23.01.2022 We know how to #EndHomelessness in Brisbane. From our experience through 500 Lives 500 Homes, and the evidence and experiences from communities around the world, we developed Housing First: A roadmap to ending homelessness in Brisbane. The Roadmap provides a practical action plan for government and non-government agencies, businesses and individual citizens to permanently end homelessness. 23.01.2022 Looking forward to ending homelessness in Brisbane with dignity and housing solutions that last, when we work together. w/ Mick de Brenni for Springwood Housing and Public Works Qld Govt Annastacia Palaszczuk MP

22.01.2022 Experiencing homelessness can cause a consistent deterioration in physical and mental health. Housing + health support allows tenants to arrest this decline and make steps toward recovery and life satisfaction. This increases tenants ability to maintain a tenancy.... 22.01.2022 It is difficult to build resilience without meaningful activity and a connection to a community of choice, whether that be a club, a neighbourhood, friends, family or a workplace. The bad news: 55% of adults surveyed by 500 Lives 500 Homes felt they had no meaningful daily activity.... The good news: 71% of tenants surveyed at Brisbane Common Ground Supportive Housing socialised with other tenants at least once a week.

22.01.2022 On Thursday, an alliance of 54 groups including welfare agencies, church leaders and legal experts submitted an alternative 14-point plan for Melbourne to ease its homelessness issue without making the problem into an offence.

21.01.2022 Finland bucks the trend of rising homelessness in the EU by providing permanent affordable housing. "In Finland, long term programmes for reducing homelessness over the past 20 years have proven their value, by focusing on the provision of permanent, affordable housing, and providing specialised support for the most vulnerable people such as the #HousingFirst scheme, which gives homeless people stable accommodation to #EndHomelessness rather than just managing it." https://www.theguardian.com//homelessness-housing-problems

19.01.2022 To put #HousingFirst with support into practice, Queensland needs an increased supply of affordable and social housing stock. This weeks announcement of $1.8b dollars to this much-needed area is a promising sign of Queenslands commitment to the wellbeing of all its citizens. Exciting times ahead.

18.01.2022 The end of the 500 Lives 500 Homes campaign is not the end of homelessness. We continue to advocate for #housingfirst with support until there is an end to homelessness in Brisbane. 15.01.2022 The shocking aspect of this new face of poverty is that most of the women involved have not experienced long-term serious illness and have worked most of their lives, often in good, middle level jobs, Ageing and Womens advocate Susan Ryan.

14.01.2022 We have often discussed housing + support at Brisbane Common Ground and its positive impacts for individuals, families and the community. Sadly, a similar (and similarly successful) program is ending in Tasmania to be replaced with a previous (and less successful) model. #theEvidenceIsIn #endHomelessness #nurtureEquality

13.01.2022 Jackie Trad MP, Member for South Brisbane congratulating 500 Lives 500 Homes campaign partners on the success of the 3 year campaign.

12.01.2022 Today, the 10 October 2017, is both World Mental Health Day and World Homeless Day. What a powerful statement on the close and reciprocal relationship between the two issues.

11.01.2022 "A 2011 study of homeless people in Melbourne found that 15 per cent of the sample had a mental illness before becoming homeless. Another 16 per cent developed a mental health condition *after* becoming homeless." The myth that most people are homeless because of mental illness masks the fact that mental health issues are often *caused* by prolonged homelessness. This underlines the importance of knowing those experiencing homelessness by name, learning their specific needs,... and providing permanent and secure housing as soon as possible. http://www.sbs.com.au//surprising-link-between-mental-illn

10.01.2022 Congratulations to 500 Lives 500 Homes partner Brisbane Youth Service for providing 40 years of support for vulnerable young people in Brisbane. Together we can #endhomelessness https://www.facebook.com//a.20883403249/1514121225296314/

09.01.2022 "We need to ask whether what we are doing is servicing homelessness rather than ending it. We can do that by working more closely together, but we also need to all get behind some big ideas that will help end homelessness." #housingfirst http://www.theherald.com.au//ideas-sought-on-ending-not-s/

09.01.2022 If you dont have a proper home, how can you get a proper education? - Jenny Smith, CEO of the Council to Homeless Persons "The number of Australian school children seeking help from homelessness services has increased by more than 80 per cent over the past three years." https://probonoaustralia.com.au//almost-40000-school-chil/

08.01.2022 ...And that wraps up another year of Homeless Connect events, with housing, healthcare and support services joining together in a day of community support for people experiencing homelessness. 07.01.2022 "Weve always known that womens homelessness is probably greater than weve been seeing in the statistics because womens homelessness can be so hidden, sleeping in the backs of cars, staying with friends, CEO of the Council to Homeless Persons Jenny Smith.

