19.01.2022 Did you know Lance Corporal Michael John Daley, MM, was killed in action near Proyart France on 12 August 1918? At the time of his death Daley was the runner for his Company Commander, Captain Thomas Jack, C Company, 42nd Bn AIF. Under orders, Captain Jack had pushed his company forward to occupy positions as part of a line north from Proyart north to the Somme River. The action was carried out in daylight and without artillery support, thereby increasing the difficulty for ...the assaulting troops. C Company, 42nd Battalion reached their objectives, but at the objective came under heavy enemy fire. Lance Corporal Daley was seeking cover in a shell-hole with the company commander, Captain Jack. Whilst they were seeking cover, the enemy could fire into their position and a burst of machine-gun fire struck them. Although wounded, Daley called for a stretcher bearer for Captain Jack, but the stretcher bearers were unable to reach their position due to the heavy fire from the German defenders. During this time, Daley sustained further machine-gun fire and died. Captain Jack apparently died some time later from his wounds. Michael Daley has no known grave and is remembered at the Australian National Memorial at Villers Bretonneux. At the time of his death, Daley was 40 years old. He listed his next of kin as his sister, so it appears that he had no family of his own. Prior to enlisting Daley was a draper in Rockhampton and had attended the Christian Brothers College in West St, Rockhampton. Michael Daley won the Military Medal for bravery with the 42nd Battalion at the Battle of Hamel on 4 July 1918. Image from www.vawm.com.au

16.01.2022 Did you know... Lance Corporal John Alexander Macmillan, 42nd Battalion, was born in Rockhampton, Queensland? After completing school, he studied to be a teacher, but as soon as he turned 18 he enlisted in the AIF in 1916. He left Australia the next year and on arrival in France transferred to the 42nd Battalion. Macmillan survived the 42nd Battalions successful attack on Broodseinde Ridge in Belgium. However, the next time the battalion went into action, just a week later,... he was not so lucky. While holding part of a trench with his mate Private Clarence Tillage he came under fire. A piece of artillery shell caught Macmillan in the head, and he fell to the floor of the trench. His friend,Tillage, sought assistance but, although they managed to get Macmillan bandaged up and ready for stretcher-bearers, he died within half an hour of being hit. John Macmillan had been a popular young man in his unit and many thought very highly of him. He was buried on the battlefield and a brief service was read for him by an officer. However, in the confusion and danger of the fighting his final resting place was lost, and despite an intensive search for unregistered graves Macmillan is now one of many of the First World War dead with no known grave. His good friend Lance Corporal Briggs wrote to his parents, saying: one thing is certain had he lived to old age and made the greatest possible success of any profession and attained the highest honour that are to be bestowed on any man, his death could not have been nobler or his sacrifice more highly given. He died in the most just of causes and gave his life that posterity might have the freedom so dearly being bought today. He is remembered on the panels of the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing in Ypres, Belgium. (AWM) See more

13.01.2022 Did you know Ewing George Thomson, was born on 10 June 1888, in Newcastle, NSW, but at the time of enlistment, gave his home address as the Leichardt Hotel in Rockhampton, Queensland? He had graduated from Sydney University in 1910 as a medical practitioner. Thomson moved to Rockhampton with his medical profession and served as a medical officer with the rank of captain in the 3 rd Port Curtis Infantry, part of the citizens forces. He enlisted in the AIF for service in the W...ar on 1 May 1916 and departed Australia from Melbourne on 23 December in the same year, disembarking at Plymouth on 17th February 1917. Captain Thomson went to the Western Front in May 1917, originally to the 2nd Australian General Hospital, then to the 3rd Division, then 10 Field Ambulance and finally detached for duty to the 42nd Battalion, as the Regimental Medical Officer. All of these moves put him closer to the front and increased hardship and danger. Captain Thomson was recognised for conspicuous good service for caring for the wounded in the open east of Messines on 31 July 1917 showing a disregard for his own safety and carefully attending to some 200 casualties. Whilst attached to the 42nd Battalion on 24 April 1918 near Heilly, he again attended the wounded under dangerous conditions and while at the same time, himself suffering the effects of enemy gas. He was awarded the Military Cross for bravery and devotion to duty. Image from NSW State Archives www.records.nsw.gov.au See more

12.01.2022 Did you know Charles Davidson served as an officer in the 42nd Battalion in both the First and Second World Wars? He was wounded in action in 1918 and returned to Australia. He served in the militia in the inter-war period and was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in 1942 and commanded the Battalion on its operations against the Japanese in New Guinea. 10.01.2022 Did you know...? the 42nd Battalion Memorial Pool is named to honour the men who served in the 42nd Battalion during the Second World War? There have in fact been two 42nd Battalions in two different wars. The 42nd Infantry Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, was raised in Brisbane in 1915 and served in Belgium and France during the First World War. Most of the soldiers came from Queensland and Northern NSW. The 42nd Australian Infantry Battalion was a Citizens Military Forces unit based in Central Queensland and served during the Second World War in New Guinea and Bougainville. This unit became part of the Army Reserve until it was amalgamated with the Townsville-based 31st Battalion in 2007 to become 31/42 RQR. IMG: Australian War Memorial

04.01.2022 Did you know the 42nd Battalion was in camp at Yeppoon when Japan attacked Pearl Harbour on 7 December 1941? The news brought a sudden change of routine and training for war took on a more serious note. Anti-aircraft guns were installed on Wreck Point and an observation group was established on North Keppel Island. In March 1942 the Battalion moved to Tiaro as the training to the war in New Guinea intensified. The Battalion then moved north to Townsville and took up defensi...ve positions around Townsville whilst the Battle of the Coral Sea took place 750km from the coast. The soldiers experienced their first taste of warfare there when Japanese planes bombed Townsville. It was also in Townsville where the soldiers first encountered the American soldiers, or Yanks as they were called. Relations were not always friendly especially around the local pubs and dance halls. See more
