25.01.2022 It's National Volunteer Week. A heartfelt thanks to all our wonderful volunteers - message from Beach Patrol Australia below.
24.01.2022 Sorry to say we wont be resuming group cleans for the foreseeable future but there are still ways we can all make a difference. Slowly but surely you can make a difference in your choices. Click the link for some helpful hints and suggestions.
24.01.2022 Its great to get clarification from Public Health that theres no reason to stop using your keep cups! The way I do it is to hang on to my lid, put my cup on t...he bench and ask the caf to pour the coffee shot and milk into the cup directly its contactless! ----------------------------------------- See - https://coronavirus.tas.gov.au/keeping-your/food-and-drinks - What about reusable coffee cups provided by the customer? Reusable cups provided by customers (commonly known as keep cups) have not been banned or prohibited. Food businesses can still accept keep cups if they choose to. Always check the cups are clean and not likely to cause cross-contamination and dont accept/use a cup if it is unclean. It is also a good idea to get the customer to retain/hold onto the lid. Baristas should be mindful of the need to wash their hands frequently when preparing coffee and other drinks. See more
24.01.2022 Such a high littered item. Here is the simple reason why. The drinker can never get all the liquid out. There is always some left for a few reasons. Last drops , it got cold or didnt taste that good. These awful cups are not water tight. No attempt by their designers to even do so. So then if you are in car where do you put this cup after you are finished with it? It will inevitably fall over and spill some. You dont want that so the option people take is to wind ...down the window and throw it out! If you are walking and finish with the drink where do you put it? Cant put it in a pocket or purse as it will leak that liquid. Plus too big. So it has to be dumped. If no nearby bin then on the ground, in a bush, behind a tree it goes, wherever, but you have to get rid of it! When you buy one you are willing to go out of your way to find a store, wait in line to receive it and hand over hard earned money for it, yet when it comes to disposal, it has to be dumped immediately as it might spill on you or you car. It is the wrong design for the product. We ought to be ashamed we allow this product to be used. See more

22.01.2022 But wait there is more! Ramona returned to the same spot today and cleaned up another 8 BeachPatrol bags of plastic filled twig debris washed in from the bay. The council Waste team had just emptied the 240 l bin from yesterday and now she near filled it again! @delwp_vic @sustainabilityvictoria
22.01.2022 How can we stop this? If we want the environment to look after us this we need to stop this and then clean it up. Cleaning up alone won't fix this.
21.01.2022 One consequence of the pandemic is the environment is no longer a top concern among voters. Understandably the economy, healthcare and employment are very much front of mind. We cannot, however, afford to neglect the environment. A healthy environment is the essential infrastructure that sustains us. Not only do we need to give it a sustained rest, we need to actively remediate some of the damage that has occurred over the past two hundred years, including the extraordinary contamination of our beaches, waterways and oceans from plastics. We need a new class of entrepreneur to lead the way with enterprises that create jobs, wealth and taxes without compromising and perhaps even benefiting the environment.
20.01.2022 With the relax of some of the Covid regulations our nice and quiet beaches and piers have been inundated with fishermen again. All competing for the same spots catching undersized fish that they then waste like these two being thrown in a bush. Plus leaving all their rubbish around again, bags, bottles, line, food, bait ..... surely we can control this more sustainably. @fisheriesvic @abcnews_au @theageaustralia @lilydambrosiomp

