25.01.2022 The sump on the new motor needs to be changed because the front diff will make short work of it on the first trip off road. So the old donor motor again comes to the rescue. Shallow at the back and deep add on pan at the front. Cleaned it all up and filled it with water to see what its capacity topped out at. 12 litres sitting level plus a litre for filter and another 2 for oil cooler. The current petto motor tops out at 10 litres. Next step is temporary set up in spare truck frame to set up compressor pipes into existing lines and make sure fan spins inside existing cowling. Get all that right and down time to do the swap should be minimal

23.01.2022 A call from police at 1.30 am got me up and heading for wonnerup to pull a tidy 80 series out of the creek. It got stuck at high tide and a bit of water went thru it. By the time i arrived tide had dropped (no deflate required ) and i didnt get soaking wet hooking her up with chain around the xrox bar. I bogged the back end to anchor the truck and with 50 metres of cable out, gently eased it out of the creek and towed it to the carpark

23.01.2022 So now I can get back to real spanner work. Fitting new oil pump ,water-pump (3rd in 25 years) and installing a recon oil cooler ready for call outs when you least expect it. Also photos of a couple of variants of these Australian built beasties that surprised the honchos during testing how well they performed off road

22.01.2022 A collapsed bearing in the power divider on the middle axle took a bit of time and effort this week. I put 4 new bearings and a uni joint in but the real time goes into setting the preload on the bearings. These four bearings take the drive load for both rear diffs so even the gasket thickness plays a part in tolerances. All set now to get onto fitting the dot 4 purculator diesel engine which should halve fuel costs

20.01.2022 As usual when planning a dash to Perth the phone rings with an enquiry about vehicle recovery. In this case RAC had a client with a rolled 100 series, back on its wheels but a non goer. I headed for Hamelin Bay at 3pm on what was a beautiful day for the beach. Deflated and drove the 3-4 k around the bay to the entry/exit to Bobs track and hooked it up. Dropped pressures a bit more for the return run and with Bob the tilt driver steering we rounded the bay back to the carpark. I got out of the way and started reinflating, Bob is pictured doing the tilt thing. Dash cam and gopro footage to come

18.01.2022 Years ago I bought an old Inter horse transporter that had a Perkins motor and the necessary adapter plate to hold gearshift assembly in the cab over models. Finding a compressor to fit the low mount drive however has been a problem. Fast forward to December last year and a Perkins that had been sitting for awhile came into my life and it had the high mount compressor factory fitted. Was it any good?? One way to find out!! Took it home and set it up on blocks with and old tra...iler A Frame set up with a chain block to stop it flipping over. Took both manifolds off and shoved the vacuum cleaner into them and took out the injectors and squirted a heap of oil down each one and turned it over using that old starter motor. Put it all back together and with a new starter motor it fired up with good oil pressure and not a lot of smoke. Pretty effing happy with that See more

17.01.2022 This job had been pending for a couple of months. I removed a wall from the back of a cafe and winched this 800kg oven out and chocked it waiting for a new owner. Delivery day arrived and after propping the frame to the truck deck and multiple tie downs to hold the top heavy thing on we headed to Doc Williams old surgery in Augusta

13.01.2022 Fine day for a Hamelin Bay recovery. A rolled 105 Landcruiser in need of the big guns! #4wdrescue #beachrecovery #gopro #international

12.01.2022 So a bent steering link can be straightened but it wont last long. We got a kilometre along the track when it gave out altogether. So do we take it off and race home in the ute to weld it or race home and get the truck to cart it home and not risk a dodgy repair on track or on highway.

