25.01.2022 Today is the International Day of Action on Forest Biomass Energy Forest biomass burning is not carbon neutral. It releases large amounts of CO2 emissions which can take decades to centuries for regrowing forests to recapture. Forest biomass combustion also emits more carbon per unit of energy than coal. Sign the petition to tell the European Union to call for the end of subsidies for burning forest wood for energy and for it to be excluded from renewable energy targets. Euro...pean biomass plants are currently burning forests from all over the world to turn in to electricity. The protection and restoration of forests needs to be prioritised for our health, the climate and biodiversity. 24.01.2022 MAXIMUM STOKE Heading back to Home Tree to measure its height and volume. At an estimated 70m 4m DBH at 40m it’s a red hot contender. Located in logging area TN005D it was saved by the team from @forestry.watch.tas - yep this giant tree and old growth forest was days away from being clearfelled by Sustainable Timber Tasmania. Someone asked recently don’t the rope hurt the tree my answer is a No. While ropes can damage bark we climb specificity with cambium savers to preven...t that. What really damages trees is chainsaws and bulldozers and that’s what we’re to stop, and we do stop them. 22.01.2022 The legendary Kev always an inspiration climbing with you buddy! Yesterday 4 of us climbed and measured Home Tree for both height and volume. Hot digidy dang it’s going to be close to the truly ridiculous 280 cubic meters set by Sustainable Timber Tasmania. Currently less than 40 tress are at or above this volume. Unlike the forestry industry, our Tasmanian Big Tree Register does not recognise 85m in height or 280 cubic meters as the only way for a tree to become a significa...nt tree worth of protection. 17.01.2022 Tarkine BioBlitz x Hobart Recreational Tree Climbing Club Over the weekend we took 15 new tree climbers up into the canopy of some very beautiful Myrtle Beech tree (Nothofagus cunninghamii). While up there we participated in a canopy diversity survey and sampled small amounts of canopy soil for invertibrates. All will be included in a PhD students study which hopefully will find some new invertibrate species. The area where we were surveying is in a logging area and has been ...partially logged. Thanks to the actions of the Bob Brown Foundation the loggers only took a small amount of the total area before leaving. This is simply the best example of old-growth myrtle forests in Tasmania and worth far more standing. Its free to join the Hobart Recreational Tree Climbing club and we hold free tree climbing sessions twice weekly depending on our availability. 14.01.2022 EUC2020 - The Snowiest Eucalyptus Pauciflora or the Snow Gum easily rivals the River Red Gum for the most iconic eucalypt. It is well known for living in high altitude environments where it takes on a gnarly twisted form from its exposure to the harshest of elements. However, Eucalyptus pauciflora is the champion of altitudinal distribution because it can be found from sea level all the way up to our highest peaks. Thanks to Eucalypt Australia

07.01.2022 Hobart Recreational Tree Climbing Club at Tarkine BioBlitz 2020. So happy to initiate 15 first time climbers into the tree tops and collect moss and insect samples for a uTas study. If you are keen to try tree climbing as a way to love trees more in a safe and self determined way come to one of our free sessions. Search Hobart Recreational Tree Climbing on FB to join the group. 07.01.2022 Eucalyptus gunnii subsp. divaricata is one of if not the most well-adapted Eucalypt to cold conditions. It produces a sweet sugary sap that naturally has a much lower freezing point. Known as the Miena Cider Gum it has a traditional use by the Palawa as a sweet, possibly fermented drink with a likeness to apple cider. Being so well adapted to very cold environments it is struggling to keep up the rate of temperature changes brought on by climate change. Thanks to Eucalypt Australia

06.01.2022 Another Giant Forest Gone. We were very lucky to spend 3 days climbing in the Alder Creek Grove of Giant Sequoia in 2018. Reading the news quoted below wasn't a great way to start the day. SEQUOIA CREST, Calif. Kristen Shive glanced around the blackened forest and started counting. She stopped at 13 the number of giant sequoias she spotted with charred trunks, scorched crowns and broken limbs. The towering trees had grown on this Sierra Nevada ridge top for well over 500 years. They had lived through many wildfires and droughts. But they could not survive the Castle fire, which swept into the Alder Creek Grove in the early hours of Sept. 13. In Sequoia Crest, a small vacation-home community developed in the grove in the 1960s, chimneys and foundations are all that remains of about a third of its 104 houses.

06.01.2022 Forest biomass burning is a major threat to the world’s forests, and to the climate. In many countries, burning forest wood for energy is included in renewable energy targets. However, it is far from renewable. It takes decades to centuries for forests to regrow. Tuesday 24th Nov is the International Day of Action on Forest Biomass Energy.... Sign the petition to tell the European Union to call for the end of subsidies for burning forest wood for energy and for it to be excluded from renewable energy targets. Many of the world’s forests, including Canada, Australia and South-east Asia, are being turned into wood pellets to feed Europe’s bioenergy plants. Please help by signing the petition and sharing on socials with the hashtag #forestsarenotfuels https://you.wemove.eu//the-eu-must-protect-forests-not-bur

03.01.2022 The Tree Projects are proud to be taking part in an International Day of Action on Forest Biomass Energy on 24th November. The focus of the action is to gather many thousands of individual signatures on a petition to the European Union. The message to stop biomass burning must come from everywhere affected by Europe’s unacceptable large scale biomass burning and poor leadership this includes Canada, Australia and South East Asia, as these countries forests are being turned... into wood pellets to feed European Bioenergy Plants. We are asking you, your friends, family and colleagues to each sign the petition and help spread the word with the hashtag #forestsarenotfuel on the 24th of November. https://you.wemove.eu//the-eu-must-protect-forests-not-bur

02.01.2022 Tarkine BioBlitz 2020 The highlight was facilitating the journey of 15 first time climbers into the trees. The most senior couple were in their late 60's and they both did it all under their own effort and determination with only a few minutes guidance. We absolutely love sharing our love of trees and exploring them with new people. If you are keen to have a go for free join the @Hobart Recreational Tree Climbing Club and stay tuned for updates. Dr Jen gave a very informative... talk about the Great forest Case and the state of the climate. We also lead 2 Forestry Watch habitat survey sessions documenting the habitat structures in the emergent eucalypts. We documented several trees with more than 10 habitat structures each. These surveys are more than just good science they are very much a learning and exploring exercise. Forestry Watch has several excursions planned for the rest of the year so follow them to get involved in positive change.
