05.01.2022 CHAPPY CHATTER Over the past week, I have been focusing on being positive and how this can change my perception of situations and my ability to cope with them. Research has proven that for every negative thought we need to replace it with five positive ones to counteract the negativity. That seems a lot, but as humans we sometimes have the innate propensity to look at the negative, especially when we are under stress. Research also states that when positivity is generated,... the stress hormone cortisol decreases and the brain produces the feel good hormone serotonin, leading to a greater sense of wellbeing. Building positivity is actually a practice and it’s definitely something I need to do more of. I was sitting in traffic the other morning on the way to the gym and feeling frustrated and anxious that I would not make my class on time. By the time I got to the gym it took a while for me to settle myself into the present moment and lose the feelings of frustration. Conversely, I was stuck in the same amount of traffic on my way to work this morning in the same place! I decided to use the time I was stuck in traffic to focus on some positive things about my life. I stopped and took a breath instead of feeling frustrated about circumstances I could not control. The difference in my mental state was obvious. So what can we do to maintain positivity? Focus on what is good in your life we have so much to be thankful for; Show kindness and compassion to others; Surround yourself with positive people; Act positive; Smile and laugh often; Do something nice for someone else. What can you do to be more positive this week? Until next time. See more
