23.01.2022 After three rounds of consultation, the AWEX board in April unanimously agreed to maintain the NWD’s current definitions for non-mulesed and mulesed wool, which meant growers could nominate wool from freeze-branded sheep as non-mulesed on the NWD. WTF!! Consultation with who? So, either AWEX aren’t game to ensure the future of the industry by promoting genetically bred Non Mules or are they promoting Steining/Freeze Branding as the same to save the industry so that the atro...cities bred from archaic studs for all to see in some NSW AuctionsPlus catalogues this year can stay in business and keep our Merino numbers up?! Or is there a mysterious vested interest here... It’s an insult to all Stud and Commercial breeders who have been on the genetical Non Mules path for some 10-15 years to witness an artificial mules which will allow even more breech wrinkled monoliths to be bred - and be nominated as Unmulesed!! Yep we need merino numbers like blazes yet if we go for it, get up to more sustainable levels and suddenly Freeze branding is banned due to subsequent, most likely Green backlash, the whole job will be ...pharked!! Support the volumes of studs who have their finger on the pulse with this gear. We can’t improve fleece weight without waste. Noticing more fleece rot and water stain this year and lacking staple length? Strive for more lambs and early growth from ewes and sires that promote 6 month shearing due to long, bold crimped elastic fibre. That one point alone amongst a long list suggests that any mulesing discussion is being addressed...

22.01.2022 What a pleasure it was to meet and present The BreedELITE Sheep System to the Stud Merino Breeders at The Classings Classic 2020. Here are some of the highlights of the day at Murray Bridge Racing Club.

21.01.2022 It’s been a couple of years gap since my last ewe hogget classing at Netallie Station just this side of Wilcannia NSW for obvious reasons. Great to be back in the classing race to witness these, just on one year old ewe weaners, in absolute top order exhibiting great carcass traits and correct fibre density. Add to that no neighbouring pharkin’ dorper intrusion thus making it a perfect couple of days! The fibre pictured hitting 60mm all day at only four months growth - a cred...it to the McClure family’s management combined with favourable rainfall events and genetics. Poll rams here are predominantly selected by yours truly across a few studs as to not let any form of quality fall by the wayside and helped by a realistic budget. This is essential as opposed to the awkward term ‘station order’ ram consignment sent to the bush that really only deserve a one way ticket to the Middle East. Structural soundness and correct density is as important here as it is anywhere in the state. Genetics: Pimbena, Lucernbrae, Ramsgate, Borung & Mernowie. Good to catchup Jeremy, James, Kimbo and Pete!

15.01.2022 The SA Sire Evaluation Field Day at McPiggery’s Marama property near Karoonda can only be deemed as a great success. Around 100 visitors on the day inspected the 2019 drop Trial progeny and as a bonus the 2020 drops were penned as well - no mean feat can I add!! Much of the credit goes to the backbone of this enterprise, Duane Symonds and capable staff. The previous day to the Field Day saw a full day of drafting and partial setup in readiness for what turned into an informat...ive day to follow. Special mention to Anna Cameron as coordinator of all things Trial! Many Classings’ clients or studs that feature in Classic Ram Sales have entered in both drops here with all featuring well in specific traits. Calcookara, Caroonboon, Challara, Flairdale, Gunallo, Leahcim, Pepperwell, Ridgway and Wallaloo Park. Amongst many accolades, the Pepperwell sire in the 2020 drop lamb progeny had the greatest body weight gain between two measurements. There are definitely no winners or losers with these trials as most studs excel with certain traits but not all. Those who do feature well across many traits do enjoy some semen sale success or subsequent sire progeny recognition. Give me a hoy if you require further information re the 2019 drop and I’ll set you on the right path. You can also see my Trial write up in Cullings’20 Newsletter at www.classings.com.au

14.01.2022 Due to strict WA COVID control I missed one of my favourite ten days of the year classing ranging from Frankland and Boyup Brook down south to Northam and Badgingarra the other side of Perth. (Two weeks room isolation in Perth nah!) The closest I could get was Pimbena Polls’ ewe joinings at Wirrulla on our state’s West Coast yesterday. The area is now in great shape due to timely recent rain events and so was the growth in the pictured Pimbena stud ewes. Les Hamence’s recent success at Classic’20 with a naturally born set of twin rams claiming $10,000 at days end and the Pimbena On Property going well ensures his enthusiasm is maintained!

07.01.2022 There’s a creeper out there at the minute with the possibilities of the Steining/Freeze Branding technique for the removal of excessive skin from lambs being categorised as unmulesed!! A total insult to those enterprises, stud and commercial, that have genetically bred there way into Merino’s that require no mulesing whatsoever and haven’t done so for up to fifteen years! One of my favourite progressive clients is also fed up and making a stand by advertising the same fact t...hat there really are genetics of choice to make the switch quite simple. More to come but please share the bejingos out of this for general awareness - there’s some politics involved here too of course....

05.01.2022 ROAD HAZARD WARNING - There are reports of flooding on the Barrier Highway north of Olary. If you are driving on the highway please take extra care and drive to the conditions.
