25.01.2022 Have seen many patients with low vitamin D as a result of the pandemic. Its a concern as vitamin D is not just important for your bones, but also important for your energy, mood, immunity, and other body functions. Fear not venture outdoors in a sunny day for about half an hour or so, so long as you practice physical distancing from others. #ClayfieldGP#Clayfielddoctor#BrisbaneGP#Ascot#Hamilton#Albion#Wooloowin#Windsor#Hendra

23.01.2022 Warning about TRAMADOL... Tramadol is commonly prescribed by specialists and GPs for pain from osteoarthritis and other causes. While it is an effective pain relief, the public needs to be aware that this drug may increase all cause mortality and risk of hip fractures. Eg. higher risk of cardiovascular diseases and venous thromboembolism (life-threatening clots). Please speak to your doctor about alternative, safer, pain relief.

23.01.2022 For those of you who want to sew your own masks, the most effective DIY facemask involves a combination of different fabrics, or a bit of quilt that already has a set of layers, a new study suggests. After testing various fabrics ability to block tiny particles, the US researchers concluded that a homemade mask made from a tightly woven cotton layer, combined with a layer of chiffon and/or batting material, could fend off virus particles best. For the ultimate mask, a layer ...of cotton was combined with two layers of polyester spandex chiffon, which creates static electricity. The researchers found one layer of tightly woven cotton combined with two layers of polyester-spandex chiffon were 80%-99% effective, depending on the particle size. However, even if the mask material was highly effective at blocking virus particles, it was no good if the fit wasnt optimal. The experiments found that gaps could result in a greater than 60% decrease in the filtration efficiency, "implying the need for future cloth mask design studies to take into account issues of fit and leakage, while allowing the exhaled air to vent efficiently," the authors noted.

23.01.2022 Fainting is quite common and, if it happens, can be quite alarming to have someone collapse without warning. Fainting is a sudden loss of consciousness caused by a low blood flow to the brain. Things like emotional shock, low blood pressure, exhaustion, over exertion, dehydration, standing immobile in hot conditions, or standing up suddenly could cause someone to faint. Symptoms can include:... lose consciousness light-headed, dizziness cold skin and sweating slurred speech feeling sick / nauseous changes to your vision It usually happens suddenly and people recover quickly, often within seconds, without lasting effects. It may be a temporary occurrence or the indicator of a larger problem. But if it is recurrent, it is important to see a doctor. What to do - First Aid for Fainting If you happen to be present when someone faints, here are the First Aid actions to perform to help Follow DRSABCD Danger, Response, Send For Help, Airways, Breathing, CPR, Defibrillator. Help the person lie down. A person who has fainted in a chair should be helped to the ground. Loosen any tight clothing that could be restricting breathing. If the person is unconscious, roll them on their side. Check they are breathing and that they have a pulse. Ensure there is plenty of fresh-air open a window if possible If possible, elevate the persons feet above the height of their head. When the person becomes conscious, lie them on their back and raise and support their legs. Assess the person for any potential injuries if they have fallen. Call triple zero (000) for an ambulance if the person has not regained consciousness within a few seconds or recovered in a few minutes. What you shouldnt do Get the casualty to sit down with their head between their legs Splash the face with water It is a myth that these techniques are effective at preventing fainting or helping someone manage faintness. Preventing FaintingSome things you can do if you feel faint: loosen any tight clothing stay hydrated with plenty of water control your breathing stay away from triggers/phobias stand up slowly from lying or seatin If you want to see more First Aid Tips, be sure to visit us at https://www.fluidfirstaid.com.au/blog/ and dont forget to book your First Aid Course, at https://www.fluidfirstaid.com.au/courses/ so you can be prepared to save someones life.

