24.01.2022 Why ALL Women Should do Pelvic Floor Work - by Peta Titter. On so many occasions I have been talking about pelvic floor exercises to a group of women and one of the regular responses I receive is, ‘I have not had children so this is really not a topic relevant to me’. There are an incredible amount of urban myths about pelvic floor exercises and this is one of the biggest! Women who have not had children are still prone to urine leakage throughout their life. With 24 % of w...omen in Australia in their reproductive years remaining child free, this is a whole subsection of society being neglected. When we are younger there are lots of activities that can impact on anyone’s pelvic floor: constipation, chronic coughing, always holding your breath. Basically anytime you increase the pressure in your abdominal cavity by bearing down you can impact your pelvic floor. Certain sports also have an impact; trampolining, horse riding and gymnastics to name a few... One thing that is inevitable in a woman’s life is menopause. When we head into menopause our hormone levels change. Oestrogen is a female defining hormone... and it affects how muscles contract and heal. The change in oestrogen affects the pelvic floor in two ways: - Your pelvic floor does not contract or heal as well - Your pelvic floor can atrophy (waste) by up to 1% a year post menopause... My biggest bit of advice on pelvic floor health is ‘prevention is better than cure.’ As much as this all sounds very grim there is a simple solution look after your pelvic floor. Start doing pelvic floor exercises!... Did you know that some studies have suggested that pelvic floor muscle strength may be related to increased sensation and sexual satisfaction? So why ignore your pelvic floor? Take control and make it work for you. Visit the Women’s Health Education Network or a pelvic health professional to learn about how to strengthen your pelvic floor.

24.01.2022 We are passionate that CRITICAL THINKING is essential to any Pilates instructors skill set. Critical thinking involves objectively analysing and evaluating the information we receive and the beliefs we hold . This could be the information we are told during teaching training, right through to societal belief systems. For us at 3 Degrees this involves spending long periods consulting latest academic research (thanks Google Scholar ). We frequently discover new best practices and ensure we are MENTALLY AGILE to move with the times. * * * #pilates #pilateshobart #pilatesinstructor #pilatesinstructors #hobart #3degreespilates #pilatesboutique #smallbusiess #supportsmallbusiness #tasmania #josephpilates #painscience #mentalagility #movement #evidencebased #exercisescience #exercisephysiology

23.01.2022 We are now well and truely into the crazy holiday season and here at 3 Degrees we understand how hard it can be to keep active and eat/drink a balanced diet . However, we encourage you not to think of every day with no exercise and an extra glass of wine as a failure . Instead... ENJOY and move on! Take the time to mindfully savour every indulgence and some rest from your usual busy life. Remember that one big night or lazy day is not the end of the world. ... The key is: EVERYTHING IN MODERATION. Try engaging in fun exercise.... this could be going for a long walk with family, having a hit of backyard cricket or kicking a footy with your kids. Our gorgeous studio is waiting for you after the break where you can enjoy working your body to a whole new level once again (just like our lovely client pictured on the Cadillac)! * * * #pilates #pilateshobart #pilatesinstructor #pilatesinstructors #hobart #3degreespilates #pilatesboutique #smallbusiess #supportsmallbusiness #tasmania #josephpilates #dietculture #christmas #exercise #activityguidelines See more

23.01.2022 Have you ever tried to do a new movement and felt like you simply couldn't do it , and it was just weird? Well... we have some good news . Although your body may not quite be ready for the load being placed on it - making the task too difficult, it is also very probable you just haven't learnt the motor program yet. ... Motor programs are the sum of subroutines (smaller movements) that make up complete skills. No matter how strong, experienced, or flexible etc. you are, a brand new motor program can easily make you feel like a complete novice once again. As you practice the skill more you will have good motor performances, and eventually become skilled in performing that program. * * * #pilates #pilateshobart #pilatesinstructor #pilatesinstructors #hobart #3degreespilates #pilatesboutique #smallbusiess #supportsmallbusines #motorlearning #motorprograms #skillaquisition #motorperformance #sportpsychology See more

22.01.2022 At 3 Degrees we EMPOWER clients to MOVE FEARLESSLY. You may ask however what this actually means. Well... fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain or harm. To move without fear is to move without subconscious or conscious notions you are weak, broken or need fixing, and to have a body conditioned to withstand everyday stressors with ease. * * * #pilates #pilateshobart #pilatesinstructor #pilatesinstructors #hobart #3degreespilates #pilatesboutique #smallbusiess #supportsmallbusiness #tasmania #josephpilates

