25.01.2022 G'day Runners, Our last calender run for the year this Sunday before we roll into our Shawn's Summer Series over the Summer. It's the Pub to Pub Run with 5klm or 16klm options from the Magoffin's place this Sunday at 16 Ocean Avenue, Slade Point. With the longer run at 16klm, remember we have an earlier start at 6.30am to try and beat the heat. We are also trying a new loop course for the 16klm, it's got the lot..road, trail and beach. The 5klm will also take in the same Slad...ie "ocean vistas". To give runners a sneak peak we're attaching the course maps here on our FB page, just click the link above the map to view it in more detail. As always both courses will be well marked with our usual MRR coreflute triangles with directional arrows. Unfortunately our COVID Safe Plan doesn't allow for our usual Bacon and Egg Magoffin's but bring a towel and togs and the pool will still be available for a cool down. See you there.

21.01.2022 A great effort by over twenty Mackay Road Runners who tackled the high humidity and strong headwinds from Magpies Sporting Complex towards the Bruce Highway via the meandering pathways of North Mackay. Versatile Club Captain Jim Ford adapted the usual race course to work around the Bruce Highway roadworks. Jim's 'catch the field' concept worked well with the back markers's main challenge to chase down the leaders across both events. Rod Elworthy was a standout competitor, as... was Robin Stinson, Michael Schoer, Tim Caddy, Derek Woods and Joe Grech. Joe performed extremely well despite having completed a marathon the previous day, congratulations Joe, awesome effort! Birthday girls, Jo Skinner and Jo Hughes found time in their very social Sunday schedule to slot in a quick 6km run before heading home for an evening of light festivities. Andrew Short easily completed the 6km event alongside the Jo's, hundreds of ducks, geese and varying wildlife whilst engaging in scenic vistas of the beautiful Gooseponds. Excellent performances also came from Simon Henderson, Teresa Hackney, Glynis Forse, Emma Johnson, Jeanette Farrugia, Alan Zamparutti, David Isbister, Peter Ellison, Stephen Oberg and Heli Talinurn. This Sunday's event will include testing undulations amongst the sandy trails of the Lamberts Beach Park Reserve. The course commencing 5.30pm from the Seabreeze Tavern end of the Lamberts Beach Esplanade will consist of four loops totalling 8km, however, shorter course options are always offered. Jim Ford would appreciate all attendees to be signed in for race start 5.30pm sharp due to fast fading light towards the end of the course. Many thanks to Jim for providing post run refreshments thanks to the $2 gold coin donations from participants. Runners are reminded of the Wednesday weekly social track training sessions held 5.30pm at the Aquatic and Recreation Centre (ARC) at Ooralea. The training sessions are free with only a $3 entry fee to the track facility payable at the pool reception. Many thanks to Jim for organising the well planned track sessions which are very beneficial for long distance endurance athletes as well as middle distance and sprinters. Mackay Road Runners will be holding it's Annual General Meeting in the coming months, therefore, those interested in becoming a member are most welcome to attend. All ideas are up for discussion and majority voting by members will ensure a mixed and enjoyable season. All committee positions will be up for re-election, therefore, please consider what you can do for the Mackay Road Runners in it's 45th year.

21.01.2022 What a fantastic morning for our annual trail run through the beautiful Eungella National Park. It stayed breezy and cool throughout the morning while 30 runners traversed the 6 km or 20 km courses. The trail was marked out by the very experienced Matt Stevens who also guided runners during the run. As always we are very grateful Matt. Thank you also to Tim for his signage and set up of the start area. The looping 6 km course was enjoyed by a speedy Lynn Treis, followed by Ro...ss and Leanne Connor and Jacqui Wonnocott. Leon Ryan, trail running guru, was ecstatic with his time in covering the more challenging 20 km course making this a PB by 4 minutes. Mick Scholer and Paul Butler were only a few minutes behind followed by Tim Caddy. First women to finish were Ainslie Heinke and Jaylene Harrison crossing together with huge winning smiles followed by Jose Short. It was great to see so many experienced trail runners make the most of the morning as well as those who came along to give it a go. There’s nothing like a sweaty trail run and a few stories of trips, scrapes and prickly vines to bring us together. Next Sunday our run is Whibley’s Wander from 25 Duncan Street with 5 km and 12 km options hosted by Julie Whibley. Reminder; Wednesday track sessions continue under the guidance of Jim Ford at 5:30pm at the Mackay ARC each week for $3 to cover the lights. Saturday social long runs also leave from the Wood St cinema carpark at 5:00am every week.

