19.01.2022 taxnotes - Budget for 2019-20 Wrap-up The legislated Personal Income Tax Plan will be changed to the low and middle-income tax offset (LMITO), the low-in...come tax offset (LITO) and individual income tax rates and thresholds The instant asset write-off threshold for businesses will be increased to $30,000* for eligible assets that are first used, or installed ready for use, from 7.30pm (AEDT) on 2 April 2019 to 30 June 2020. The instant asset write-off threshold also applied to businesses with an aggregated turnover of $10 million or more but less than $50 million The start date of amendments to Div 7A will be implemented on 1 July 2020 instead of 1 July 2019 Members of regulated superannuation funds will not have to meet the work test after 1 July 2020 if they are 65 or 66 years of age. The restrictions on claiming the spouse contribution tax offset will be eased from 1 July 2020, giving 70 to 74-year old spouses eligibility. For vehicles acquired on or after 1 July 2019, eligible primary producers and tourism operators will be able to apply for a refund of any luxury car tax paid, up to a maximum of $10,000. *now it becomes $150,000 due to Covid 19.

08.01.2022 taxnotes - ATO HOTSPOTS on individuals tax return for 2017/2018 ATO is looking at two main areas; work-related expenses (2016/2017) and claims made by inves...tment property owners. 1) work-related clothing, dry cleaning and laundry expenses 2) home office running expense 3) overtime meal expense 4) union fees and subscriptions 5) mobile phone and internet costs 6) motor vehicle 7) incorrectly claiming deductions under the rule that allows taxpayers who have incurred work related expenses of $300 or less in total to make a claim without receipts ATO is also targeting on sharing economic to ensure that income and expenses are correctly reported: 1) ride-sourcing (Uber) 2) renting out a room or house for accommodation (Airbnb) 3) renting out parking spaces 4) providing skilled services trade services (Airtasker) 5) renting out equipment such as tools, musical instruments, sports equipment etc. 6) completing odd jobs, errands, deliveries etc On investment property: 1) pay attention to excessive interest expense claims, such as where property owners have tried to claim borrowing costs on the family home as well as their rental property. 2) incorrect apportionment of rental income and expenses between owners, such as where deductions on a jointly owned property are claimed by the owner with the higher taxable income, rather than jointly. 3) Claiming deductions for a rental property before it is actually rented or available for rent. 4) Incorrectly claiming deductions for legal expenses, such as legal costs associated with buying and selling a property, resisting land resumption and defending title to a property. 5) holiday homes that are not genuinely available for rent. 6) keep a close eye on incorrect claims for newly purchased rental properties. The costs to repair damage and defects existing at the time of purchase or the costs of renovation cannot be claimed immediately.
