02.01.2022 Launched by the Play it Safe by the Water Committee as part of Water Safety Week, Life Saving Victoria has released the 2019/20 Victorian Drowning Report at the... official launch event with Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp APM. There were 34 drowning deaths in 2019/20 and while this is a 23% reduction in the drowning rate compared to the 10-year average, these figures need to be understood in the context of a season impacted by poor air quality, bushfires and the onset of the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This is reflected in the 40% reduction in drowning deaths between January to June 2020 compared to the 10-year average. All Victorians are urged to be extra vigilant around water this summer to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. Remember to always swim with a friend between the red and yellow flags at a patrolled beach and be prepared before a day out on or around the water by checking conditions and forecasts.