22.01.2022 Vitamin D Vs COVID-19 There is now a growing body of research pointing to the potential role of vitamin D levels and worsening outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The vitamin D receptor is expressed on immune cells (B cells, T cells and antigen presenting cells) and can therefore act in an autocrine manner in a local immunologic milieu. Deficiency is associated with increased autoimmunity, as well as an increased susceptibility to infection.... A short report published in Aging Clinical and Experimental Research on 6 May identified levels of vitamin D for 20 European countries. The cross-sectional analysis researchers found very significant correlation between the mean vitamin D levels and the number of cases and deaths of COVID-19 per million. We believe that we can advise vitamin D supplementation to protect against SARS-CoV-2 infection, the researchers stated. Another paper, published in Nutrients on 2 April, outlines several mechanisms by which vitamin D may reduce the risk of developing infection. Those mechanisms include inducing cathelicidins and defensins that can lower viral replication rates, and reducing concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines that produce the inflammation that injures the lining of the lungs, leading to pneumonia, as well as increasing concentrations of anti-inflammatory cytokines, the authors wrote. That paper pointed to other observational evidence to support the role of vitamin D levels and their effect on COVID-19. It states that evidence supporting the role of vitamin D in reducing risk of COVID-19 includes the fact that: the outbreak occurred in winter, a time when vitamin D concentrations are lowest the number of cases in the southern hemisphere near the end of summer is low vitamin D deficiency has been found to contribute to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) case-fatality rates increase with age and with chronic disease comorbidity, both of which are associated with lower concentration of the vitamin. The authors therefore recommend people at risk of COVID-19 consider raising 25(OH)D (calcidiol) concentrations above 4060 ng/mL (100150 nmol/L) to reduce the risk of infection. For treatment of people who become infected with COVID-19, they believe higher doses of vitamin D might be useful. Whereas there are currently no results from randomised controlled trials to conclusively prove that vitamin D beneficially affects COVID-19 outcomes, there is strong circumstantial evidence of associations between vitamin D and the severity of COVID-19 responses, including death, Professor Rose Anne Kenny said. The French are currently recruiting for a randomised controlled trial the CoVit Trial. This is a multicentre, randomised controlled trial of high dose versus standard dose vitamin D3 in high-risk COVID-19 patients. Its estimated completion date is July 2020.

22.01.2022 There is NO GUARANTEE that once you caught COVID-19, you will be immune to it indefinitely! WHO said it expected that most people would develop some kind of antibody response and immune protection, but the level of protection or how long it would last was not yet known. "What we dont yet know is the level of protection or how long it will last.... "We are working with scientists around the world to better understand the bodys response to #COVID19 infection," the WHO wrote. The organisation released a scientific brief last week rejecting the idea of immunity passports, as there wasnt enough evidence about the level of protection from one infection.

17.01.2022 Wonder how long a Coronavirus patient should stay isolated for after they feel better? Studies have shown that viral shedding (=virus still may jump from the case to others) may keep happening a few days to even 2 weeks after symptoms disappear. The more severe the case, the longer the period of viral shedding. A specialist at Princess Alexandra Hospital had recommended isolation for another 3 weeks after symptoms disappear, just in case!

09.01.2022 We now require ALL patients visiting our practice to arrive wearing surgical masks Please refer to the current QLD Health recommendation: QLD Health - Pandemic Response Guidance - Personal protective equipment in Healthcare delivery https://www.health.qld.gov.au//PPE-escalation-healthcare-f... The recommendations on escalation of personal protective equipment (PPE) contained in this guidance have been updated and are based on currently available information about COVID-19 and apply to the delivery of healthcare in Queensland. This guidance is to all QLD Health facilities, and includes general practice and primary care, aged care and disability care services, however it is not a QLD Health directive, but is strongly recommended for all health care settings. The escalation of PPE aims to minimise the risk for acquisition of COVID-19 infection by healthcare workers, patients and visitors. The following guidance has been issued for MODERATE-RISK areas. Please note guidance is not a mandatory directive: Universal masking (with flat surgical mask) of all patients, visitors and staff is advised at this time. This advice applies to all Queensland Health facilities and is also recommended for all other healthcare providers (e.g. general practice, private hospitals, community care etc.) in moderate risk areas The guidance for general practices in areas deemed to be of moderate risk is for team members to wear surgical (flat) masks; eye protection if working in close quarters with consumers; and full PPE only when interacting with suspected COVID cases. Local Government areas that are currently considered moderate risk: City of Brisbane City of Ipswich Logan City Scenic Rim Region Somerset Region, Lockyer Valley Region Moreton Bay Region Redlands City All other areas of Queensland remain at LOW-RISK with Bruce Willett.

03.01.2022 Now ANYONE with either Fever, night sweats/cold chills, or cough, or sore throat, or breathlessness, living in Brisbane/Gold Coast/Cairns should make a phone appointment with your doctor to arrange a COVID-19 test. DO NOT just turn up to your doctors clinic. This is the latest guidelines as there is evidence of community transmission - aboiy 34 cases of COVID-19 in Queensland had NO travel history!

03.01.2022 Some people on Facebook asked:Whats the point in having flu vaccine in 2020 with the social distancing practices we have to prevent COVID-19? Should we not get the flu? Well, our answer to that is, if people are indeed social distancing, why do we still have such rising numbers of COVID-19? Are you sure EVERYONE is social distancing acceptably? If you caught the flu, your immune system will be weakened, so if you came in contact with COVID-19 as well, you may be in big...ger trouble. Dont assume just because youre young, you cannot get very sick or die from either flu or COVID-19
