14.01.2022 THROWBACK TUESDAY #24: SYDNEY OLYMPIC AT TOYOTA PARK!!! We delve into Vasili's personal archives for this one. We go back to 2001 to Sydney Olympic, or as they were know then, "Olympic Sharks" and their first home game at their new "home" Shark Park. It was meant to be the ideal deal of the Olympic Sharks- working with the rugby league team, Cronulla Sharks, and being based at Toyota Park. ... Well, it lasted for a few years- there is a lot of history there... enough to write a book on it... But here is the match day program, Welcomng the Olympic Sharks to Toyota Park, with goalkeeper Clint Bolton on the cover...

12.01.2022 EIGHTY YEARS AGO: GREECE'S TRIUMPHANT "OXI" DAY!!! What a huge anniversary today is!!! Eighty years ago today since Greek Prime Minister, Ioannis Metaxas, defiantly proclaimed OXI (NO) to the Italian Government's 'request' to annex Greece and subsequent invasion. It was a moment when all the world's attention turned to little Greece and, for the next five months, Greece's advance and victories captivated the world... In my long journey of recording oral history (and photogr...aphic material), I am very proud to have recorded the stories of thirteen Greek war veterans from the Greek-Italian War (1940- 41) and they were subsequently published in my book, "Between the Shots and the Silence: Hellenes at War (World War II and the Korean War). With the passing of this generation of WWII war veterans, these published first-hand accounts from Greek war veterans- who later migrated to Australia- are an invaluable source of what they experienced on the war front. What these stories did for me was personalise the heroic Greek war effort; they added human faces to all the enormous challenges encountered by the Greek armed forces and their subsequent victories and achievements... So, I am so privileged to have spent time with Kostas Papandreou, Georgios Mitrokas, Georgios Kategiannis, Ioannis Drakoulis, Alexandros Eleftheriou, Ioannis Totsis, Kostas Argyropoulos, Panagiotis Bouzanis, Grigorios Kambas, Pandelis Lantouris and Vasilis Vaitsas. I also spent time and recorded Panayiotis Rizoglou and Kostas Tourlas who recounted the great retreat, after the German invasion of 1941. Thank you gentlemen and to your families... it remains an honor to have met you all... Eighty years later, it is a time to pay tribute to the determination and courage of those who fought in this war, and today we must reflect on the significance in settling disputes and conflicts through diplomacy and good will.... This is the cover of "Between the Shots and the Silence"...

02.01.2022 THROWBACK TUESDAYS #20: Our Parents' Obscure Greek Records Long before Spotify and iTunes, and CDS and even cassettes, there were records...!!! Recently, I have been unpacking boxes and I am gradually finding my record collection... ... ONE thing I do not understand is how our parents bought these generic Greek albums...???? Were original titles hard to get? More expensive? I am sure every house had a Trio Belcanto!!! Admittedly, they bought some real classics- more of those in the later weeks... But for now, who were The Athenians? Kiriakos and His Orchestra? What are some of your obscure Greek LPs?