07.01.2022 Fundamental needs, such as a need for housing, should not be tied with categories and identities that assume who someone is and what they are perceived to lack. That is why we do not work with the homeless. Rather, we know people by name, we know their specific needs, and we work with them to access the stability and support they require.... https://theconversation.com/whats-in-the-name-homeless-how-

07.01.2022 Policy-makers and bean-counters at all levels of government need to examine what poor housing and homelessness are costing their budgets, taking a wide view to cover health, welfare and social justice costs, and adding a large measure of compassion and forward vision. 06.01.2022 While we continue to work to find secure and permanent housing for those experiencing homelessness here in Brisbane, it seems to be a bumper time for homelessness innovation in the UK! After highlighting the proactive attitude of two UK mayors last week, we now learn that a government-funded study into #housingfirst in Liverpool has found the scheme could save up to 4m compared to current homelessness services in the Liverpool City Region. A game-changer indeed! #endhomel...essness https://www.bigissue.com//new-housing-first-strategy-game/

06.01.2022 Its distressing to live in a city of such affluence and see such poverty we need to do something about it, Compass Group Managing Director Greg Budworth at an Ending Homelessness workshop.

04.01.2022 Its National Homelessness Week. Every night over 105,000 Australians dont have a place to call home. Can you join the call for 100,000 new social housing properties over the next five years? Please consider signing Christine Thirkells petition. #HW2017

04.01.2022 "the budget contains a number punitive welfare reform measures that are likely to contribute to homelessness. Targeting illicit drug users and reducing and/or cancelling their payments is likely to have an impact on homelessness services, as well as the justice and social housing systems. Indeed, any potential cost savings will likely be offset by new costs to the justice, health, homelessness and social housing sectors." See the evidence... 02.01.2022 "We need better community housing policies, we need significant government funding solutions to fill this big gap between those who can afford to rent and those people who are becoming more and more vulnerable, Associate Professor of Social Work Dr Philip Crane, University of the Sunshine Coast. #EndHomelessness

02.01.2022 Thanks to the Don Dunstan Foundation and our good friends at Community Solutions, Adelaide is taking action with The Zero Project. The project starts with knowing the names of all the people sleeping rough on any given night and reporting publicly on the overall number of people sleeping rough in as close to real time as possible. It is not absolute zero but a sustainable zero It is something that you can continue to achieve - David Pearson, Executive Director Don ...Dunstan Foundation. Good luck! 01.01.2022 Two UK mayors making homelessness a priority. "Heres hoping the action planned by Mayors Khan [London] and Burnham [Manchester] will prove decisive in tackling not just street homelessness but the causes of street homelessness in the months and years to come." https://www.bigissue.com//sadiq-khan-determination-end-st/

01.01.2022 Big thanks to Street Funders (part of StreetSmart Australia) for their generous donation to the 500 Lives Families Working Group. This money can be used for families supported across different services to assist with moving costs and household set-ups. Through the 500 Lives Families Working Group, a mother and her two children were recently housed in a Department of Housing property. Thanks to the Street Funders donation, we were able to purchase a fridge, washing machine and some second-hand beds (see Matt and our favourite mover, Gary picking them up). This is invaluable for a family setting up a new home, and a cost that many families cant afford on top of paying for the rent at their new property.

01.01.2022 Micah Projects welcomes the Federal Government budget that announced the continuation of funding to homelessness services through a new National Housing and Hom...elessness Agreement. There is still much work ahead to address the housing supply issues facing people who are currently homeless and we are encouraged to note that the Government is keen to work closely with not-for-profit organisations to tackle the issue. Homelessness is the result of a complex set of circumstances. However, we need robust policy levers that set good social policy agendas so that people are not denied access to housing and the support they need to sustain that housing and have a quality of life. Micah Projects would also advocate that we need contemporary lenses such as a Housing First approach and using innovative collaborative strategies. The forum on Friday celebrating the work of the 500 Lives 500 Homes campaign is one demonstration of how the community can work together to address homelessness and demonstrate measurable outcomes. #federalbudget #budget2017 #housingfirst Review the findings and outcomes of the 500 Lives 500 Homes Campaign here - http://micahprojects.org.au/resources/fact-sheets