20.01.2022 Mackay Road Runners Shawn's Summer Social Series continued with a spectacular 5/10km run through the beautiful Cape Hillsborough National Park's undulating trails, beaches and unsealed roads. Club Captain, Jim Ford set a challenging loop course where runners of all ages and abilities could test their fitness levels throughout one of Mackay's most tourist visited regions and it's right here on our doorstep! The 4.30pm start was perfect for all athletes to do their desired cou...Continue reading

15.01.2022 The Shawn Claydon Memorial 5km & 10km was held in cool conditions from 7am from the new beautifully renovated Queens Park precincts. Upon leaving the Park, runners were faced with strong headwinds as they struggled on East Gordon Street toward Binnington Esplanade. The social event was in memory of local champion runner, Shawn Claydon who passed away two years ago from Pancreatic Cancer. The formal 10km Shawn Claydon Shield was not awarded this year due to COVID -19 restric...Continue reading

12.01.2022 Mackay Road Runners' final run on the formal 2020 calendar was held from the President's residence in the scenic Slade Point suburb. The conditions over the very testing course were quite breezy as runners traversed the undulating road, sandy beaches and rocky terrain through Slade Point, Andergrove, Mackay Harbour North Wall and Lamberts Beach. The 5km and 16km course options started early Sunday morning with threatening clouds overhead for the majority of the event. Club P...resident, Tim Magoffin welcomed new and existing runners before describing the technical loop style course. Approximately thirty runners enjoyed the scenic vistas as they challenged themselves through soft sand and testing ascents and descents. Excellent performances came from Mick Scholer and Rodney Elworthy as they crossed the line together in the 16km followed by Jo Skinner and Moranbah runner, Gary Jenkinson. Five kilometre runners Andrew Short and Murray Wonnocott excelled over the undulating terrain to be the first two runners home, followed by Simon Henderson, Heli Telinurn and Jo Hughes. Great running also came from Shane Donnollan, Peter Ellison, Craig McGahey, Carmel Mahon, Tim Caddy, Lyn Treis, Les Tselepy and Stephen Oberg in the 16km as well as 5km competitors, Sandy Strong, Stuart Sprott, Jeanette Farrugia and Colin Hardy. Congratulations to several local ultra marathon runners who excelled in the 60km Brisbane Trail Ultra at the weekend including Jose Short, Ainslie Heinke, Tahnee Malaguen and June Bradley. In other trail running ultra marathon news, Mackay's Mick Scholer will tackle his first ultra marathon at the Blackall 100km in two weeks with fellow experienced local runners, Leon Ryan, Tim Caddy, Peter Shuttlewood and Matt Graves. In addition, June Bradley, Ainslie Heinke, Tahnee Malaguen and Jose Short will back up once again to complete the 50km race at the same event alongside local training partners including Gavan Porter. Many thanks to race day hostess Sandra Comben and race set up/pack up volunteers, Arthur Dick, Tim Magoffin and Andrew Short. Runners are now looking forward to the annual Presentation dinner this Saturday night at The Grove as well as the very popular off season Shawn's Summer Social Series commencing this Sunday from 5.30pm....program to be uploaded on the website soon. Many thanks to the wonderful 2020 committee for an amazing job of restructuring what was left of the COVID damaged program so that runners could finally enjoy a very unusual year of running. Thanks also for the patience and support of club members and the local community. Runners are reminded that an Annual General Meeting and Calendar Meeting will be scheduled in the coming months to discuss the 2021 season, therefore, watch this space for times and venues.

09.01.2022 G’day Runners, Although the running season has been shortened and we haven’t been able to hold our usual season full of competitive handicapped and Club Championship runs due to the impacts of COVID 19, it has been great to get back together on the roads and trails for some social running before the weather heats up again. Despite the much shortened MRR running season, the MRR Committee decided that we will still hold our annual MRR Dinner, just without the trophy presentatio...n bit. Also as a thankyou to our fantastic MRR Members for their continued loyalty the club will subsidise the cost of the dinner at The Grove. For $30 this year, members will have a scrumptious three course meal and a welcome drink. As always, non-members are more than welcome as well. Saturday the 10th of October is the date, 6.30pm the start time. All the details are on the flyer. RSVP’s need to be in by the 30th of September to Vicki Vickers. Get in before it sells out! See you there!