20.01.2022 To day is a milestone day. It marks the end of the 4th year of surveying the same section of beach tide line to audit what plastic items have washed in. For 2 years we did this every day. Counting every piece of plastic on 55 m of beach. Then the next 2 years we did every 2nd day and extrapolated. But what a haul we have made in that time. The worst day was 14000 pieces On a morn in Feb 2016. Just last week we had almost an 11,000 piece day. Today was a shocker too. Many 1000s. We know in great detail what the type of plastic item in the bay are. We can even estimate how many plastic pieces there are in the entire bay! If we think this and our Covid problem are unrelated then we need to stand back and look at the big picture. @theageaustralia @abcnews_au @newscorpaus
20.01.2022 Video of plastic debris that washed in during an on shore wind 2 days ago. Very sad. @lilydambrosiomp @abcnews_au
19.01.2022 Our lovely Bay.
19.01.2022 This 240 l wheelie bin was filled up by Ramona today. Filled with fine twigs mixed with a lot of small plastic bits including lots of Nurdles. Collected off 1 rock groyne corner. @delwp_vic @sustainabilityvictoria
18.01.2022 The new type of litter. Even when we have been struck by a dangerous virus that has made us all very aware or our surroundings some still cant change their sorry habits and learn lessons. Very sad.
18.01.2022 The irony had to make you laugh. In a beach tide line clean today I found a syringe with a needle on it. Then a few m later was a sharps container that had washed in too!
17.01.2022 The public trying to eliminate their guilt by putting their single use, non recyclable coffee cup in the recycle bin.
17.01.2022 Here we go with lock down litter
17.01.2022 Some of the 38 plastic bags pulled out of the waters edge yesterday along about 200 m. @lilydambrosiomp @delwp_vic @vic.sustainability
16.01.2022 This is what happens when people descend on the beaches on a hot day. It is taking locals and council workers hours to clean up this horrible mess. Please take your garbage with you or dispose of it responsibly.
15.01.2022 Before and after photos. Or perhaps - with humans and without humans. Change is needed on plastic use and fast change.
15.01.2022 This is what our beach looked like on Wednesday. We have a lot of things going on in the world at the moment. We cant just focus on one and lose sight of the others as we will never make lasting change that is needed to be made. @theageaustralia @abcnews_au @newscorpaus
15.01.2022 This photo shows unused, non biodegradable plastic cutlery just dropped on the ground outside a food store @fish_delish_ These items were probably made in China, put on a ship to Australia, brought in through the port to a wholesaler, delivered to a distributor, then sent to the food store. They then mindlessly handed them out with every meal more than likely and the user them dropped them on the ground within a few meters with out using them. How did we get to this point?
15.01.2022 FYI, Keep Cups can still be used in a COVID-safe way. Lets not contribute to another massive problem by creating mountains of single use plastics if we dont need to. https://coronavirus.tas.gov.au/keeping-your/food-and-drinks
14.01.2022 Thanks Liam and Ruby! They, with the help of their parents, collected 2 bags of rubbish, 21 bottles/cans and many cigarette butts near the 109 tram line and from Station Pier to Princes Pier last weekend.
13.01.2022 Example of the plastic rubbish fishermen let loose in the ocean. Between the manufacturers who look for cheapest production methods with no concern about the end life of their products and users who dont care about polluting the ocean and harming wildlife, we have a big problem on our hands. @fisheriesvic @lilydambrosiomp @theageaustralia @theageaustralia
13.01.2022 This is what happens when we get a warm day and people go outside. Some just leave their rubbish all over. It is a mystery why. These 21 bottles were along about 200 m of a narrow park beside the sea. All this plastic could easily have ended up in the bay. Another years for our CDS? @delwp_vic @sustainabilityvictoria @lilydambrosiomp @theageaustralia @abcnews_au
12.01.2022 One of the delights in our beach plastics survey today. The slightest onshore wind and the beaches get trashed with plastic rubbish.
12.01.2022 What can you say looking at this? Not enough bins? There are other bins just meters away. But bad behaviour seems to attract more of the same. No recycle bins here either. Another hot day even though mid week droves of people head to the beach and leave their mess. Most food was from local take always. Unopened cutlery, unopened condiment plastic containers. A lot of this can be controlled by the take away shops restricting access to these items. Not just blindly give them out! @cityofportphillip @delwp_vic @vic.sustainability @abcnews_au @marcuswpearl
12.01.2022 To all our fabulous volunteers out there, we just wanted to check in and make sure youre doing ok? We miss our regular catchups to clean our beaches and streets but most of all we miss seeing familiar friendly faces and cant wait to see you all again. We know many of you have been picking up litter while out on a walk to get some much needed air and exercise. Thank you so much for that. If you do continue to collect litter on your walks, please do wear gloves and be safe and if youre inclined, download the Litter Stopper App so you can upload information about the cleaning youve done. The data is important and valuable. Thanks again, stay healthy and connected.
12.01.2022 While we would not condone this approach to returning litter to it's original owner, .... Click to play the video.
11.01.2022 Amazing what some people think is a rubbish bin. A Cash for Containers scheme will stop this behaviour.
11.01.2022 Out on morning walk today. Picked 4 disposable gloves and 3 face masks from being thrown on the ground. That is not the way to Care for our environment or stop the spread of Covid.

10.01.2022 How we are making an anthropogenic layer with plastic. What can look like a clean area can be hiding plastic rubbish just below.

