08.01.2022 This morning I had the absolute please teaching our Create Your Own Edible Food Garden Workshop to an awesome and enthusiastic group of people. We spoke about ...plant selection which is such an extensive topic. Selecting multi purpose edible plants along with creating your own soil nourishing and organic fertilisers. Another topic of discussion was safe and natural bug control and how to be savvy with planting fruit trees and veges in a way to prevent bugs discovering and munching through your patch. Setting yourself up for success and abundance. We touched on the subject of becoming more solar passive and how to plant out in a way to help heating/cooling within the home and the environment. We also spoke of creating and nurturing eco systems. Phew! A jam packed 2 hours of sharing ideas, information and beagle love!! Be Well. Be Nourished. Be Loved.

07.01.2022 **Hatchling Dugites are on the move** Ok so it’s time to get some awareness out there for everyone as we are now in the hatchling Dugite period and we have relo...cated quite a few of late. I know a lot of these little guys get hurt as do family pets when the snake in question defends itself so the more educated we are the better chance our little snake mates, our pets and us humans have. *NOTE THIS IS FOR JUVENILES 30cm OR UNDER, NOT LARGER SNAKES* First of all do not in anyway attempt to pick up a hatchling Dugite up by bare hand or let alone any snake you see in your yard for that matter, juvenile Dugites are born with a highly toxic venom and are definitely capable of delivering a harmful and possibly fatal bite, even though they are not as dangerous as adults due to smaller fangs and smaller venom glands at this size they still are capable of biting and delivering a highly toxic venom. (ALWAYS EDUCATE CHILDREN REPEATEDLY NOT TO PICK UP SNAKES)! A Dugite clutch size ranges from 11-35 eggs and they hatch between February and April, all scattering from the hatch site, a common question we get is (where is the mum?) well the mother is non maternal and once she lays the eggs she leaves them to self incubate for around 65 days! Well and truly long gone now so don’t worry about her. What to do when you see one?? Well my advice would be for every home to be prepared with a little kit to have yourself covered. As the fangs are only tiny as I previously mentioned, all you need is a PAIR OF GLOVES (preferably the long welders type with the thick material) A TALL BUCKET OR TUB, A TOWEL, LONG PANTS & CLOSED SHOES) With these items mentioned you have a couple of options to choose from. The first choice should be to either keep eyes on the snake and call us or another catcher or simply place a bucket/tub on top of the juvenile snake containing it and then make the call which makes the removal a lot easier, a wet towel is also a great way to contain them, just throw it or place it on top of the snake stopping it in its tracks and keeping it cool. Secondly If confident you could place the bucket on its side and encourage it in with the long tongs or pick it up with the tongs (don’t forget gloves) and place in the bucket with something placed on top to contain and calm the snake. If confident just take it to a bush reserve or forrest near the area but not at a park or somewhere close to other homes, if not just make the call, we will relocate it, no worries. We absolutely love relocating and helping every snake we can so please do not hesitate to call us if you come across one. These little snakes appear aggressive but it’s simply just pure fear as I’m sure you could imagine what it would be like being the size of a noodle with predators like birds, dogs, cats and other animals around?? In regards to dogs and cats the small fangs would unlikely get through the skin or fur on most animals but it’s usually in the mouth, nose and under paw region where the fangs do get through and cause grief. In this period (February-April) I would especially take extra note to pet behaviour, what are they barking at??? What are they playing with??? What have they brought inside??? Thinking ahead and being pro active could be the difference in keeping pets and and the snake out of harms way. Lastly of all please do me a huge favour and check your pools frequently in this period as I would love to save some from drowning to. Snake lives matter and are a huge and important part of our eco system! Hope this helps all of us #teamwildlifeML #snakesrule