08.01.2022 For those runners who have already read the post re the start of Shawn's Summer Series, have another look and you'll see that it has been adjusted to reflect that the first Sunday afternoon series run is Sunday week at 5.30pm from the Surf Club not this week, have a break! As previously mentioned, click on the link on the MRR website calendar page to see the full Shawn's Summer Series calendar

08.01.2022 Mackay Road Runners' Club Secretary, Julie Whibley and her family hosted the inaugural Whibley Wander 5km & 12km from their home in West Mackay on Sunday morning. The very successful and enjoyable event was held in warm, spring conditions from the Whibley's with pre and post race refreshments generously on offer from the host family and the Club's Vice-President, Vicki Vickers. Club President Tim Magoffin thanked the Whibley's for their awesome hospitality as well as welcomi...ng new and existing runners before describing the out and back 5km and 12km race distance options. The Whibley Wander course lead runners from the quiet West Mackay residential street onto Bridge Road towards the old Hospital Bridge (new fishing bridge) before meandering through the beautiful Cathy Freeman and Bluewater trails towards the respective 2.5km and 6km turnaround markers. Excellent performances came from a multitude of talented runners including Stuart Sprott, Ross Connor, Tim Magoffin, Murray Wonnocott, Jose Short, Carmel Mahon, Jo Hughes, Mick Scholer, Lynn Treise, Bec Scholer, Rodney Elworthy, Andrew Short, Leanne Connor and Emma Johnson. Many thanks to Arthur Dick, Tim Magoffin, Julie Whibley and Vicki Vickers for their excellent set up of the third last social run on the COVID-19 amended 2020 program. Runners are now looking forward to the Benita Willis 10km event to be held this Sunday at 7am from the Bluewater Lagoon parklands. Unfortunately, due to the disrupted season, there will be no handicap start this year and therefore no formal trophy winner. The spectacular Benita Willis Perpetual Trophy will however be on display from last year's winner, Tam Wanstall. Four time Olympian, Benita Willis is a proud Mackay 'chick' as she personally notes on her Olympic attire which she donated for the framed trophy. The club is so appreciative of the support Benita gives to the Mackay Road Runners Club and their signature event, the BMA Mackay Marina Run. The annual Mackay Road Runners Dinner will be held on Saturday 10th October at The Grove Tavern from 6.30pm. Those wishing to attend will need to RSVP strictly by the 30th September to [email protected]. Vicki will then advise the bank details to prepay dinner costs of $30 per member and $60 per non member. The Grove has strict rules that must be applied and followed if we are to be allowed on the premises. With the current COVID restrictions, seating will be limited therefore please contact Vicki asap as definite numbers need to be finalised to The Grove asap. Please understand that the usual formal trophies will not be applicable this year, however, there will be other fun and frivolity in lieu.

07.01.2022 And here's the 5klm course. Same deal, click on the map and then click on the link above the map to see a detailed version.

