reminds them that they are cared for and have not been forgotten. This incredible effort has only been possible because of YOUR ongoing support. Shout out to Melbourne Ice and our volunteers for also helping us reach this milestone. Thank you all for making a positive impact on so many lives. Join our fight against food insecurity head to www.300blankets.org.au for more info.

18.01.2022 With strict movement rules in place in Victoria, some of our street friends say they can’t even rely on their last resort bin diving for food anymore. But in addition to many food relief programs being affected by COVID-19, panic buying has engendered shortages of staples at local shops, leaving not only people who are experiencing homelessness at risk of hunger, but also those like struggling individuals and families and the elderly who are vulnerable to face food insecurity. With your help, we can make sure that they don’t have to go without food. 16.01.2022 100 ACTS OF SERVICE: It’s been nearly 100 years since Rotary Clubs started in Australia, and to kick off the year-long celebrations Rotary Club of Yarraville has committed to doing 100 acts of service 100 times! 16.01.2022 From the day we were forced to suspend our #Outreach Program for the second time because of Victoria’s second wave, we have been counting the days until we could return to the streets to help those still sleeping rough. So with restrictions finally eased and Melbourne seemingly covid-free for the past three weeks, we ventured out to see who we would come across this week. While most are lucky to have accomodation in hotels and motels, some aren’t so fortunate. And with socia...l distancing and keeping to yourself the norm, unfortunately it also means that our streets friends are more alone than ever. They don’t get help, and rarely a smile, or someone saying hello to them. For the people we met, had a chat with and provided food and material aid, we are glad that we can give them some comfort during this challenging time. #togetherwecan #keepourcommunitywarm #300blankets #communityoutreach #homelessness #homelessnessawareness #socialisolation #socialdistancing #melbourne #covid_19

15.01.2022 This week is Include a Charity Week! It's a week to celebrate charities and raise awareness of the different ways you can include them into your life. Other than volunteering and the odd donation, did you know that one of the most impactful ways of including a charity in your life is by leaving a gift in your will? The best legacy you can leave is one that has a lasting impact, and this is an amazing way of helping people at risk or experiencing homelessness, even afte...r you’re gone. To find out more about how to leave your mark during #IncludeACharityWeek, send us an email [email protected] or head to www.300blankets.org.au #CharityWeek #IncludeACharity #charity #300Blankets #keepourcommunitywarm #communityoutreach #homelessness #donate #donation #charitydonation #donatetocharity #everybitcounts #supportlocal

14.01.2022 We can only imagine how tough it may be for those in lockdown, who don’t have access to the most basic necessities. With face masks mandatory in Victoria, disposable ones are in high demand and can not only be costly for those who are just scraping through, but may also be hard to get. With a little help from our volunteers and supporters like Sue-Lee’s mum in this pic (and dad) who have taken to their sewing machine to make reusable masks, we’re able to provide them to some of the most vulnerable people in our community! #keepourcommunitysafe #keepourcommunitywarm #reusablemask #masks #safety #covid19

12.01.2022 CHARLIE’S CHALLENGE: We’re all counting the days until Stage 4 restrictions are eased again in Melbourne, but no one is keener than seven-year-old Charlie Ray, who is riding his scooter around his local estate to raise money for us to help people in need. The Lakeside Scout Group Joey Scout is seeing how far he can go this month and is hoping it won’t be long until he can venture more than 5km from his house and explore interesting places. We’re so inspired by Charlie’s... Scootember Challenge so a shout out is definitely due here thanks for choosing to support us and our mission Charlie, and happy riding! 12.01.2022 From the archives: can you guess which year this photo was from? It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come after nearly a decade of keeping our community warm. What started as two friends fundraising to buy 300 blankets to distribute to our friends on the street, has grown to becoming one of the largest suppliers of blankets to people experiencing or at risk of homelessness in Victoria, as well as serving thousands in our community through our Outreach, Soul Kitchen and ICEOL...ATION Programs. And we’ve got more exciting news about what’s coming up... so watch this space! #fbf #flashbackfriday #300blankets #charity #melbourne #victoria #keepourcommunitywarm #communityoutreach #community #outreach #soulkitchen #soulkitchenbraybrook #soulkitchenpreston #soupkitchen #iceolation #homelessness #homelessnessawareness

