24.01.2022 We thought we'd share an example of what is possible academically when one gets to the cognitive root of learning weaknesses. This picture shows two writing sa...mples - collected 6 weeks apart - from the same student - who was brand new to Arrowsmith as of September 2017. This student works daily and each night for homework on an exercise called Motor Symbol Sequencing - up to two hours each day. This exercise is designed to strengthen one's ability to track with the eyes, and to create, remember and recreate motor plans (ie a series of symbols expressed in the same way each time, such as we do when printing or writing a word). As students work on this exercise they grow their capacity to write more fluently, to catch those little errors we all make when we are distracted or not able to express ourselves quickly and efficiently. As they become more efficient with expression the quality of the content expressed improves, as now the brain is not occupied solely with the mechanics of writing - space for creativity and focus is freed up, essentially! This student is also working on Symbol Relations (Clocks), which has positively impacted her ability to plan her words and write much more fluidly. Additionally, she is working on an exercise called Predicative Speech, which helps strengthen the brain's capacity to the create and connect the flow of sentences. Our brain is certainly amazing - it's eye opening to consider how many parts are responsible for the 'seemingly' simple act of getting one's ideas on paper! Finally, keep in mind that this student is not spending her day practising her writing - she is spending her day strengthening her brain's capacity to write. The two are very different. We can only achieve what the brain has the capacity to learn. How different will this student's future be as her capacities continue to increase. The sky's the limit!! See more