06.01.2022 Mackay Road Runners enjoyed perfect running conditions for their annual Pre Father's Day social 5/10km run from the beautiful Botanic Gardens precincts last Saturday morning. Club President, Tim Magoffin described the parkrun style course to runners who rejoiced in tackling their individual options in the early morning sunshine with their buddies. Female speedster, Alyce Garth sizzled over the two loop ten km course to be first in the girls and fifth overall behind junior cha...mpion, Alex Couldrey, Nick Rewald, Rodney Elworthy and Joe Grech. Alyce is a top level runner doing extremely well with a new little baby that she takes in the running pram or hiking backpack for regular outings. Runners were in excellent form including the usual Saturday morning running crew of Sandy Strong, Matt Stevens, Julie Whibley, Tim Magoffin, Joe Grech, Ross and Leanne Connor. David Isbister had a great morning running with his grandson Cooper Leeson as they easily completed the 5km. Scott McIntosh pushed his toddler, James in the running pram for a quick scoot around the Botanic Gardens trails, whilst his wife Dale and new six week old baby girl Lucy waited at the finish line. Runners and volunteers stayed for a post run coffee or two from the awesome, Cafe2U barista's Owen & Jeanine whilst they waited for the exciting post run Father's Day themed random draw prizes. Runners were ecstatic with the Typo prizes especially Sandy Strong who won a reuseable Typo note book and calico bag with the meaning of life on the side. Vicki Vickers and Arthur Dick substituted their run for voluntary registrar and timekeeping duties. Runners are always so appreciative of the voluntary assistance the club gives to every weekly race including course set up in the early hours of the morning and then pack up after the last runner is through. Mackay Road Runners fearless leader, Tim Magoffin is an expert in setting up although missing his partner set up guy, Andrew Short who has been unable to attend due to work commitments. Stacey Tresise made a welcome return to the track alongside Peter Ellison, Carolyn Steginga, John Couldrey, Jose Short, Jo Hughes, Julie Whibley, Ricky Parker, Ross Vickers, Jo Skinner, Craig McGahey and Carmel Mahon. This Sunday's social run commences 8am from the Broken River carpark which is 5km left past the Eungella Chalet. The course options include a social 6km and 20km, however, runners can opt to turn early so long as they make their decision known to the Race Directors. Social distancing is still the major rule of the day, therefore, runners will need to register with the organisers before and after the event so that all competitors have been accounted for. Check out the Mackay Road Runners website for any updates and new announcements.

05.01.2022 Over twenty avid cross country trail runners revelled in the challenging 4km/8km loop style course set by Mackay Road Runners Club Captain, Jim Ford. The Lamberts Beach Reserve has an excellent array of sand, hills, timber steps, wildlife and brushy scrub where athletes can test their fitness and navigational skills via the trails and beach. The warm conditions proved to be tough as runners tracked their way through the open sand and shaded trails, however, the awesome sea...Continue reading

04.01.2022 G'day Runners, just a reminder to the change in start/finish area for this year's Eungella Trail Run this Sunday. To fit in with the social distancing requirements of our club's Industry COVID Safe Plan we will be marshalling and starting and finishing in the Broken River Visitors Area at Broken River this year. For those lunatics who haven't visited the Eungella National Park yet?????, Broken River is just a further 5klm along the road once you reach Eungella at the top of the range. See the maps attached for the start/finish area location as well. Same distances as last year, the 20klm will be from Broken River to Eungella and return and we will have a shorter 6klm option, all via the fantastic rainforest trails. Start time is 8am Sunday so make sure you get to Broken River early to register. See you there!

02.01.2022 It was a beautiful morning on the Blue Water Trail for the Mackay Road Runners annual Benita Willis 10km Handicap event last Sunday. Although this year without the lure of the highly admired trophy over 30 runners enjoyed the run as a social event. Benita Willis is a four time Olympian and proudly calls Mackay "home". Her support of our local running events is much appreciated. We look forward to seeing her again next year at the BMA Mackay Marina Run which she proudly suppo...rts each year. Rodney Elworthy was very pleased to break 40 minutes and be first over the 10km course with Mick Scholer chasing and not far behind. Joseph Vida and Shane Donollan ran great times as did Graeme Harris, Peter Ellison, Robin Stinson and Stephen Oberg. Alyce Garth had another scorching run to be first woman over the 10km with speedy Jose Short not far behind. Jo Skinner, Bernie McKinnon, Jeanette Farrugia and Emma Johnson were also enjoying the dash along the Blue Water Trail. Great running over the 5km event by Andrew Short and Ross Connor followed by Jo Hughes, Tahnie Malagueno, Paul Butler, Lynn Treis, Leanne Connor, Mel Harris, Stuart Sprott and Jan Smith. Café 2 U once again joined us to provide the opportunity for refreshments after the run. This was much appreciated by many of us. Next week’s run is sadly our last run for the season but a classic event with 5km and 16km courses on offer, Tim’s Pub to Pub Run. Tim has made some adjustment to the 16km course which should add a little extra to finish off the season. Look out for course maps here on FB for a mix of road, trail and Sladie "ocean vistas" to finish off the official season!!!