12.01.2022 If you’ve known about #300Blankets for a while, chances are you’ve met our mama bear Susan Hendra! Since joining 300 Blankets, Susan has been on the frontline as an untiringly dedicated leader and contributor to our charity. From being an Outreach Leader to Soul Kitchen Braybrook Manager and Ice-olation Program Manager, Susan brings a generosity of spirit to all our Programs and is recognised by our friends and volunteers alike, as a genuinely wonderful person and inspirin...g leader. And now, we’re so excited to have Susan take up the role of our Vice President! We know that with Susan taking on this role, the positive impact we have on our community will continue to grow and flourish as we continue to bring the warmth of friendship to our community and touch many hearts. 12.01.2022 R U OK? It’s conversation that can change a life, especially during what has been one of the toughest year some of us has lived through. Nobody is immune to feeling the struggles of life, and some more than others. Having a meaningful conversation can make a big difference and can even be life-saving. Everyday is a good day to ask R U OK, but especially today, on R U OK Day, please check in on friends, family, colleagues, neighbours, your local barista, anyone and every...one and spread a little love in the world. 08.01.2022 It’s World Humanitarian Day and we’re giving another shout out to the #RealLifeHeroes who have committed their lives to others. 08.01.2022 Living alone can take a toll, even if you have a pet or in Francine’s case, two dogs. A former nurse and teacher, she never thought she would be in need, but after undergoing brain surgery last year, Francine is still recovering, and struggles to do simple tasks. Apart from her case worker, she says that she doesn’t see anyone else except our volunteers. With every delivery made to her, she tells us how grateful she is not only for receiving much needed food to help her g...et through the week, but also for being able to spend some time and catching up people who genuinely care about her. Now she’s put it in writing and we’re again reminded of the positive impact our team has on the community. Thank YOU for your ongoing support in keeping our ICEOLATION program running! 07.01.2022 Just in case no one else told you lately It’s okay to cry. Crying is a natural response as laughter, so let it out.... Nobody is perfect; We’re all just making life up as we go! Without mistakes we have nothing to grow from. And finally, you are NOT alone. There are literally billions of people on this planet, and though we may sometimes feel we are the only one carrying the burden in life we are not. 06.01.2022 Despite living in a digital world, many people in our community still don’t have access to a smart phone or a computer and find it difficult to stay connected, especially during lockdown. Some may also not have any family or friends to talk to. Each week our volunteers travel across Melbourne to deliver essential food parcels to families and individuals in need. 06.01.2022 This has been a year like no other, but we are so thankful to be able to end the year with a small Soul Kitchen Christmas dinner together! How can it be a family Christmas dinner without old photos and new friendships? Our dear friend Dorothy (88 years young) kindly shared stories and brought along a photo from when she was 8! Friends who had only met a few weeks ago, came together. Guests are inquiring how they can become volunteers! It was a beautiful night. ... We want to thank all of the volunteers who have generously given time with us. We also want to give a special thank you to Braybrook Community Hub and the City of Maribyrnong for your continued support of Soul Kitchen and Neuma Church and Woolworths Braybrook for providing gifts for all of our guests. We are already looking forward to our next Soul Kitchen night in 2021!

05.01.2022 Thank you Westpac for your generous support. Your contribution helps fund our volunteer programs providing care for people at risk or are experiencing homelessness in Melbourne.

05.01.2022 At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, nonna Rosa lost her cousin to the deadly virus. Rosa’s elderly hubby also has health problems, so with the ‘rona still lurking around, the 88-year-old says she is terrified to go out. While self-isolating, they rely on their daughter to check in and services like our ICEOLATION Care Package program to help them get through the week. Rosa is one of the lucky ones to have someone that could help out here and there, but many vulnerable V...ictorians aren’t so lucky. Without anyone to do their grocery shopping for them, some are forced to risk their health when going to the shops, or go without food. Others simply can’t afford to buy food. This season has been tough enough, and the last thing people in our community should be worrying about is food insecurity. We’ve been hearing from people across all demographics and cultures being impacted like never before, and are working hard to ensure our most vulnerable are supported during these difficult times. We’re proud to have a dedicated team of volunteers delivering food parcels packed with basic staples like eggs, milk, fresh fruit and meat every week to people like Rosa, who needs to stay at home to stay safe. But we need your help to keep the program running. 04.01.2022 This is Van. Van is a #legend A hospital worker , Van can’t help but take care of others even when she’s not in the , and always makes sure our volunteers are happy and well fed (with food she either cooked or bought herself). But most importantly, Van does everything in her power to make sure that our clients receive the best care from us as possible. From preparing a variety of tasty, hearty meals for #SoulKitchen (before COVID-19 forced us to suspend th...e service), to working with staff at the supermarket to hand-pick what items go into our ICEOLATION packs each week and coordinating the team, Van is truly an all-rounder. We wouldn’t be where we are without her so from the bottom of all our hearts, massive thanks to Van and her platinum ! #appreciationpost #volunteerappreciation #volunteer #keepourcommunitywarm #soupkitchen #carepackage #community #communityoutreach See more

