24.01.2022 Australians love our fish and chips, but how much do we really know about what’s on our forks? Research from University of Queensland found that Australia catches 15 threatened marine species and imports eight species annually. These include school shark and scalloped hammerheads as well as three species of threatened tunas (southern bluefin, Pacific bluefin and big eye tuna). So how do we make sure that we’re doing the best for our marine life? Buying local is a good star...t. Australian Government studies have determined that 85% of Australian fisheries are sustainable. Eating molluscs and smaller fish lower down the food chain, such as herring, oysters and sardines will also help! Farmed fish such as salmon, basa and tilapia tend to be less sustainable because of the environmental load placed on areas with intensive fish farms by fish faeces and the energy intensive nature of providing feed for farmed fish. How can you check the sustainability of your seafood choices? Check out the Sustainable Seafood Guide by the Australian Marine Conservation Society. https://buff.ly/30dLGsD There are sustainable fish options for every seafood lover. We hope you find one you enjoy!

22.01.2022 This week’s Noongar word of the week is ‘kwilana,’ which means dolphin. Here in Western Australia, dolphins can be spotted in our marine parks, coastline, estuaries and rivers. Where was the last place you saw a dolphin?

20.01.2022 Our Noongar Word of the Week is ‘Yongka’ which means Kangaroo. Traditionally, the Yongka provided the Noongar people with skins for warmth and protection from the rain in the winter time. Among other uses, the Yongka were also a food source. In modern times, visitors from all around the world come to see the native Yongka!

17.01.2022 Calling all outdoor enthusiasts in WA! Western Australia is full of avid campers, hikers and off-road enthusiasts taking advantage of the pristine trails, sand dunes and 4WD tracks scattered around the State. As we all know, the south west is one of the most popular holiday destinations for outdoor adventure seekers. It is also home to a key threat to biodiversity in WA: dieback. Phytophthora dieback (dieback) is a plant pathogen which kills flora such as banksias, jarrah an...d grass trees by attacking their root system. The pathogen is primarily spread through mechanical movement such as attaching itself to wheels on a car or to the boots of hikers. So if you’re out and about in the south west- be sure to wash down your vehicle and clean the soil off your shoes before departing the area to curb the spread of dieback and preserve the biodiversity in WA! Clean on entry, clean on exit If you’re completing a project in a known dieback area, reach out to admin@360environmental to discuss dieback management plans and risk assessments!

13.01.2022 Reconciliation Australia released their 2021 State of Reconciliation Report yesterday. The report finds that support for reconciliation is growing and calls for us as a nation to move from a space of ‘safe’ to ‘brave’ on issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Reconciliation Australia CEO Karen Mundine says Reconciliation must be about more than raising awareness and knowledge. The skills and knowledge gained must now motivate us to braver action. Actions must involve truth-telling, and actively addressing issues of inequality, systemic racism and instances where the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are ignored, denied or reduced. You can read the full report here:

12.01.2022 360 Environmental would like to congratulate Bright Energy Investments on completing the180 megawatt Warradarge Wind Farm, near Eneabba. The wind farm is powering up to full capacity with all 51 turbines spinning and generating power by the end of October. At this stage, it will power the equivalent of 135,000 households’ annual electricity needs. The turbines are among the largest in WA with a tip height of 152 metres, sporting some of the longest blades onshore at 66.6 m...etres. Warradarge is recognised as one of the best renewable energy projects in Australia, due to its abundant wind resource and proximity to existing transmission infrastructure. We are proud that Western Australia is investing in a cleaner, greener energy system in WA. If your company needs help with approvals to get your energy project off the ground, reach out to [email protected]!

12.01.2022 Winter is done and with the end of the storms comes a change to beach structure in the Perth and the Southwest from a steep beach to something with a flat berm suitable to lie on. But have you ever wondered why this happens? The answer lies in the waves and the wind that forms them. The height and power of a wave is dependent on the speed of the wind running behind the wave. Our winter westerlies and south westerlies lead to strong waves that erode the berm, forming a sa...nd bar in the tidal zone where the sand is deposited. This is great for surfing but not so great for a day with the kids. Fortunately, as summer comes, the wind direction changes with wind coming from onshore, and the speed and power of the waves drops and sand is returned to the beach from the sand bar. This results in the creation of a much flatter beach with the fine sand returned much better to lie on! 360 Environmental can help with marine matters. If you have a marine project, please feel free to call our marine specialist, Alysia Woodward on 9388 8360. https://buff.ly/2x2T7FB