12.01.2022 We are set up for extreme recoveries but these ones come along. Brand new car set up for mines but no gear on board to self help out of trouble. A few people pushing would of done the job but we took the truck on a beach run to test the new oil pump

12.01.2022 Flex Friday’s! #4wdrescue #4wdaction #independentaxials #flex #6wheeldrive #internationalarmytruck

10.01.2022 When you’ve got a three axle recovery beast you may as well let people know. New signage, new paint job (partially finished) new engine and new overdrive syncro box. With twin compressors and 20 cuft a minute and 3 air receivers to hold it. Combine that with the mid mount winch that works front or back and actually has roller fairleads to keep cable on drum. All that on a supremely capable Australian made platform

09.01.2022 Working flat out at the moment to get thru my building commitments so I can free up some time to do the much anticipated engine swap. Just got started on welding some shed door posts when a call came through for a couple stuck out at east Capel. Turned out to be a simple tow out but they told me that several cars had driven straight past without so much as a R U OK. Anyway all good and they were mobile before that weather on Saturday really settled in

07.01.2022 Lest we forget. Lets also spare a thought for the poor young blokes who drove these things in the tropics.

06.01.2022 Parts arrived from Sydney to rebuild the Clayton Dewandre compressor on Friday so that was my Saturday sorted. It turned out the bracket I ordered was also ready to go which meant I could start mounting the Endless air compressor as well. About 8pm got a call to mobilise to Preston Beach to help a woman on her own bogged on the waterline. As Im heading out the gate thinking this will be an all nighter the Police rang again to say someone had got her out of trouble. Compressor... Saturday is back on. So new valves and springs on top of a new barrel , piston and rings and tiny little big end shells and its ready to be plumbed into the engine. Onto the other compressor now setting it up to slide on a flat plate to tighten the second fan belt. Gonna fit the whole shebang into the spare truck chassis soon so all the bits and pieces can be sorted so its just a matter of removing the petrol engine and installing the new diesel with airlines, fuel delivery and airfilter already tried and tested See more

05.01.2022 With self isolating the name of the game we spent all of April demolishing a solid B & T house in Perth. Living on site in a partially burnt out carport with a dome swag and joolca portable shower we managed to fit all the rubble and timber into 10 big skips without damaging the unit next door. Also salvaged some nice Oregon beams for a workshop extension back at home. Now thats done we can concentrate on the long awaited engine swap from a 4.6 litre petrol to a 5.8 litre diesel with 2 air compressors and better economy

05.01.2022 Having spent the past month searching the globe for a compressor rebuild kit to refurbish the twin cylinder I turned my attention to a single cylinder that fits and parts are readily available. As well as this water cooled unit on left side of engine there will also be an endless air 10 cu ft compressor belt driven on RH side. Both units will have separate air tanks including greater capacity for truck brakes. All this so re-inflating the 1200r20 tyres doesn’t take over an hour after a beach tow/ recovery and usually after midnight. Also continued to disassemble my spare 6x6 for parts including a front shaft and drive flange and new double seals which went straight into service. Absolutely no slop on the slip spline which is about a $400 repair last time I checked

05.01.2022 Got a call for this little job at the Wilyabrup sand pit. Just bottomed out in the hot sand. Pulled them out, pumped their tyres up and i headed home to continue work on the Perkins Project.

03.01.2022 Started the week remounting the mirrors onto the door hinge to shed about 300 mm of width by removing the aluminium struts that tranferred every bush strike to the door skin. Moved onto fitting spare gearbox to engine and then swinging the whole lot into the truck frame sitting on the ground. Now we can develop the new air lines to the old air tank and the new air tanks. Top and bottom radiator hoses wont be off the shelf either. So we are fabbing out of 51mm stainless to do it once properly while we have the walk around access of the test bed. Once the radiator frame went in it was pleasing to see the fan cowl didnt need any adjustment for fan clearance. We’ve got a few other things happening as well to be revealed as soon as we do a test drive with the new engine

01.01.2022 Singaporean tourists offroading in the Kia Carnival. Ive pulled tourists driving Camrys and Hondas out of the sandpit that is the track to Wilyabrup. This day was filthy weather and it was dark before they got back to Caves Rd and headed for Margaret River