10.01.2022 This is the state of the beach today. Plastic filled weed. In our 35 m survey section we removed over 1500 pieces of plastic off the tide line. So terrible to see what have let happen. Since we have been in a week of counting votes let’s have a poll here. Is the State govt doing enough to stop this plastic pollution? @delwp_vic @sustainabilityvictoria @lilydambrosiomp @abcnews_au @theageaustralia @theheraldsun
09.01.2022 We are seeing more and more that more bins is not the answer to lazy public behaviour. Here is an empty bin that a person put their bag of rubbish beside as they couldn’t push the bag through the bin opening. They couldn’t be bothered to empty the contents into the bin first. So it was just left there on the ground. In addition it was full of recyclables that shouldn’t even be there. But no recyclable bin in site here. @cityofportphillip @abcnews_au @vic.sustainability @delwp_vic A CDS would eliminate this problem.

09.01.2022 These plastic bottles were stuck in the drain, otherwise they would be in the bay right now. If we had a CDS now this would not be happening. @sustainabilityvictoria @delwp_vic @theageaustralia @abcinmelbourne
09.01.2022 Two sets of bins just meters apart. One over filled and rubbish falling on the ground blowing away. The other just meters away empty. This over filling of bins needs to be changed. More frequent emptying of bins is one answer. (Costs rate payers more). Another is to make people actually think about their bin behaviour. (Costs every one more for the campaigns). Another is to stop giving people takeaways so their is no rubbish to deal with. Which will happen? @vic.sustainability @lilydambrosiomp @abcnews @7newsaustralia
06.01.2022 An on shore wind the day before pushed all this plastic up on to the beach tide line. How can we cut down our use of single use plastic? As we have to.
06.01.2022 Drains to the bay. These plastic bottles were destined for the bay.

05.01.2022 At 3207BeachPatrol we have attended too many beach cleans to have our efforts eclipsed by a profit only driven drink bottle company. Help STOP the big drink companies from further polluting our waterways. Vic is getting a cash for container scheme finally, but we dont want it managed by the companies that made the mess in the first place. It must be managed by independent companies whose roll is to maximise the return of the containers, not sabotage the scheme. Tell the govt to stop listening to lobbyists and put common sense into how the scheme needs to be run. Sign this campaign by the people who pressured the govt to follow all the other states to bring in a CDS. Time is critical we are told. Please sign today.
05.01.2022 Is this the look for the new rubbish bins? All this littered single use plastic and containers is doing nothing to help our sanity issues! @lilydambrosiomp @delwp_vic @sustainabilityvictoria
03.01.2022 Of course we'd love not to have to pick up litter, especially the single use plastic variety. Doubtless many of you are taking steps to avoid or reduce single ...use plastics. Here's just one small step you can take to reduce plastic wrap. These little bags can be washed and used thousands of times. Great to use for school lunches and on hikes. You can buy them or make them yourselves. When fruit is in season and cheap, consider drying some fruit for healthy delicious snacks that pack easily in this lightweight bag, a great replacement for snacks that come pre-wrapped in plastic. We find so many snack wrappers on our beach and street cleans throughout the year. Every piece of litter removed from the system makes a difference. This is what we call source reduction. #refuse #reduce #repurpose #reuse
02.01.2022 During the pandemic plastic litter is up. How about going without for a while instead and help stop the pandemic spreading? @sustainabilityvictoria @theageaustralia @abcnews
02.01.2022 Some people! Why would you make the effort to pick up your dogs waste, seal it in a non biodegradable bag then leave it on the sand for the tide to wash out?
02.01.2022 Stop this appalling behaviour. Put your masks in a proper bin, safe where they cant get loose. These two were washed up on the beach this morning. @3aw693 @abcnews_au
02.01.2022 Its National Volunteer Week. A heartfelt thanks to all our wonderful volunteers - message from Beach Patrol Australia below.
02.01.2022 A on shore wind today quickly resulted in a lot of washed up plastic along the tide line. Over about 500 m we collected 284 bottle tops 207 straws of which 42 were @mcdonalds (what happened to their promise to not use plastic straws by 2020???). Plus 49 food containers or bits of, cutlery, bottles and 100s & 100s of plastic bits. Just 500 m. Covid will be gone in less than a year. This plastic will be here in 500 years. We cant lose focus even in difficult times. @theageaustralia
01.01.2022 This is a product that should never have been released to the public. They get tossed out carelessly far too easily. @sustainabilityvictoria