10.01.2022 Happy Recycling! Today marks the start of WA’s Containers for Change program, designed to encourage recycling of drink containers in WA. WA uses 1.3 billion drink containers per year, the equivalent of 490 containers for per year. #ContainersForChange aims to encourage #recycling by giving you back ten cents for each eligible can, carton or bottle. The containers will then be recycled to make new cans or bottles. It’s good for the planet, the community and your wallet! Nearly 200 container return points have been set up throughout the state. If you’re wondering where your local return point is, you can find it at:

06.01.2022 Would you eat fish that had been raised on flies? That’s the innovative plan of Waste Not Food Recycling located in Broome. The group has received almost $100,000 as a regional economic development grant to establish a pilot black soldier fly farm in Broome. The farm will turn food waste from homes and businesses into a protein product for the local pastoral and aquacultural industries, producing quality fertiliser as a by-product. Unlike pest flies, the black soldier ...fly does not feed as an adult, meaning they do not pose a risk to humans and are easy to manage. While the maggots are used as food in some parts of the world, the pilot facility in Broome is aiming to dry and then crush them into a meal that will be trialled as an aquaculture feedstock. 05.01.2022 When we think of fauna habitat, we don’t usually think of our own backyards. A recent study by the WA Biodiversity Science Institute in Albany indicates that residential gardens could support a similar diversity and abundance of mammals to urban bushland! With the exception of domestic pets, there were a similar number of introduced animals in gardens and urban bushland, according to the study. While most of us don’t manage urban bushland, we can take the initiative to des...ign and manage our gardens to help improve the number and diversity of native species. Some steps we can consider are: - Planting native trees, groundcover and shrubs. Larger plants should be complimented by groundcovers and small shrubs which provide protection for small birds and reptiles like blue-tongue lizards. - Leave leaf litter in your garden to attract insects and lizards and leave safe dead trees and hollowed limbs of live trees in your garden as nesting sites for birds. - Some grass is fine too! Djiti djiti (Willie wagtail) and Coolbardie (magpie) love digging for worms and insects in grassed areas. - Place a pond in a sheltered spot to provide water for birds and habitat for frogs. - Minimise the use of chemicals and pesticides in your garden. You might only be planning to kill snails, but native animals can also fall prey to backyard poisons.

04.01.2022 Summer is on the horizon and the stunning Western Australian beaches are calling! Snorkelling is a great way to explore the incredible marine life at our doorstop. It may seem complex but with a few tips, it’s easy to get hooked on finding the next fish. Here are a few tips to get you out there and loving it: 1. Go early: We hate to say it, but the offshore winds make snorkelling an early morning activity. The winds stir up sediment in the water column, particularly outside... the protected waters of Cockburn Sound. 2. Go with a buddy: Go with a buddy and keeping an eye on each other helps you keep safe and spot interesting fish you might otherwise miss. 3. Cover up: To avoid sunburn and reef scrapes, wear a light wetsuit or even just a long sleeve shirt and pants. Gloves are also useful if you want to push off reefs. 4. Love your gear: Give your gear a good wash in cold water before drying and putting it away. This will stop salt damage to metal clips and zips. 5. Try a new spot: From Yanchep Lagoon to Point Peron and beyond, Perth is full of snorkel spots. https://buff.ly/36oAtZp has a good list of places to go. See more

03.01.2022 Welcome to the team Meisha! Meisha has recently joined the Approvals team as an Environmental Consultant. She has a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Sustainable Development. Meisha did some work experience with 360 Environmental back when she was studying toward her degree, so she’s excited to be part of the team here again. An interest in sustainability issues such as waste, climate change and protecting biodiversity are what drove Meisha to pursue a career in the sustainability... and environmental space. She is looking forward to applying the analytical and critical thinking skills gained through her studies and previous work in waste and construction in this new setting. Outside of work she likes to spend as much time outdoors as possible, whether it’s weekends away camping or days spent relaxing at the beach. She spent four months of last year traveling through Europe before living in London for a year. A highlight of her time away was two weeks spent travelling around Slovenia in a campervan.

02.01.2022 Did you know there are over 2000 species of Australian native djilyaro and around 800 of these occur in W.A.? Djilyaro, meaning bees, is the word for this week. Djilyaro are crucial for biodiversity due to the important role they play in pollination, which helps maintain the health and viability of natural ecosystems.