18.01.2022 What is VISUALISATION and how can it improve physical functioning? Visualisation is a skill involving the ability to watch yourself in your mind’s eye. Visualisation can establish stronger connections between your nervous system and your muscles - enhancing motor program learning and performance. Why visualise?... - Accelerate the learning process by better organising and coordinating movement. - Complement physical practice through establishing connections via nervous pathways between our brains and muscles. - Reduce movement associated anxiety. What are different visualisation techniques? - Performance practice - Instant pre-play (right before you do something) - During performance - Instant replay (right after you do something) - Performance review What should I do when I visualise myself doing a skill/s? - Start with relaxation. - Stay alert. - Use the present tense. - Set realistic goals. - Set specific goals. - Use all your senses. - Visualise from the inside out and from the outside in. - Visualise at the correct speed. - When you are setting up your rehearsal program ensure the sequence is technically correct. - Slowing down allows you to isolate components of your technique. - Practice regularly. - Consistency is more important than the length of rehearsal. If possible, practice at the same time and for the same length each day. - Enjoy it! * * * #pilates #pilateshobart #pilatesinstructor #pilatesinstructors #hobart #3degreespilates #pilatesboutique #smallbusiess #supportsmallbusiness #tasmania #sportspsychology #visualisation #mentalrehearsal #psychology

17.01.2022 Did you know you don't have to wake up sore to have had a 'good' workout? Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is the term most commonly used to refer to the stiff, often painful feeling that may occur after a workout. DOMS usually onsets approximately 1 day after a workout and can last up to about a week. Although the exact science behind DOMS continues to be researched, the most widely agreed explanation is that it is the presence of micro tears within the muscle. These t...ears are believed to mainly occur through the eccentric (lengthening) phase of muscle contractions. DOMS usually onsets after increased training intensity which could come about through things such as reduced recovery, increased repetitions, sets and loads. Starting a new form of exercise or trying different exercises can also cause DOMS. So you may be thinking: "surely DOMS is good then because it means you are really pushing your body?" Well... not necessarily. To achieve fitness gains you need to progressively overload the body beyond its current capacity, and you can easily achieve progressive overload without experiencing DOMS, especially in an exercise format you are used to. Furthermore, DOMS creates an inflammatory process and therefore recovery is required. Thus, if you experienced DOMS every single workout and wanted to workout frequently, you could in fact inhibit gains as the body would not able to heal its tissues sufficiently between training sessions. * * * #pilates #pilateshobart #pilatesinstructor #pilatesinstructors #hobart #3degreespilates #pilatesboutique #smallbusiess #supportsmallbusiness #tasmania #doms #delayedonsetmusclesorenss #sportscience #exercisescience

05.01.2022 MORE INSTRUCTOR NEWS ... This week we say goodbye to Henry. 05.01.2022 Did you know that your tissues don’t really know the difference between springs, resistance bands/cables, weights and gravity? Essentially, all of these items can be utilised to place load through tissues and make them stronger, however each form of resistance lends itself to different goals. This more or less means that if you wanted to strengthen and grow your bicep muscles you could utilise load on Pilates based equipment that has springs just like you could with a dumbbe...ll. This is because when muscle fibres are consistently loaded beyond their current capacity they will become stronger and hypertrophy (growth) will occur, no matter what resistance form is used. What does impact this is HOW the resistance is utilised. More repetitions under less load will build more endurance, and less repetitions with more load will build more strength and promote more hypertrophy. Different resistance forms offer different advantages. For example, amazing strength gains can be made during the lengthening (eccentric) phase of a muscle when it is loaded beyond what it can do during the shortening (concentric) phase of the contraction. This means additional support is needed in the concentric phase so that the eccentric contraction can take place. If you were doing chin ups on the Pilates Cadillac you could place springs around your feet to assist during the concentric phase of the muscle contraction on the way up, then allow the impactful lengthening phase to take place. Additionally, the body would have to resist the spring during this phase. * * * #pilates #pilateshobart #pilatesinstructor #pilatesinstructors #hobart #3degreespilates #pilatesboutique #smallbusiess #supportsmallbusiness #tasmania #sportscience #exercisescience #strengthtraining

04.01.2022 We’re hiring! We are accepting applications for the role of Communications Coordinator (volunteer position) Please send a copy of your resume and a cover letter to [email protected] by the 15th of October.

03.01.2022 Pilates isn’t here to simply give us a plump bum and abs... The media, celebrity, fitness and diet cultures have all created a western beauty ideal that perpetuates being skinny as the only attractive, or even healthy body type. Pilates is frequently used to play off people’s body insecurities created by these ideals, with advertising featuring phrases such as muffin top eliminators, fat blasting, and body toning. Every single person is a different size, and the ra...nge of body compositions that are medically considered healthy is quite large. In saying this, there are situations where one might want to change their body composition, wether that be for health or aesthetic reasons. However, when we exercise only to change how we look, we are being motivated from the outside in and less likely to adhere to new regimes and feel good about ourselves. If we instead look for other reasons to exercise such as the mental health benefits, being able to play with the kids for longer, or having less pain, we are much more likely to keep to our exercise plans and feel awesome. Now, of course Pilates can be used to help you lose weight and improve muscle tone, especially when sessions are delivered using modern exercise science, and clients take part in additional dietary and activity changes. However, this is simply one element of the method. Pilates is an amazing exercise modality that can make you feel wonderful, and also provide a variety of physical benefits from reduced pain, to athletic conditioning and injury rehabilitation. Try and find these more intrinsic elements the method gives you and you will appreciate it a whole lot more. If you are at all concerned about your body composition or the perceptions you have about your body, we encourage you to see a relevant health professional such as a dietician, psychologist, exercise physiologist or GP.