03.01.2022 Imagine if one of your loved ones became homeless. Wouldn’t you want them to have a stable place to get their life back on track; to cook for their kids, to sleep in peace, to be safe from violence and to stay healthy? This Homelessness Week, we along with dozens of other organisations are calling for governments to support thousands of people experiencing homelessness around Australia. That support starts with social housing investment. We need to build enough housing to ensure all Victorians have a home. #HW2020 #BuildMoreSocialHousing #keepourcommunitywarm

03.01.2022 Armed with plenty of PPE our volunteers continue to provide vital support to vulnerable Victorians by delivering them food parcels through our ICEOLATION Care Package program. And while we’ve had to limit face-to-face contact with recipients, we’re stoked we can still share the love with each other this week Spring came early for some of our volunteers, who received some beautiful blooms from a donee. 02.01.2022 38 weeks later, Soul Kitchen Braybrook is back! Before the lockdowns, our volunteers were preparing and sharing hearty three-course meals with our guests. Each week, we’d hear words of gratitude from them. And not just because of the food, but because of the community that we’ve built with them. Whether it’s playing Uno with the children, or catching up with the guests, the words I’ve been looking forward to this all week has echoed through many. After months of planni...ng, and working with the council and our friends at Braybrook Community Hub, we were last night finally able to re-open, and what a night it was! Booked to capacity, we caught up with new and familiar guests who enjoyed some rigatoni saltati served with green salad, and vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate topping for dessert. And while Soul Kitchen looks a bit different, the warmth, friendship and community hasn’t changed. Want to know more about our programs? Head to www.300blankets.org.au or send us an email at [email protected] #SoulKitchenBraybrook #SoulKitchen #soupkitchen #heartymeals #community #communityoutreach #keepourcommunitywarm

02.01.2022 When we first launched the ICEOLATION Care Package delivery program with Melbourne Ice 28 weeks ago, we had a goal of 300 packs to deliver during the lockdown period. But as the weeks grew by and the number of individuals and families needing help increased, so too did our conviction to continue a much needed service. And that goal moved from 300 to 500, to 750, to 1000 and counting! Over the weekend, with the help of our volunteers, corporate partners and your donations, we ...reached the 1000 milestone! That’s 1000 bags loaded with fresh food given out to vulnerable Victorians struggling to make ends meet during an already extremely tough season. They’re individuals and families who have lost their source of income many on the brink of homelessness for the first time ever, disabled and elderly people who can’t go to the shops because of their health, and even international students who are stranded here and don’t receive any support. Thank you to everyone involved, and to all of you for keeping us going. 01.01.2022 Earlier this week we announced that our President Warren Tu is stepping down from his role at 300 Blankets. Incoming President Peter Royce has a few words to say about Warren and the future of our organisation: To our friends, volunteers, donors, partners and supporters, I wish to say that I am honoured to take on the role of President at 300 Blankets. I can’t thank Warren enough for the unwavering dedication, drive and heart that he has brought to 300 Blankets since he co-...founded the charity in 2012. He has been an inspiration to myself and so many others and I know that he will remain involved with 300 Blankets into the future. I am grateful to Warren and our team for giving me this incredible opportunity. It’s extraordinary to think how much my volunteering and involvement with homelessness and our community has become a part of my life. Along the way I have had the privilege of meeting many extraordinary people in our Programs; our friends on the streets in Outreach, at Soul Kitchen, or as part of our Ice-olation Program deliveries; and of course none of these interactions would have been possible without our supporters and incredible volunteers. I have had many unforgettable interactions and experiences and these experiences have changed and shaped the way I value the concept of ‘family’ and the values that guide me forward. Behind my love for our friends, our charity and what we do, I am driven always by wanting to be there for people in their time of need sometimes their greatest need and provide the warmth of friendship because if ever I was in a similar predicament, I know I would want someone to care about me. 300 Blankets is fortunate to have an amazing leadership and management team who share these values, and with our amazing volunteers, I know that we are in an exceptional position to build upon the foundations laid by Warren as we look towards a continued future of keeping our community warm.
